That wasn't what defined skill in vanilla.. it was the progress to get to the point where this mage got to. The individual work that had to be done, the amount of runs you did in instances to get a 3-4 spellpower increase on that ring while it took over an hour to get a group ready and summoned to the instance. And if you really wanted to compete at that level you'd get stack after stack after stack of the best possible food, all possible elixirs, scrolls, you name it. That's what vanilla was.

I only started being a macro user when I got heavily into pvp because there I feel its actually necessary. Against NPC targets though, no way. Its better, but its not remotely necessary.

So from what I can tell, this raid had 4 tanks, with all of them easily getting 2 shot by hateful strike unless the healers hurried up and topped them all up before the next ones came. If any healer today gets stressed out by, say, Chimaeron, they'd probably faint trying to do this :P

@Artictoc Yeah, back in those days healers had to keep tanks at full all the time. You even see this in early BC content (Particularly if your raid was geared for THAT content and not over-gearing it.). Nowadays healers just blame you for having to be healed. Back then they actually did their job.

@pillbox82 The game is fine, it's players that ruin it. GearScore is a perfect example. It's a fine tool but can be devastating when in the wrong hands. And I take it by casual, you mean too easy? You have to understand that during vanilla, there were barely any addons. No tactics videos on YT, just vague texts explaining the tactics. Now you have things like DBM and such. Let's see you say casualisation again after u've cleared LK25HC on 0% buff.

@CanderousXOrdo You can't really say it's the players ruining the game since people are very easily influenced in this game. (See Arena numbers in TBC vs now). Before GearScore they'd check your gear manually and require you to link achievement.

Everything is pugged because A) Normal mode is easier than if the content was released without modes and B) Gear resets every patch so there's a large number of people that meet the gear req. to do top raids.

@CanderousXOrdo Sorry but I disagree - Raidleader was available in vanilla, and to be quite honest, LK was the only 'challenging' fight in WOTLK, just name 1 challenging fight inside ICC EXCEPT for the LK. Also I love how naxx was so fucking easy in wotlk, sir, you clean naxxramas in vanilla then talk about things being hard.

Epics were not special, they were about as remarkable as greens. Because of this, the game became a race for gear thus turning so many people into elitest asshats.

I don't know about the later half of wrath and cata, never played it.
