Ustad Vilayat Khan

Vilayat khansaheb's rendering of raag Shahana is so beautiful and divine. He is simply the greatest sitarist the world has ever produced. Shame that both this sons Shujaat and Hidayat are terrible classical musicians. All they do is get involved with this new fusion music but they resemble nothing like their father. Just goes to show how our ancient art of music is being diminished and tarnished by the next generation.

What is truly amazing is that the surbahar is tuned one fifth lower than the sitar. So Ustad Vilayat Khan is fretting in the standard sa at the 7th fret tuning while Ustad Shujaat's sa on his surbahar is at his 10th fret ('ma as sa ..as in such raags as Ragishree ) so to echo his father Shujaatji must compensate in an instant. This is reverence and not a contest. Thanks for posting!!!

The term "ustad" is been widely used for lots of classic music veterans but goodness gracious me !! Just look at Vilayat Khan Sahib's posture, control and delivery ?? Absolutely out of this world. He is not just an 'ustad', he is 'ustadon ka ustaad'. WOW !!!

As much as Ustad Shujaat Khan has played he cannot come close to his fathers style of playing. There will never be another Ustad Vilayat Khan.

His clean strokes and understanding of how to lay each note down on the scale is excellent and it is feelings and emotions about each Raag that comes out through his fingers.

@harrymodo2 - Playing the sitar as a player is easy. There are now thousands of people who have sitars and regularly play the instrument.

Ustad Vilayat Khan was an exceptional human being who crossed the bounds of music and created new Raags and kept on improvising the old ones.

Shujaat Khan has been in petty politics and does not get along with any of his cousins. He has a chip on his shoulder as if people should show respect without proving excellence.
