Estas voces y la musica de ese entonces, INCREIBLES, los admiro y a los que queden o quieran imitarlos, les queda un buen reto, pero aun asi, que siga su musica.
This and the Great Pretender, the first two records I owned and they were 78s And still to this day two of my favorites Piano in Great Pretender, none better
This was included in Dennis Potter's 'Lipstick on Your Collar' and that reminded me that I had owned the original 78. Brilliant song and superb performance by the original Platters; but isn't Tony Williams just amazing!
MY FATHER WAS A WWII NAVY GUNNER.HE SHOT DOWN 5 JAP ''ZEROS''.AS A BOY I WOULD BE FORCED TO SUFFER THROUGH THESE SONGS.NOW THAT I'M GROWN AND HE IS IN HEAVEN. I LONG FOR THOSE LONG BEGOTTEN DAYS AS A BOY,MISS U DAD!!
95% of modern pop music is no longer composed by a person with soul and a knowledge of melody, counter melody and harmony, but instead with computers that can turn out similar beat rhythms in a mathematical loop, and composers with a page or two of repetitive phrases put together in a different order to make another "new song".
In my humble opinion of course! This is why I listen to stuff on you tube, to get away from the "pneumatic drill" sound that has become modern music.
@chromatic8 I agree partly with you if you don't mind. However, I must admit that some of the new stuff is as excellent as in my youth. Not everything was great than either if I think about Doris Day and Maria Callas. Last not least music is a part of human taste. One person likes the sound of an owl the other the one of the nightingale. The Platters are timeless as it is quality and professionalism as are some of the new musicians.
@profgyland Yes you are quite right, music is all about the listener and if it hits the spot, in my case most of the modern stuff does not simply because its too repetitive, everything has to have a bass drum thumping away like a metronome whereas a bit of variety would be really nice, but I do appreciate there are some top notch composers and singers out there.
You sound like a young thinking person of mature years same as me so good luck to you, I'm 65 but musically have no age whatsoever.
What is wrong? Don't I no longer understand pop music? - I think I am getting old, or better, I am old...... but the memories are still young and forever with this magic music.
@cullivoebhoy Son is rather a little too much. If you would be my father you have to be over 100 years old. :) I also like to mention that it was the opposite the air was rather dirty at the time and sex was clean at least cleaner than today, The youth today have their idols as we had them. Some of these modern stuff is excellent and very professional. It maybe different for some however, my way of staying young is not to mix with old people. Most of my friends are between 20 and max. 30 years.
One of my all-time favourite songs. The backup vocals and tasteful instrumental accompaniment provide a perfect platform for Tony Williams' lead vocal. The result is great sounding music that does justice to the song. I love the Platters. They seem to know that the important thing is the music, and everything else is secondary. Does anyone know who the genius was who did the musical arrangement?
This song is my favorite ever. Just listen to that voice. No one can come close. And the kids today love all that loud screaming in songs. I was fortunate to be a teenager during this time and still love all the great music of the 50s.
The song haunts me. The voice is beyond ANYTHING that will EVER singagain. It was a microphone and NOTHING ELSE. FANTASTIC AND NEVER WILL BE HEARD LIKE THIS AGAIN!!
Its 4.37 in the morning, and I just cannot let go of this music and this mood...I want to sit here all night/morning and listen and break my heart over and over again...Like it was when I was sixteen, and Life was just great.....thanks for all this lovely music...I'm happy I found you...............tc
One of the most romantic songs from the 50's. The Platters were the best of the groups singing romantic songs and featured the incredible voice of Tony Williams.
I had this played at my wedding..the first dance. The Bastard left me and our baby 2 years and 2 months later, he ran off with a 17 year old girl (almost half his age). Never mind, that was 16 years ago and I still love the song for what it is.. a lovely old fashioned love song.
Tony used to give me goose bumps when he reached for those big high notes and caressed them so easily. One of the most unknown and underrated pop voices to hit the American popular music scene. When Buck Ram took over the Platters and with the release of "Only You" it was Tony who single-handedly, in my opinion, carried them onward and upward. You left your mark Tony, we'll never forget you. Tony passed peacefully in his sleep at a young 64 years of age.
Can't get over the VOICE. Back then, they had NO high tech sound equipment, not even stereo - just one microphone, and you either had it or you didn't...these guys had it.
@SamIamGolden Boy, is that ever true! So hard to convince young people today that they really have never heard great music. Oh, well . . . at least we had the experience.
