If I'm correct, I believe Mary Wells wrote this song. Both versions are well done. It's very rare for cover versions to surpass the original, but it happens at times. It depends on your tatse, what artist you favor, what style pleases you more.
Mary originally wanted to just submit the song, but Berry loved how she sang it, and made her a recording artist as well...I remember Mary's version even when i was a kid...I must been no more than 5 or 6 years old!!!...That's how good Mary affected me...but I DO LOOOVE BETTY EVERETT TOO!!...I don't have a favorite, I never knew Betty recorded this until today!
Mary wells version is great too, agree it doesn't matter which one is best. But it's Betty Everett if you like stomping Northern soul dancers . absolutely fantastic stuff!
I think you mean Mary Wells. Berry Gordy took her (she composed it) through 22 takes. That's what it's so raspy. Mary Wells, not Maxine Brown (who is, though, just about my fave singer. Check it her LIVE version of "All In My Mind" which you have been confusing this with. Regards, Jim.

I love both Mary Wells and Betty Everett!
Gotta say Mary's raw voice makes the original untouchable though :D

Maxine Brown had the hit with this song.
It was much better than this one. Betty was good too.....but check out Maxine's cover. I think you'll agree.

This is GREAT!!! Better than Mary Wells!

It's good, but NOT even close to Wells' version in my opinion. Deep soul mavens will take my side on this one without a doubt.

Mary Wells' version is great, but Betty Everett's is even better - she belts the hell out of it (and she sounds plenty 'deep' to me...).

Mary Wells peed on this song. Even with her raspy sound, she put her name on it.

@reddvelvet The rasp supposedly developed as the inevitable result of having to do over 20 takes in a row before BG was satisfied. Some stamina!
