i unticked all of them and it dint make any difference! on my other comp (acer) with windows xp it did tho but on my laptop (toshiba) with windows vista it dint make any difference

In short.. get a fast SSD as a boot-up drive. =)

The main thing that causes Vista or XP machines boot slow is all the trial cr@pware that OEMs install.
I find that a fresh install of XP and even Vista boots very quickly. Now of course XP and Vista does get slower as time passes.
Best bet is to do a fresh install of XP or Vista for best performance.
Also Ubuntu is a great alternative. My Ubuntu machines boot in about 45 secs.
