I really love this film and don't understand why so many people hate it. Yes, I missed Daniel/Ralph but it gave a good feminine side to the story and Hilary Swank was brilliant. Pat Morita was impressive as always. The whole storyline was interesting. I still think that they should have made The Karate Kid 5 with Pat Morita, Hilary Swank and Ralph Macchio. It would be great.

Karate kid worked in the 80's. But in the 90's...with all the feminist and equality stuff. Plus the fact by the 90's martial arts were nothing new anymore. In the 70's they were new...80's they matured in the 90's they were just 'part of' a movie about something else. Remakes are sometimes good but a Trilogy is where it should end..really.

@MrCoolaaa1 I have a feeling that Daniel LaRusso never went to college since on the second film when he asked if he can go with Mr. Miyagi to Okinawa, and Mr. Miyagi said he should save his money for college and Daniel told him that he's more important to him than college and getting a job. Also on the third film, he said that he's not going to college to get a break from school, so instead, he worked in the banzai shop with Mr. Miyagi. So my guess is that Daniel is the new owner of the shop.

In my opinion, the very best Karate Kid in the franchise. Can't stand hearing that Ralph Macchio even today, probably the greatest miscasting in the movie industry's history. The only thing that kept the original Karate Kid going for me was Mr. Morita and the nostalgia factor. Thank God for KK4.

I simply fell in love with Miss Swank, and Mr. Morita as always a legend.

I was pretty easy to please as a kid, but even I knew this movie was lacking after viewing it the first time. I've eased up on it over time though. It's actually a decent flick when it focuses on building Julie and Miyagi's relationship. The film fails when it has to remind itself that it's a karate kid movie and lazily crafts a conflict between Julie and that over-the-top goon squad. The circumstances in which they are presented as a threat begged not to be taken seriously as i remember.

Instead of calling this movie "The Next Karate Kid", a better title for this movie should have been called "The Karate Kid Part 4: The Next Kid" since the title "The Next Karate Kid" makes it sound like that this is not the fourth film (it feels like it's a totally different movie that has nothing to do with the Karate Kid films). I didn't know that it was the fourth film until I saw Mr. Miyagi/Pat Morita in the theatrical trailer where the new karate kid called him Mr. Miyagi.

That's true. I guess they should have had Ralph Macchio on this film too where he can sort of be an assistant to Pat Morita teaching karate to the new karate kid since by now, he is probably an expert at karate. (I know Pat mentioned him only one time in the movie). However, if they were going to make a fifth karate kid film, Ralph can be on it but, not Pat because Pat passed away in November 2005. Hopefully Ralph is not being bulled alone by Terry Silver, John Kreese, and Mike Barnes.

Pat mentioned about Ralph in the karate kids home where she went into her room to change clothes and Pat went into her room without knocking to ask how school was and she yelled at him that he should have knocked so Pat walked away and apologized for not knocking, and when she came out of her room he said this: "before I lived with a friend named Daniel-San where Daniel-San came to my room without knocking and I came to Daniel-San's room without knocking" meaning he's not used to knocking.

I agree. Pat should have mentioned about Ralph more. I guess the reason he didn't mention about Ralph more than once is because, Ralph is from Los Angeles and Pat traveled to Boston where he met this new karate kid named Julie where nobody knows who Daniel Larrusso (Ralph's movie name) is. Also, another reason he wasn't mentioned as much is because, the first three films were almost like practicing for a tournament and this fourth one is for the kid to use karate to get rid of her anger.

With Daniel not being on this movie, it makes me feel like Mr. Miyagi left him alone in Los Angeles (I know Daniel's mom is living in Fresno while he is in Los Angeles) and nobody is around to protect Daniel from Terry Silver, John Kreese, and Mike Barnes. That girl Ali was his other friend but, she ended the friendship on the second film between she and Daniel, and Jessica from the third film moved away from him. So Ali and Jessica are not around to help keep him safe.

Maybe they should have done that since the whole point of the third one is for the Cobra Kai instructors to come back for revenge just so that they can get their business back so others in the tournament will think they're good and want to take classes with them but, once it showed Daniel beating Mike Barnes, they knew they were out of business forever where they should have stopped doing the films then.
