This video was made to correct archaic laws in the citizenship laws. I was a Lost Canadian. Born in the states to CANADIAN parents. I did not know at age 24 you had to sign a letter of retention to keep Canadian citizenship and thus
@PastWWEEpisodes - Honestly the best and only real way to find out is to go yourself. You could try living in canada for 90 days or so and see how it goes....if you like it you can go back, if not don't. That's what I did for Japan and now I am here for a full year. I am just going to see how it goes.
I love waking up every morning in Canada.Hell I love waking up..Canadian's love everyone and most everyone love's Canadian's and you want to know why? We have no time for hate or disrespecting other's so wake up world and try to be like a Canadian for a day, you'll have a great day and you won't have to worry about to much..It's a pleasure to say I'm Canadian and I'll always have respect, compassion and be happy toward's other's and it don't matter who you are.We treat people like our own! Peace..
LOL april 17th is my birthday! best birthday ever for a hetalia fan girl who's fav. charactor is canada. waking up for your birthday surrounded by canada! ♥w♥~!
at first it would be scarey, but then later on you'd realize that it's pretty cool. Until everyone doesn't know where you are, or who you are for that matter..
Only problem is I dont really have any of my father's canadian documents. I have applied for his records to be searched. I understand I will be getting a letter stating his entire canadian immigration history. Would this letter suffice as proof enough for the fact that he was indeed a canadian citizen at the time of my birth?
I too recently found out that i am Canadian by way of father. He is deceased now but was a canadian citizen at the time of my birth. I was born in India and have lived here ever since. I m now 25. Im going to apply for the Canadian citizenship.

Is anyone else having to show proof of the date your parent became a U.S. citizen (or any other country) and whether or not they relinquished their Canadian citizenship? That's what the Canadian embassy told me I have to do. My mom is deceased. I got her passport from Canada (relatively easy) and now I have to get the date she became an American citizen from the Department of Homeland Security (A complete nightmare...take a number, sit down, and wait 5 months). Is anyone else having to do this?
Can you say "refugee"? In spanish it is refugiado. No matter what language you use, it could allow you to wake up Canadian. Remember that word "refugee".
I just found out I'm Canadian by way of my mother. Does anyone know if I need my mother's orginal birthcertificate or can I use a copy of the orginal in order to prove citizenship? (Trying to get proof of citizenship card). I have my orginal birthcertificate but my mom just gave me a photocopy of hers.
@emb145flyer If you're within Canada, you can contact the CIC Call Centre at 1-888-242-2100. If you're outside Canada, contact your local Canadian visa office. On our website, go to "Contact Us", then under "If you are anywhere outside of Canada" click "Canadian visa office" for a complete list. (We'd give you a link, but you cannot post URLs in the YouTube comments.)
@emb145flyer Just make sure you follow the instructions to the letter! Also, the photos MUST be done correctly! Print off a copy of the photo instructions and take it to a professional who can follow the requirements. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME AS U.S. passport photos. When you get your citizenship ID put it somewhere safe! It's as difficult to replace as to get in the first place! Congratulations! Eh! :0)
You can join the lost Candians website- Its a great website and the members will give you a ton of useful info. I was born in the USA to a Canadian Father and American Mother , My wife too is a lost Canadian also born to a Canadian Father and American Mother. We both have gathered our Birth Certificates and our Father's and are in the process of submitting our application for Canadian Citizenship Certifcates.
@emb145flyer Same here! I am canadian by way of my mother as well. A good chunk of the kids in my family are also Canadian due to this new law. Props to Canada for getting this law out!
@emb145flyer just pay an attorney to sign it, any officer of a foreign court may sign it as a certified copy. they have to write their name title and a few other things on it. i say pay an attorney to do it because they probably wont want to compare it to the original since its such an odd thing......i had my attorney sign mine since he was already on retainer.
Check out Lost Candians website. If a woman was not married and had children prior to 1 Jan 1947. her children would be Canadian. If she was married to someone not born in Canada, they would take the Father's citizenship. This double standard is effecting people born during WW2

JDrobertson91 - The applications for my wife and I are on their way. I have about 30
family members that have had their citizenship restored. However, I have 3 cousins born to My Canadian aunt. Her 2 sons were born before Jan 1 1947. They are not Candians due to the fact they had an American Father. Her daughter was born in 1959 and is a Canadian due to the 1947 rule. I found out I was Canadian on youtube
It's not due to the fact that they had an American Father, it's due to the fact that their mother didn't have Canadian citizenship but UK citizenship.
My father was born in Canada in 1914 and became a US citizen in 1948, however because he was living in the US in 1947 when Canadians became Canadians and no citizens of the UK, he never became Canadian.
So you might think then that your aunts sons could be dual UK citizens, however the UK has a rule that if she became a US citizen before 1949, then she is not elegible, nor are her children for Dual citizenship!
@jay2christine Yes. I also have my Canadian passport! If you go to the website mentioned in the video you can get it all completed. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON THE APPLICATION TO THE LETTER. When they want want original documents send originals! Once you get your card keep it in a very safe place! It's just 'aboot' ;0) as difficult to replace it as get it in the first place!
After you have your citizenship you can then get a passport! email me if it gets confusing EH! mycomplaint43 at yahoo com
Avro201- The rules at that time were diffrent. If you left Canada and were living outside of the Country, Apparently you lost your Citizenship. I worked for Canadian Airlines and wanted to take my Dad to Europe for a trip, Thats how we found out.
My wife is also a "lost Candian" and we both are now preparing to move to Canada
My Dad was born in Winnipeg, Served in the RCAF during ww2, He was wounded overseas and spent time in the Hospital. He moved to California with My American mom and I was born in California in 1959.
My Dad had a US green card and when he went to the Canadian Consul General was advised he was " No Longer Canadian because he was out of the country too long. So much for your Wartime Service. I am applying for my Certificate of Canadian citizenship, as this means alot to me
@lasbagman1 This is a debate in Canada at the moment. There is a movement to have citizenship expire due to the fact that many people live their lives outside of Canada, not contributing to its welfare and then expect free health care when they are sick, asylum when they get in trouble, and rescue when things turn sour. This is a recent sentiment so I'm not sure why your father had his citizenship revoked.
If you were born in Canada like me and been living in our home man native land for over 30 + yrs and then decide to move you will always be Canadian no matter what..I have relocated to Australia and will always be Canadian til the end of time,I love my home country Canada and will always return evey yr..
Omg yes, its soooo pretty in the winter and the summer, but not the fall the leaves start to pile up O_O everywere you go in the winter everything is a porttrait.
Yes Canada is very beautiful and VERY big, And despite what someone else said, its so beautiful in Canada during the fall (as well as most seasons, especially the winter). Way nicer than anything I've seen in New England area.
oh shit, I'm gonna wake up canadian! My dad was born in Canada but lived almost his entire life in the United States without bothering to get his citizenship (he still has a green card).
hah but seriously its all good, I kinda wanna be Canadian anyway. Thinking about joining the Canadian Navy, some relatives of mine told me you only see a gun for a few weeks in basic training and never pick it up again. Great way to pay for school.
If only it were that easy to gain American citizenship! My mom's has dual Canadian-American citizenship and she's been trying to get my dad and I US citizenship for years. Well, at least we have green cards now. Before we had to drive nonstop 24-hours to the border to have our visas renewed every single summer.
being canadian will be a shame when quebec will separate because a majority of very stereotypical distinctive cultural elements of canada have been stolen from quebec and canada has almost no history without quebec find me one thing that canada has done by itself lol

Wake, up, Canada is a nice place, a 20% vote to an ethnic group could change our country for ever
The Canada that we love is only ever one election away from this at any time
Unless we stop calling people racist, and start referring to them as preservationists.
Canada could fall to different laws in the future. Under the new law we might not be able to talk about this!

I am applying for my Certificate of Canadian citizenship, as this means alot to me
lasbagman1 2 years ago

I hope you get it. That's disgraceful that our country would revoke your father's citizenship! I personally blame the conservatives haha

GauvinMTL 2 years ago
Lmao whats one thing that Quebec has done, but seriously the whole of Canada considers the Quebecois a joke.
