  • "and as i stand still here, i prefer the stillness. i am tired of earth. i am tired of being caught in the tangles of these people's live."

  • My machine shop teacher turned me on to this in high school, he would put it on and jam at the lathe or mill. haha

I wonder why most machinists like music while they work.

He was a good teacher. Thanks for the music.

  • open all 6 parts of glassworks and play at the same time!

    IT'S A GODCRAFT

  • so beautiful

  • It looks so easy to play on paper, but keeping your right hand and left hand going at the right pace is proving very challenging for someone as out of practice at playing the piano as I am. I only wish I could sound half as good. It is truly one of my most favourite pieces of music, and I am a huge Philip Glass fan.

  • Not too ruin anyone's fun here, but this uses ideas from Schumann's music to prove that emotions can be evoked without the writer feeling them. I think it's beautiful and moving, which proves him right. It's actually very cynical. Hurrah for music degree's.

  • @olithestrangish Just found that out in a lecture myself, today.

  • It's like the piano were dancing... And he invites me to dance too.

  • beautiful

  • I want to see what Radiohead would do with this. I want.

  • It sounds like Chopin's Etude meet Chillout music

  • I'm going to find who disliked this and castrate them.

  • I just herd this song in the car on "Spa 68" XM Radio...I now want to take piano lessons again :-) Thank you Mr.Glass Tucson,AZ

  • I listen to this and think to myself, who needs lyrics when we can all think and feel whatever we are thinking and feeling. This is real. So perfect. Delightful :) x

  • Precious and Beautiful

  • Takin ya back to the origins of the universe and whastebver anmd shit .

Fuck ya stupid little fags hangin around in art gallaries tryin to dissect the stupid little meanings of broken chips of glass on frames while bastardizing the music of Phil

This song is the opening and the Closing parts are all of our lives..everything in

between is the parts of Our " Lives ".....we make it . YAH

  • I have always wondered what those two little clicks were beginning at 3:26.

  • @hippopowernow It's probably Mr. Glass moving around a bit. When listening to this very closely, you can actually hear him or somebody moving around. To me, it sounds like his shirt sleeves rolling up against the piano.

  • Doing anything with this piece playing in the background makes everything so much more beautiful

  • i can play this on the piano, it took me abouut, 1 month to learn.

  • @sexfreak77 OH

  • @sexfreak77 It is a minimalist piece though. I guess it's simplicity makes it more beautiful however :)

  • The difficulty in playing it correctly comes from each hand playing different time signatures. Left hand is regular 4/4 time and right hand is in 6/8 time. While the notes are simple it is the offset time signatures that give it complexity. And beauty.

  • @eighty88eightkeys

Its a very beautiful piece, I agree.. The straight 8th against the triplets put the 4/4 time creates a rich texture and illustrious sound. The score really contains no real "6/8" time. The piece could be notated that way... It's all just "4/4" time. The top register is playing triplets while the low register plays duples.

  • as simple as it is to play it but also as hard to perfect it! pure genius...

  • this guy is a genius!

  • @thoroughlyThoreau what's wrong with community college?

  • Breathtaking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • compare this with

"Seventy by Wouter Joseph Smekens, Philip Glass"(1997/2007)

    a well-received tribute

    you keep on listening at

    it's on iTunes

  • @thoroughlyThoreau Yes, you hit the nail on the head. I'm the one who started your little debate.

  • @thoroughlyThoreau I will if you agree to take an English course. Judging from what you just typed and a quick Google of your username, you could use one.

  • @thoroughlyThoreau It's funny that you'd be so insecure as to delete the comment with a single typo in it. And guess what? You're showing exactly why I couldn't care less about comments on Youtube. Thanks for trying though!

  • @thoroughlyThoreau I don't think that someone looking to one up a person in semantics on Youtube comments can really be considered one who gives legitimate criticism. A piece of music can be called a song, as it retains essentially the same meaning (though songs generally have vocals. However, the word's meaning has become very broad with more recent music).

  • It's funny.

It is indeed tonal enough that it not be recognised as a 'whole new tendency' and whatever else. Especially harmonically... it follows the many many years coming before it strictly.

But I fail to see why it is so criticised by those people call "academics". And it... might be seen as innovative in form.

Don't exactly love it, but I do like it

Chi c'era in quel vento?

  • peaceful

  • Food for thought: Minimalist music like this employs the idea that when you hear one idea repeated time and time again with only slight variations, you are able to hear it more truly, purely as a collection of sounds. The same sometimes goes for words: When you repeat a word many times out loud, it often ends up sounding strange because you are finally hearing it as a contrived combination of sounds.

  • @winstontheband ...yes. Like a mantra. And like mantras, they are very centering and brings forth a state of bliss. You should see his documentary "Philip Glass in 12 parts". Its a two disc set.

  • I've just learned to play the complete piece. This piece is simply art.

  • @JacobMylund me too! yay

  • thank you for posting. it's wonderful! i'm looking forward to recording this piece on my upcoming cd...

i must say i love the phrase "walkman suitable". would the updated version of that be "ipod friendly"? i think the reason why my producers suggested this particular piece for my all philip glass recording is because it's also "breakfast radio suitable" and "drive time suitable" and "compilation suitable". ahaha.

  • It is because of pieces like this that i am eternally grateful for my eardrums.

  • :-)

  • Just fly away ..

  • great, youtubefilm, where there isn't a funny guy with the comment:

"2 people missed the like person because they like justin bieber",

    let's keep it that way

  • @mrhoihoi

I think the people that listen to Philip Glass are mostly those who choose to pretend that Bieber doesn't exist... not there aren't others.

"69 people must have palsy" "12 people are deaf and just guessing" "1,304 people are trying to be ironic"

damn you, new binary rating system...

  • Art begets art; tune your heart and mind with Philip and compose your own masterpieces

  • Quite honestly, one of the most breathtakingly beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. In a hundred years or so, there will be people who think the same as well.

Brings the emotions to the surface almost effortlessly. Mr. Glass, thank you for your music.

  • Lovely song! Thank you by upload this!

  • There is a song that is very similar to this which can be heard at the 8min21sec mark of "The F Word: Season 5: Episode 10 - 1/5", which can be searched for on youtube easily by entering the above quote.

Can someone please identify that song?

  • 6:26 minutes eargasm!!

  • Everyone wants the sheet music:

google "glasspages" and you shall find

  • @madmanmemo Thank you! :D

  • I heard this piece live and it was fucking EPIC!!

  • When I'm listening to this song, it's one of those rare moments when I'm proud to be a human being. Famine, war, hatred, anger, selfishness... but we are born beautiful beings loving beautiful things. One day computers will be able to create music but they will never be able to listen to it.

  • @darqfall what a wonderful thing to say..you truly see the unity of this universal thread..thank you for sharing your comment

  • @darqfall

    thank you friend....x

  • @darqfall Thank you frieind....x

  • @darqfall Unfortunately, I can only like your comment one time, and not one million :)

  • @darqfall amazing comment. i shall quote you.

  • Only 71,000 views. Sad so few people have felt the emotions of this piece. Haunting, sad, thoughts and memories of so many types go through my mind when I hear this. Looked for years to find this, and have spent countless hours lost in this masterpiece.

  • Only 71,000 views, a shame more people don't know and enjoy this music. Haunting, sad, thought provoking, memories. So much emotion in such a simple composition. Masterpiece

  • Beautiful

  • Just listening to this brilliant piece, watching my 9 mth old daughter asleep without a care in the world. Life doesn't get any better.

  • play it randomly and simultaneously in two or three windows, it's heavenly ;-)

  • @cuddlymaverick LOL .. i did it man its mad :P

  • if listen to it closely it seems like two people are playing it.

  • This firmly restores my faith in humanity.

  • This is just the most beautiful piece of music. This just destroys me. The only thing I can imagine better is to include the accordian as in the film Breathless - I cannot find that anywhere though :-(

  • alucinantes recuerdos ,,,la primera vez que oi esta cancion fue en la pelicula breathless....

  • One woefully unfortunate soul missed the like button.

  • Nothing compairs to the music of 'Philip Glass,

he is a Master in the Makeing ;)

  • Had to play the whole piece for my examinations this year...

Took some time to get things straight ;-)

  • I like the arrangement for marimba of this piece, but this is far better. I would like to learn piano so I could play this.

  • @scifidrummergeek where i can get the arrangement fot marimba?

  • @atticuspunx using the piano score works just fine, it fits within the range. there isn't an arrangement for marimba.

  • This reminds me of my old music theory class. We always laughed and had a good time. I learned to play this one in the middle of the night and I would play it in class sometimes. I learned to play Glass' Etude 2 which is basically Amazon River for piano. in class one day I taught two girls how to play a few parts of Amazon and we played it with six hand piano for fun. :) I miss class time, but I always have Glass on my mind.

  • this reminds me of ludovico einaudi. would you say his work is minimalist too?

  • Breathless with Richard Gere is where the music was used.

  • just fantastic

  • PG - I really like his music. Tks.

  • Philip Glass songs are awesome

  • wonderful....

  • What fascinates me about this piece, is that it always either sounds faster or slower compared to the previous listening.

Or I'm just mental of course.

  • thank you for posting it,i haven't started listening to him would you recommend anything...:)

  • @icketypickety "Facades" and "in the Upper Room: Dance VIII"

  • @RafikiGurl123 thanks dude

  • 3 against 2!!!

  • Hmmm, I don't know... I like Philip Glass, but you have to admit, he's a one trick pony. This song craves a melody. Or at least some variation in the rhythm or texture. Without any of them, I'm bored after two minutes of repetition.

  • Incredible.

  • I love 80's music.

  • more than beauty

  • Vintage Glass. Goosebumps 6:25 long ...

  • wern't this used as part of final fantasy 9? seems a bit similar but with a few different notes.

  • Totally agree bro, that's the first thought that sprung to mind when I opened this.

  • @jambostrife all it needs now is the flute over the top, still an awesome song without though.

  • @Jbamski

Burmecia's theme may as well have been pulled straight from this composition.

  • @Progenerator it would bring a lot of fame to philip glass if it was.

  • good one, standig

  • Used beautifully by Jim McBride in his 1983 highly underrated "Breathless"

  • now you'll die.

  • Dunno if anyone cares, but I can play it this fast now.

  • Where were you able to buy the music?

  • @Celiador thats amazing. i wish i could play the piano but i dont have the money to learn or a piano to practice on :(

  • @Celiador stfu i can play it faster than u

  • amazing. absolutely love this

  • Wonderful, a tonic for the mind.

  • CLASSIC

  • EPIC

  • Just a sunrise.

  • i loved it after the first 3 seconds!!!!!!!!

  • Whoa. That was probably the most incredible thing I've ever heard. I have a new goal: I will be able to play this piece before I die.

  • @Celiador

Agreed, I'm trying to learn right now.

  • @Celiador Suprisingly, its not that hard

  • @Celiador inshallah (God willing)

  • after several years still incredible.

    BW

  • it's so beautifull!

  • So amazing. Heard this at a piano recital and I didn't want it to end.

  • Just beautiful.

  • He is amazing!!!!!!!! Just amazing...the glasswork series is wow!

  • Beautiful...keep writing amazing music Philip Glass!!!

  • amazing!

  • Astonishingly beautiful and melancholy. It makes my heart race and my eyes well with tears.

  • Wow, a song on Youtube whose thread doesn't involve people bashing it? I guess that's the power of Philip Glass' music. Love this piece.

  • Glad you enjoyed it :) Glassworks is a great piece..would be great to hear it live sometime.

  • @timthetortoise except for the fact that it is not a song at all.

  • @EriktheNog I'm sorry, s/song/piece/g

    Is that better, master?

    Semantics much, master?

  • @timthetortoise Nice regexp. UNIX man?

  • @torukmakto4 No other way to go :V

  • Beautiful. This is honestly to me one of the most appealing works by philip glass. I guess the pop oriented gig got to me, yikes.

  • simply beautiful

  • Along with Milton Babbitt,Glass is probably the greatest living American composer. At his best, the repetitions are never in the least bit boring.

  • Steve Reich? saw him on last Saturday, sensational...

  • ah i'm sorry!! Keep on pressing 'remove' instead of 'reply' - sorryyy!

  • Great piece..Thanks!

  • I was looking for this masterpiece for a long time. And now that I found it and listin' to it....I am crying.....unbelievable beautiful

  • so was i since i heard it on "breathless" movie years ago...! it is beautiful and does make me want to cry??

  • this is like chopsticks in wonderland

  • lol great analogy

  • If only modern artists could make modern art beautiful, the way Glass has made modern music beautiful *sigh*

    Glass is so mesmerizing.

  • This CD is always playing in my car...so beautiful

  • This most definately is one of the most inspiring yet depressing piano pieces I've ever heard.

  • I know it was his work to make modern music more accessible, but dammit, it's not just a cd. It would be like calling any great recording a cd. It doesn't fit. This is merely a recording. This is not a cd. Album, maybe, but a cd is meaningless.

  • This entire piece is one of the great modern works of classical music. Thank you, Mr. Glass.

  • Beautiful! My brother Elvin plays this song quite well. I love this piece--soothing, lovely, enchanting. =)

  • This really is one of the best things I ever heard in my life

  • I have to say, he is my favorite modern composer

  • this is amazing. i always hear different things each time i listen and i've been listening to this for years

  • Beautiful, beautiful piece of music. Embarrassed to admit this in some ways, but I actually heard this for the first time in the film Breathless with Richard Gere. It goes so well in the particular scene when it's played.

  • that is his best cd.

  • so lovely!

  • I think this tune has just made love to me

  • Great album!

  • I was listening to this tonight and I have to say its probably my favorite Philip glass song and ranks right up there with my top 5 favorites ever.

  • This is on of the most heartbreaking things I've very heard.

  • Comment removed

  • shivers down my spine and tears in my eyes, unexplicable

  • I have the exact same feelings.

    a masterpiece by a genius.

  • I think this is my favorite Glass piece. So gorgeous and uplifting - what emotion! Thank you for posting.

  • Thanks for posting, I'm off to find my own hard copy now.

  • this music makes me think of water

  • It's the common flow of everything.

  • I like that; 'the common flow of everything' it is sadness and hope intertwined in an eternal dance.

  • Though the entire movement is constructed on a repeating 3 against 2 rhythm, the resultant polyrhythm is both hypnotic and transcendental. Bravo Philip!

  • it also has lots of spots where there are 4 on 3 pattern like things

  • I'm sorry but there aren't any 4 against 3 patterns... It's as dcrepino says, a repeated 3 against 2 pattern.

  • Exactly. 2 = left hand, 3 = right hand

  • Thanks for uploading this :]

  • <3 <3 <3

  • Beautiful!

  • i really love this... so calming :-)
