hey lets forget the illuminati bullshit alright? Don't tell me about such shit. I don't believe it. It's a perverted fantasy created by moronic paranoid idiots. It's the same as believing in ghost and werewolves hahaha...
well since my grandparents were both involved in the illuminati/masonry, i think i have every right in believing the conspiracy theories are true, especially since i KNOW they are.
and regarding ghosts i'm open minded (i know people who have had past experiences with such possible supernatural entities, my mother being one of them), but werewolves? i don't think anyone believes they exist....because they quite clearly don't.
This scene is about the mannequins. Their placement, their haunting and assertive presence, the lights above them, the surreal calmness they give to the scene, the way that Leelee kind of looks like one of them at the end of the scene- add it all up, it is perfection.
If you want to understand the real meaning of the movie "Eyes Wide Shut" then you have to bear in mind that Stanley Kubrick said, "Observancy is a dying art".
2 interesting things about the scene: 1. When you see Leelee in the scene the day after, she is dressed & made up very much to look very much like her father's dolls, 2.the other characters in the scene being Russian and Japanese, represent the 2 superpower countries besides the US- as Kubrick meticulously chooses everything we see in the frame, I'm interested in why he made this decision.
@PtAltmVansanTarr Interesting observation. Millich is selling costumes - he offers disguises against reality; fantasies. The Asian (poss. Japanese?) character is in a humiliating predicament, while the American is looking for a disguise to appear of a higher status than he is. Keep in mind the movie was made across 1997-8 so it is some time after the fall of communism and the USSR. America had triumphed and was the richest and most powerful nation on Earth. I'm not sure how to interperet this.
@An0nEeMouse@An0nEeMouse I dont think it's that literal but all of Kubrick's films encourage a wide range of interpretation. Maybe to stay current with the multicultural nature of NYC. Or just using the nationalities for effect- the Russian as the sophisticated European again like the Hungarian at the beginning or the bartender in the Shining and the Japanese because the stereotype of non-dominant Asian men adds to the humiliating situation-wouldn't have played the same w/ white actors
@PtAltmVansanTarr yes thank you the key is war. and even better than that. one "belligerent" as youd call it in youre "bastardized" speak the other not or um imaginary if you so will...
and now row row row back its "just" (do it) dualism you know the jungian thing... ( ;)
two colors, two sphinxes, two "superpowers", two theatrical masks, two lionesses, eagles, everything duality... like symbology and words... both languages of their own...
I swear, Leelee Sobieski had to be one of the masked women in the secret society ritual/orgy scene. She was one. Or at least she messed around as one behind-the-scenes. ;-)
Here is Kubrick's last film and some of you find nothing better to do than share your lolita fantasies..did you miss the whole point of the film????? It is all about the link between repressed fantasies and the danger of them being acted out in reality...the final resolution of the plot charters the course to avoid the pitfalls of puritanical repression.
@turockandar you couldnt be more wrong - the movie was autobiographical - tom cruise was playing the part of kubrick - kubrick was initiated into the "elites" and their ceremonies...but what he first thought to be cool and exciting turned out to sicken and disgust him - the girl who sacrificed herself in the movie for him was also based on something similar that happened to Kubrick which is why he became a recluse... by the way the mansion is owned by the Rothschilds..
@tiarnan76 well we all see different things in good movies which is what make them great like a parable of Kafka which can be interpreted in many ways...I didn't know that the property belongs to the Rothschilds..that is a bit creepy as I have had some ties with this family recently. Thanks for the feedback:)
@qbrikc If people who have an educated vocabulary give you a complex then this is your problem..language a tool which allows people to express themselves precisely as possible with all the shades of meaning that the English language contains; almost half a million words after englobing French, German, Norse, Greek and Dutch terms to mention but these.
Great scene! And I love Millich; he's like a Russian version of The Dude if he had a bit of a silly accent. Also Leelee's smile at 1:25 and 2:09 was great.
@SupernaturalLover67 By all means you could be correct. I just went by what the article and what Leelee herself said on video. So lets just leave it at your correct and thats that. Its just a movie.
Most people aren't aware that this scene is about Zbigniew Brzezinski (hardcore high level elitist foreign policy satanist) prostituting his daughter out to Deng Xiaoping and his associates during his visit to China in the 70's. I suspected this after deciphering the symbology of the film, and I got a confirmation when I read that Mika recounts in her autobiography that she "spilled caviar" on deng's lap!

I'm not sure if the Eastern European is intentional or, if so, why. Rade Serbedzija, who plays Milich, is Serbian so the accent is natural to him and he has to my knowledge never played a character in a mainstream movie without such an accent. Serbedzija was chosen for the role because he looks a lot like the guy who designed the masks for the orgy scene. Milich sells costumes; the movie mirrors reality. It might be he was chosen for his looks and that meant him having an accent, or maybe not.
Know what he should wear? This scene is one of the untruth/dream/facade sequences (as are all the scenes with Christmas lights). Ermine was a material commonly worn by nobility. Leelee's character is telling Bill to wear Ermine because he is of a high social status. This is the dream. Bill is not of high social status, he has deceived himself into believing that to be so. When he returns to Milich's shop in the daytime (no more lights) the truth is revealed that he is just a regular bum.
@An0nEeMouse u mean this skennnnce is a Dream ?realy ?how u k now '? what otheres? , how u know what she tell him ?@TimeFearsThePyramids , wasnt this shot on 99 ?, well, 16, well, not sure, did she get implants? i dont underta why the shoper is againt her as prostitute when he then offerrs her to him ? was it just playing then ?strange movie
It's not necessarily a literal dream, though that is one interpretation. The movie is all about the fake appearance of things, the deceptive 'dream' that people veil their world in, versus the reality that few people see. At the beginning of the movie Bill has his 'eyes wide shut'. He looks but does not see. All scenes with Christmas lights or the colour red are 'veil' scenes, showing the untruth. Scenes with the colour blue are 'truth' sequences.
@An0nEeMouse I'm loving your interpretation! However, I wonder if this would have differed if Kubrick had the opportunity to fully complete the film. We can only wonder...
Throughout most of the truth and reality scenes, though, Bill refuses to open his eyes; they remain wide shut. In the mansion, it is made clear this is not his place, but he persists in trying to attend, continuing to believe himself an elite. Only at the end of the movie does Bill (and his wife) accept the reality of the world and their lives. No longer burdened with jealousy or social obsession, they commit to 'fuck', finally happy with one another.
@TimeFearsThePyramids , wasnt this shot on 99 ?, well, 16, well, not sure, did she get implants? i dont underta why the shoper is againt her as prostitute when he then offerrs her to him ? was it just playing then ?strange movie
The film was released in early 99 when Leelee was still15. However it was also the longest consecutive film shoot in history. Leelee has stated many times that she was 14 when these scenes were shot. As I said before, look it up! She's never got implants. The costume shop owner says to Cruise basically that he reconsidered when offered money. "We came to another arrangement" instead of calling the police. The film is brilliant.
@rialcnis The real best cenes were the ones WARNER BROSS CUT OUT !! Scenes where Nicole is getting brainwashed and fcke din the orgy they cut out all that scenes the movie as we saw it has absolutley no scence!! Oh and the guy in this scene was just selling his daughter ;p
@F1brawfa I think she was 16/17 when it was made but looks about 14...also when she tells Bill to get a cloak lined with ermine - this alludes to her father being part of these sex/magick rituals (or her herself)....or else how would she know he needed one? The movie is non stop with its allusions both visual and textual....and of course musically...Even taking place at "Christ Mass" the most satanic time of year celebrating the death of Christ..
At :52 I could've sworn Leelee was the sister of Helen Hunt! They're identical lol!

@jesterking1 The film was released when she was sixteen but it was shot when she was fourteen. A literary lolita inspired by Nobokov's work.

I'd say this was one of the very best scenes in the film, but then all the scenes in the film are the best.....LeeLee's smile at Bill is classic

@rialcnis Agreed, one of the best scenes of the movie. Rade Serbadzia was absolutely brilliant in this scene.
