@letusbelennon No lyrics but a brief synopsis: A wife complaining about the stupidness of his husband. She was give a man with 'mans body and man's measure' but 'mind had been taken away while head was still left', 'brains had been removed from the forehead' and such. And she herself would have been worth a better man, more handsome, richer and sturdier.
As a male myself I guess this is a quite universal feeling women every now and then have, everywhere and at every era of the human history ;)
Oh please! What the **** are you saying ? I guess you don't know that Karelians are Finno-Ugrics and Russiana are destroying their culture and language...
Uh huh. You do realize that the only reason Finns have Kalevala is because the Orthodox church didn't frown as much on shamanism and paganism as the Lutheran one, which EXTERMINATED all such singing on the territory of Finland proper within several generations of everyone converting?
Hehe. Mitä vittua?? So, what you're saying is that in Russia there is no nationalistic people? That over there people are supporting minorities? Are you saying that Kalevala is more Karelian than Finnish? My father is Karelian and my mother is a Finn, and I thing that's really offending against Finns.. Sä et tiedä mtn...
I wouldn't dream of saying that Russia has no nationalistic people - what an odd leap of logic. I am saying, however, that the government of the Republic of Karelia exerts efforts to preserve the various Finno-Ugric dialects on its territory to the extent it's able, given its poverty. And yes, Kalevala is Karelian more than it is Finnish. It was mostly recorded on the territory of Viena Karelia, in the local dialect, which was quite dissimilar from standard Finnish. You want to argue otherwise?
Some theories claim that poems (now days known from Kalevala where actually born in Ostrobothnia and Middle-Finland and came to Karjala among people who were banished from Ostrobothnia by crishtian people. The truth is in Kalevala there is both Western and Eastern influences...
And one more thing to you AxmxZ. You didn't know that Värttinä is in fact from Eastern Finland, not from Russia..? The language they sing in is a dialect of Finnish, not Karelian. I guess I should know this one better than you.
Nice debate by the way :P To the point: Why do you think Kalevala is the national epic of both Karelians and Finnish speaking Finns? Those stories of Kalevala were told all the way in Western Finland. Of course Swedish speaking people had nothing to with Kalevala. Myths of Kalevala where there, among Finns and Karelian long before they were written down... Some Finns preserved their paganic religion all the way till 20th century.
Finns and Karelians were originally same tribe, that had pretty much the same believes. Of course, we are to different people now. And Värttinä is singing in Finnish..
It's funny how the bad russians get to be blamed for destroying culture and language of finno-ugrics, when in fact this culture had a great influence on us, russians as well as ours did on theirs. I think that finnish-speaking people will find the expression "Vot i kaalina, vot i maalina" rather unmotivated in their language, whereas it makes perfect sense in russian, and yes, the rest of the song is sung in finnish.
Considering the fact that Finland was a part of the russian empire only two ceturies ago, it would make perfect sense. And, if i may say, the common ties between russia and finland go as far as pre-christian times. A lot of folk, both russian and finnish, contain certain indicators that could not have come from christianity at all.
sorry, not enough space to put it all on one piece, this was an attempt to respond to r00tg04t's comment, but apparently youtube placed it into the wrong space
Wow! =) I loved the version of this song by Hedningarna but this clip is just loaded with the sort of Having Fun that makes you smile even if just watching on a computer screen.
This is nice too but I prefer Pauliina's version. :)

'Hedningarna' have also an excellent version of this 'Vottikalinna':
watch?v=DA7acExn9xo
However with totally different lyrics.
Then they have also a song called 'Aivoton' (Brainless):
watch?v=_FcAQlfx384
Which in turn shares lot of text with Värttinä version of 'Vot i kaalina'.
This is actually how cultural loans have always worked and are still working in areas with no lawyer activity.

can anyone tell me where to find lyric translations? I love them, and I agree that the language doesn't matter, but I just wonder.

Right, 'cause I DON'T know Russian, and totally CAN'T hear it in this song. Like, at all. :))
Incidentally, there are at least four dialects of Karelian out there, so the boundary between "Finnish dialect" and "Karelian dialect" is quite hazy.
