My friend correct this word "where the isothermal(intake vales open/close, exhaust valves close/open)" to where the isothermal(intake valves open/close, exhaust valves close/open)
@Bobbymitchell10 yeah lol! Good thing I know better now. But this is such a sweet demo though for giving me my first real understanding of a 4-stroke engine.
@jack9102 LOL your obviously way to pro to be watching this video. I loved the demo for visual expressing to me how an engine works. Now I can do timing and stuff, but this demo was what started it all.
@jimmy21150 lol. I was still figuring this stuff out at the time this vid was taken. Can I call you an idiot for not knowing something that I know alot about?
That must be some quite old design, since it's a DOHV (Double Overhead Valve) engine. Even in the early 70's most cars already used an SOHV, SOHC or even a DOHC arangement.
@SlayingBB324 heheh I know, but to be fair this was when my interest in 4-stroke engines was in its infancy, and not only that, the device had an arrow indicating what direction to turn the crank, which was wrong.
but you are right, good sir. I could just rename this "4 stroke water pump" to rectify my error. :D
@sgknexmaker late comment but thank god sumone actually said 4 strokes are smoother running engines than 2 strokes cause everywhere i go i hear people bitching about how 2 strokes are better than 4 strokes and i say there the same only which each engine gives its separate purpose
@haider87 Isnt a 2 stroke engine way more efficient than a 4 stroke engine? The 2 stroke has one power stroke in 360 degrees and a 4 stroke has one power stroke in 720 degrees. Ok a 2 stroke engine uses more fuel but imo it has nothing to do with efficienty.
lol the guy says whats going on here do you have any idea? Just letting you know you were spinning it the wrong way though :P I do that too sometimes Great project! Now I'm all jealous so I'm going to build one too...
@SuperKONR Heheh, thanks. This was back when I was barely starting to learn about engines. Now that I look at this video again, It looks like it's cranked in the proper direction, just the colored labels(yellow, red for intake and exhaust) were off. It's too far back to remember, but I really loved this demo. Thanks, I hope add more videos in the future that fellow motor heads will find interesting.
Did anyone notice that the Otto cycle on the board didn't match the model shown in the video? That is, the one on the board was the idealized 2 stroke (note that the volume only changed twice, not 4 times . . . basically the intake stroke doesn't exist or happens at the exact same time as the power stroke while the exhaust stroke doesn't exist or must happen at the same time as the compression stroke) cycle with magical instantaneous heat addition and rejection.
Ur spining the wrong way

he's spinning it backwards, thats why the timing is so off

thats incorrect

@shockflyyer3d it's just being spun backwards. I was spinnign it in the direction that the arrow was telling me.

spin it the right direction u idiot

@szlatyka some later mercedes engines i used the super long rods and lower cams like in this vid. but its deifnitely out of date.

well If you would spin it in the right direction you might see that is a 4 stroke engine XD.

how would one valve work for a 4 stroke engine
123rcflyer 11 months ago
@123rcflyer there are 2 valves. see the long valve rods?
haider87 10 months ago
I see the valve arrangement is in the "T" configuration
chuckbear1961 11 months ago
When was that made? It looks quite old, as though it were one of the earliest designs for 4-stroke engines over 100 years ago

@FliegenCockatiel Most of the demos in the UCB physics department are antiques

that engine would fire at approx. 100 degrees before top dead center. not very accurate.

is a 4 stroke faster then a 2 stroke engine
v8power200 1 year ago
@v8power200 No, it's heavier than a two stroke which makes it slower. But it runs cooler than a 2 stroke.
sgknexmaker 1 year ago
@sgknexmaker ok thanks
v8power200 1 year ago
@v8power200 and lighter. but 2 strokes are way less efficient, but more FUN

erikatvdriver 8 months ago
@erikatvdriver Yes, they all have their ups and downs. But mainly, 2 strokes will have higher rpm, and 4 will provide more torque.
But if you were talking about efficiency and uses, that's a different story.
2 Strokes are only better in specific uses like, racing bikes, or for speed. But a 4 stroke will pull you out of the mud and grip a lot better.
sgknexmaker 8 months ago
@v8power200 2-strokes are lighter and produce more power/engine weight. They are just ridiculously inefficient.
