  • size doesn't equal quality, but bigger voices are harder to move. which was my point. also was my point about franco, ettore and jerry singing handle. those were all huge voices and moved very well.

  • as a student of jerrys and also somebody who knows sam i will tell you that jerrys voice was much bigger. and i'm not dissin on sam either. jerrys voice was bigger than mine too. but it's interesting to hear such a big voice as jerrys sing these runs. listen to his recording of samson with corelli, bastiannini from la scala. kind of scary to hear all those big voices singing handel

  • @operacaster The size of a voice is not necessarily the ultimate point on which to judge a singer. That said, I remember well literally jumping in my seat hearing Ramey hit the first note of Olin Blitch's Prayer of Repentance in a live recital.

  • Groß! - Ich denke, man kann es hören: Hines glaubt, was er hier singt!

  • Hines fans should read Great Singers on Singing, Hines' book of interviews with colleagues about singing. Really gives you the measure of the man, I think. Jan Peerce really comes off as a mensch there, but Hines just as much...

  • @dis0guise Yeah I got that book from a library around 2 years ago. Very informative. Some great stories in there, such as the one about Bonaldo Giaotti crying after his teacher told him he was a bass.

  • Bello il paragone fra grandi cantanti e grandi vini ::))

  • I agree. Probably like arguing the difference between a Chateau Lafite Rothschild 96 and a Chateau Margaux 95. Different but both rare and extraordinary. Who you think is better is a matter of taste and preference and not disagreeing over.

  • Magnificent. What an instrument. Has there ever been anyone better? Thank God for these recordings and postings for our enjoyment.

  • @Jamessferrier I think with all due respect that Samuel Ramey's recording of The Trumpet Shall Sound equals Hines's. Ramey's version is also on YouTube.

  • @arpeggio1358 No Way! When Jerry sang Inquisitore to Ramey's Phillip, Sam sounded like Jerry's little boy

  • @OscarLevant1 They have two very different sounds and I happen to like Ramey's voice better...my opinion. And you're entitled to yours.

  • Never heard anything better

  • Uau big voice and majesty too. Fantastic

  • @mechecalomar yes; klemperer on angel records

  • My first Messiah had Hines singing. Majesty, indeed! Wonderful and FANTASTIC.

  • Such a dark, powerful voice...amazing performance.

  • Jerry, we miss you.

  • FANTASTIC. 'Nuff said:).

  • Majesty.
