Trust me, the anime has a drastically different feel and many minor and major differences from the manga. The anime tended to focus on the more typical anime stuff like "The power of friendship!" TM, while the manga is much darker and more awesome :)

@Khono i just don't like the direction he took the manga in. puck turned from comic relief into a useless caricature, isidro is an obnoxious and thoroughly unnecessary character, serpico, while likable, is also unnecessary, and farnese is a bitch. miura spends hundreds of issues painting guts as the soulless lone killer, then saddles him with a group of idiot tagalongs.
also, i thought that the fights were becoming repetitive and the comic started filling with gore solely for the sake of it.

I find his newer characters to be rich, with great depth and historical/folklore connections. I'm neutral on the changes to Puck. He was cooler before but his new demeanor fits in quite well, I think, with the additions to the party.
I've never really been into it for the gore or heroic poses. I love its earthy, not-so-ridiculous action and interesting talk

Depends where you live. Just going around Toronto I saw an anime shop (they're quite distinctive, with their anime posters). They had tons of manga, including many berserk volumes. You can try buying them from amazon or from ebay if you're into risks. If you ask for them for xmas, make sure whoever your asking knows what it is! There's a stupid dubbing company called Manga... don't get their stuff.
