It's not just a wolf you're being chased by... it's a 300 foot tall mega wolf made out of flame and despair that leaps 1000 feet at a time melting time and space around you. @u@
@bladecatcherX99 FACT: Converge have accomplished more than you or whatever shitty band you probably play in can ever hope to. Mastodon know, this and that's why they like them. Go play in traffic.
@davethehostage damn, so i dislike one band and make my OPINION public, and i get raped, even though i said fact it doesnt make it any less of an opinion since i said it, and if your wondering im not in a band, never have been, and am not the type of person to play in a band, and nah, ill stay away from the traffic :)
@bladecatcherX99 That wasn't a raping, what's coming your way is a raping.
I understand it's your opinion, I simply feel that your opinion is a stupid opinion and it should stay in the basement with all of the other stupid opinions.
Also, in all seriousness, when you watch a drummer from a profile-view, the optic blur makes it all seem so much more "out-there", ya know? Just try tappin' along with it, and you'll see that it ain't that bad ;^D...even though it's totally Bad-ASS! XD
@SOADVSSOAD at first when your trying to get faster you wont notice or think that your getting any faster at all, it just takes a bit and a lot of practice and youll be like "wow i never thought i could do this" im just telling you this from experience.
my friend plays drums and he is really good, we both love mastodon. he said "the wolf is loose" is one the easier songs to play on drums. Honestly, that's pretty fuckin scary once u think of it
true it is cos most of the stuff is easy but i tried playing oblivion and completely failed u just can match his hands probably the best in metal drumming
thanks for replying, his stuff on crack the skye is very jazz influenced, so it's hard on the hands. my friend said his other really hard songs were capillarian crest, the intro to megalodon, hearts alive, parts of island, and pretty much all of remission he said. do you agree?, plz respond, thx =)
yeh remission is insanely hardm umm i can like part of capillarian crest but other stuff is just ridiculous to get it perfect cos u don't actually hear like all the ghost notes on the track it's only when u see him play do u notice how intricate his parts are if your friends wants to learn a mastodon song then he shud learn either blood and thunder, crystal skull or divinations
Tony by a long shot. No offense to Brann, but he's not in Tony's league. He won the Guitar center drum-off at 9, as well as having been educated by Dennis Chambers. Brann is good, but Tony is king of young drummers.
he doesnt have a set time for his stuff. He was self-taught mainly and got this style by fucking around by playing along with guitar work. i dont think he sits there and tries to find the correct rhythm for a song and sticks with it, the guitar players do that as well
now that i think about it, if i was being chased through the forest by a fucking crazy wolf, this would be the epic get away song, fuck yea, mastodon fucking rocks!
tomas is sick as well, brann has more of a signature style though with busy single stokes, triplet tom fills in 4/4. tomas thinks more outside the box with odd time signatures.
It feels that way, but it's not so. Haake has stated that everything he does is in 4/4, even the foot patterns, he just uses odd-note permutations to get it to feel that way.
@IronJura Get a kit if you haven't already and practice hand technique. It won't help with the creative side of things but after developing some basic independence the key to playing how Brann does is just learning how to pull off really quick fills and still keep time.
@Shippingshit how about sell all your useless bullshit like tvs and video games, buy a drumset and become better than him? that's more realistic than selling your soul!
@shredder731 plenty of drummers. not knocking Brann. guy has major talent, lots of energy, but he is still "young". there are plenty of drummers that for sure Brann looks up to with great respect Danny Carey being one of them for sure. Thomas Haake of Meshuggah, Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree but these guys have years of playing over Brann, so don't get all offended b/c your favorite drummer is everyone elses creme of the crop.
@shredder731@shredder731 plenty of drummers. not knocking Brann. guy has major talent, lots of energy, but he is still "young". there are plenty of drummers that for sure Brann looks up to with great respect Danny Carey being one of them for sure. to me, being fast on double bass or blast beats isn't really talent in my interpretation, it's like going to the gym every day, eventually you will learn but the way brann feels rythm and plays, thats really not just something you can learn or teach, you're born with it, IMO!
blast beats take a different type of talent but being rhythmic and having dynamic is just as hard as learning a blast beat you just have to learn of acquire it in a different way.if you get what im saying.
hes incredible but the thing is death metal drummers are the best in my opinion is they play wierd time signatures in blazing fast tempos and they overall are just super talented
Agree with you most of it. Really though half the "tempos" that you would hear in metal(not nu metal) is rythmic illusions which can be like hearing a cut time beat(1/2) in a 4/4 mark time or a 6/8 beat in a 3/4 mark time tempo which can give the seemingly fast tempo. blast beats just really cover every beat in every measure. drumming like branns though is unique and like that of a jazzy style. If theres any drummer in here that can read sheet music then you probably understood what i was saying
ya man i totally agree cause brann dailor has a jazz background because he had a jazz drum teacher and he also adds his jazz background to metal music which is revolutionizing metal. he is very unique but blast beats are so difficult and can be put in wierd time signatures, plus death metal drummers play super fast double bass which take years to master and is incredible exhausting, so are blast beats. its one of those things where you have to condition yourself. george kollias is my fav
I dont consider constantly hitting your triggered bass drums talented. read up on triggers and why some metal bass drums sound like plastic and why they play so fast
well dude i have been playing drums for 5 years and let me tell you drum triggers are not cheating nor do they make you go faster. all drum triggers do is clear up each stroke on the bass drum so it doesnt sound like a blur of bass drum strokes. this is because they go so fast that they need these
yeah i agree. im starting to get really bored with death metal drumming at the moment what with the constant blasting and double bass. its fucking cool and that but to listen to brann its a breath of fresh air
brann is great because he has that perfect touch hes got that finesse in his playing where no matter how fast he plays everything is dead on and even never sloppy or muddy sounding especially with his rolls
The cat's got great skills, not only are his rolls and fills smooth they all sound even, you rarely hear him hit the snare or toms too loud or too soft. His strokes are all at an even volume.
totally agree, people sometimes forget the importance of dynamics and accenting! and he is immaculate in maintaing a constant standard level of volume throughout his playing. know who else took pride in his dynamics? mr bonham
ive got mine that low too and thought the same thing when i saw his. haha, i like how rimshots turn out with it that low but it does look sorta weird but who cares right? brann does it!

Actually, most of his patterns go 1 2 snare 4, which is essentially half-time.
