one of my all time faves ..it took me YEARS to find them..i heard Jeremy and Tokyo a Go Go and the lady i was seeing made me crazy when these songs were on..i only had a tape and one day in 1995 someone went with me to a record shop and said check out this stupid cd (the artwork) i snatched it from him played it in the cd room and would not let go of it until i got home..i managed to call that woman later and she hung up on me..but i STILL have the cd ..hehe..
I've only heard 4 songs from this band so far, and love every single one of them... (all my little words, epitaph for my heart, all you ever do is walk away, and this one) can't wait to see what else they've done...
@irontoad30 I really hope you loved it all. No band has influenced and impacted my life as much as Magnetic Fields. You know how sometimes you smell a perfume that triggers a memory you can't quite recall? Or maybe eat some candy that you vaguely recall from your childhood? That's the Magnetic Fields for me, with love. Me and my very first love, the only thing that reminds me what she was TRULY like is these songs. I miss when these songs didn't make me cry.
this band openned for my then band (Linda Smith group) band in 1990 in Cambridge,Boston and they were spectacular-this song in particular....I had a difficult time following them and played a nervous set of our songs.I shall always appreciate the sound they had.
On his earllier albums, stephin fed the cello, banjo and ukulele parts into a synthesizer that was basically an effect (like a guitar pedal). I think that's why the banjo on this sounds slightly off- on some of his other songs, he has the banjo without electronic distortion. I'm pretty sure this is john woo on banjo, fed through a synth.
The video matches the SOUND of the song, with the banjo plucking away like how a rural town should sound, but not the lyrics. But then, the music and lyrics so often are at odds with the Magnetic Fields, so in a way, it does work.
I don't think it's a banjo,it's a sitar.Listen to Reno Dakota and A Chicken With It's Head Cut Off, they use a banjo which John Woo who is in TMF is probably one of the best banjo players out there,
I just listened to those two songs and the banjo there definitely sounds different than what I hear here, so you could be right. It does kind of sound like a sitar, but it still kind of sounds like a banjo too (maybe played in a different style). I need to check my CD liner notes, but they're in my desk at work. :)

Is there considerable irony in the fact that you could melt any girl's heart with this, but in fact a gay man wrote it?
Merritt is a beautiful man.
kablamman2007 3 years ago 2
not ironic at all. more really goes to show that love is love and it doesn't matter where it comes from or where it goes

you cant melt a heart with these lyrics, its about breaking up with someone

Stephin Merritt has never sucked. Thanks for uploading this video. Magnetic Fields clips are very rare.

"Showtunes" though?? I think the consensus is that "Showtunes" is terrible. I'll say that Merritt RARELY sucks.

I take it back, Tragic Treasury is great. But 69 Love Songs? Maybe 9 of them were good. I still love the man, despite his suckage.
