That being said, a few people have suggested that over the years, and I've always thought it wouldn't have enough give to provide much of a range. Not sure.
try a metal guitar string that way you can hook pick ups on it. also if your bent on automating it have something the wobbles back and forth on the string. kinda like a wamy bar. but. might still have a different sound. and it might still be fun to make, just a thought.

this insturment is built to act like a one stringed guitar with only option of controlling the notes by using the tuning key. and by the way, i would suggest using wood cover for the instrument to raise your volume
thats a really cool idea. just a tip...try some metal wire. attach different widths for different notes.

Lol! I use to do something alike this when I was a kid, with a shoebox and wine cork as a bridge. Your rubber band sounds too loose, but still funny!
