I served onboard as an ET from 82-84 and 86-88. I remember one deployment where we had 111 continuous days at sea and we had a beer-day, 2 beer-days if I remember right. Each person could have 2 beers, but of course I managed to get more. I never saw so much beer in my life left stacked up in one place that would soon be all consumed. We worked hard to earn those few beers. It seems strange now to see people partying onboard like in this video as if it were a club.
I was forward deployed on CV-41 in Japan. She served us very well during Desert Storm! Someday, I will make the trip to walk on her flight deck again. Great ship!
@Apachahokee Your name is vaguely familiar. I probably saw you in CIC or CATTC. I was in OE Division as an ET from 82-84 and 86-88. I saw Midway as a museum in 2010 and it looked pretty much just like I remembered it. Hope you guys got a Facebook group or something online. We ET/DS/FC types have been shooting the breeze on Facebook with former shipmates from as far back as 29 years ago.
@keshasepicanimal I was 17 when I first went aboard, It seemed like we were always in the Persian Gulf or going to it. Long days, and hard work. It seems that you stood in line to do just about everything. The obligation to be there for your shipmates gave you a sense of belonging to the toughest team there was. Unless you experience the friendship's that develop from having to rely on each other 24/7 on or off the ship you will never know a truer bunch of friends. I'd go again today if I could
most countries don't even have an aircraft carrier while we just use the reitred ones for parties and friday night bingo
