It looks so easy to play on paper, but keeping your right hand and left hand going at the right pace is proving very challenging for someone as out of practice at playing the piano as I am. I only wish I could sound half as good. It is truly one of my most favourite pieces of music, and I am a huge Philip Glass fan.
Not too ruin anyone's fun here, but this uses ideas from Schumann's music to prove that emotions can be evoked without the writer feeling them. I think it's beautiful and moving, which proves him right. It's actually very cynical. Hurrah for music degree's.
I listen to this and think to myself, who needs lyrics when we can all think and feel whatever we are thinking and feeling. This is real. So perfect. Delightful :) x

This song is the opening and the Closing parts are all of our lives..everything in

@hippopowernow It's probably Mr. Glass moving around a bit. When listening to this very closely, you can actually hear him or somebody moving around. To me, it sounds like his shirt sleeves rolling up against the piano.
The difficulty in playing it correctly comes from each hand playing different time signatures. Left hand is regular 4/4 time and right hand is in 6/8 time. While the notes are simple it is the offset time signatures that give it complexity. And beauty.
Its a very beautiful piece, I agree.. The straight 8th against the triplets put the 4/4 time creates a rich texture and illustrious sound. The score really contains no real "6/8" time. The piece could be notated that way... It's all just "4/4" time. The top register is playing triplets while the low register plays duples.
@thoroughlyThoreau I will if you agree to take an English course. Judging from what you just typed and a quick Google of your username, you could use one.
@thoroughlyThoreau It's funny that you'd be so insecure as to delete the comment with a single typo in it. And guess what? You're showing exactly why I couldn't care less about comments on Youtube. Thanks for trying though!
@thoroughlyThoreau I don't think that someone looking to one up a person in semantics on Youtube comments can really be considered one who gives legitimate criticism. A piece of music can be called a song, as it retains essentially the same meaning (though songs generally have vocals. However, the word's meaning has become very broad with more recent music).
It is indeed tonal enough that it not be recognised as a 'whole new tendency' and whatever else. Especially harmonically... it follows the many many years coming before it strictly.
But I fail to see why it is so criticised by those people call "academics". And it... might be seen as innovative in form.
Chi c'era in quel vento?
Food for thought: Minimalist music like this employs the idea that when you hear one idea repeated time and time again with only slight variations, you are able to hear it more truly, purely as a collection of sounds. The same sometimes goes for words: When you repeat a word many times out loud, it often ends up sounding strange because you are finally hearing it as a contrived combination of sounds.
@winstontheband ...yes. Like a mantra. And like mantras, they are very centering and brings forth a state of bliss. You should see his documentary "Philip Glass in 12 parts". Its a two disc set.

Quite honestly, one of the most breathtakingly beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. In a hundred years or so, there will be people who think the same as well.
Brings the emotions to the surface almost effortlessly. Mr. Glass, thank you for your music.
There is a song that is very similar to this which can be heard at the 8min21sec mark of "The F Word: Season 5: Episode 10 - 1/5", which can be searched for on youtube easily by entering the above quote.
When I'm listening to this song, it's one of those rare moments when I'm proud to be a human being. Famine, war, hatred, anger, selfishness... but we are born beautiful beings loving beautiful things. One day computers will be able to create music but they will never be able to listen to it.
Only 71,000 views. Sad so few people have felt the emotions of this piece. Haunting, sad, thoughts and memories of so many types go through my mind when I hear this. Looked for years to find this, and have spent countless hours lost in this masterpiece.

Only 71,000 views, a shame more people don't know and enjoy this music. Haunting, sad, thought provoking, memories. So much emotion in such a simple composition. Masterpiece
This is just the most beautiful piece of music. This just destroys me. The only thing I can imagine better is to include the accordian as in the film Breathless - I cannot find that anywhere though :-(
This reminds me of my old music theory class. We always laughed and had a good time. I learned to play this one in the middle of the night and I would play it in class sometimes. I learned to play Glass' Etude 2 which is basically Amazon River for piano. in class one day I taught two girls how to play a few parts of Amazon and we played it with six hand piano for fun. :) I miss class time, but I always have Glass on my mind.
Hmmm, I don't know... I like Philip Glass, but you have to admit, he's a one trick pony. This song craves a melody. Or at least some variation in the rhythm or texture. Without any of them, I'm bored after two minutes of repetition.

Beautiful, beautiful piece of music. Embarrassed to admit this in some ways, but I actually heard this for the first time in the film Breathless with Richard Gere. It goes so well in the particular scene when it's played.
Though the entire movement is constructed on a repeating 3 against 2 rhythm, the resultant polyrhythm is both hypnotic and transcendental. Bravo Philip!
