This is why people need more experience sailing. This is why you carry a storm sail with you. They could have reefed the main down and started the boat moving forward giving them rudder control and actually made a fun day sailing out of it. Why do peoples brains freeze when they get into these mild sitsuations, all they have to do is think and get busy working on a solution.
Motoring with all that wind and a good mainsail? My god, what would you do in the days of sail? Learn some self reliance.
