this was actually an actual card room in Gardenia california in the 70's back when cardrooms were legal back then, everyone deals their own cards and is mostly low ball draw games
Saw this film a couple of years back at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica. George Segal was there and told great stories about the production, If he hasn't done the DVD extras yet someone needs to talk him into it.
The players are actually real poker players, the room is not a ream poker room but a very good staged room, very authentic looking. I like the fact that the players are acting like real poker players, the woman has lost so she keeps hurrying everyone up to try to make up for her loss. And the explanation about how there must be cheating going on because shes losing and shes a good player, thats what they always say.
Im sure you can find the film on the internet somewhere. The dvd is on Amazon and I think it can be downloaded from the internet torrent sites too. Great film.
What a remarkable artist Altman was. I love how he creates such wonderful atmosphere right away in the opening scene. He had such wonderful synergy with his actors and his crew.
This played Los Angeles last week and I'm sorry I missed it. I have seen it of course a number of years ago at LACMA. Thanks for posting.
Two things bothered me about this movie:
1. The ending seemed rushed, like it came out of nowhere
2. Why was that girl in the bar at the beginning walking around without pants?

@TheNEWfilmfanatic99
totally disagree about the ending and the girl wasnt wearing pants because it was a nude bar and she was a dancer

@durdenwasright Thanks for clearing that other part up

The blackboard has the initials of the players and it keeps track of who is playing at each table and reserves a spot for each.

i don't think it's as good as Long Goodbye or Nashville, but any Altman film is worth my time.

What's the guy on the platform with blackboard doing? What's his job?
I wish I could see this film again. It must be 25 years since I have seen it.

the commentator mentions this when the film starts. I think in today's era it would all be computer generated.
