how are the marbles going up?

There's a glass spiral in the center , driven by a motor. The marbles are held against the spiral by some vertical rods, and as the spiral turns it pushes the marbles up. It's a type of Archimedes' screw.

Dude, there is no breaking glass sound. That's a child's xylophone I took apart and used the keys in the piece.
