I prefer the Bingley sisters to the elder Bennett sisters. They are a good laugh, you could have a good time with them on the town. The Bennet sisters are a bit of a bore!
Honestly, I think Kiera was just perfect for Elizabeth. She was just the right combination of playful and elegant. And the Darcy in the 2005 one was just flawless in looks and his portrayal of Darcy. This just feels kind of staged and unnatural to me. I don't know, maybe it's just me.
Both 1995 and 2005's Darcy make make my heart skip a beat when they speak to or look at their Elizabeth. I wish there was more men like Darcy in the world ,but they're either taken or too hard to find.
Caroline for someone who knows so well with words what makes a woman a lady "something in her air her manner of walking" you're sure unladylike they way you're shoulders are up playing cards.
all the cast of the BBC versions is perfect!!!!!!! Darcy, Elizabeth, the Bingleys, the Bennets etc but the ones i adore are the actors who played MrsBennet and Mr Collins!!!!!!
Oh.... fell in love with this movie years ago... best version ever... i see it at least once every few years... maybe I will bring it out this weekend.. yup.. i will.
I love the both versions, but I like 2005's Darcy better then Colin Firth's (not that I think he's less attractive) and mrs Bingley as well. Matthew Macfadyen played a agreeable mr Darcy that was just to reserved to let anyone know it. I have to say that the scenery is a lot better in the second version too. yet, it should've been truer to the book like this version
Já tinha lido o livro e visto o filme mais antigo, tive grandes expectativas para o filme recente, mas foi uma desilusão com a forma de contaram a história e não gostei do fim. E para mim não vai haver melhor actor a representar, Colin Firth is the epitome of Darcy, looks and all.
I think 2005's Darcy is much more, shall we say... forgivable, while Firth comes off more arrogant and unlikable. Although I think Firth's turn is truer to the book, I rather like the idea suggested by 2005's Darcy-- that Darcy was great all along, and just too reserved to let anyone see it.
Also, far too many teenagers have fallen in love with the idea of Darcy, so that casting a less-than-attractive actor (Firth) in that role is absolutely despicable.
The point is to be true to the book. I find Firth more handsome and a much more accurate portrayal of a man living in Jane Austen's time. I think accuracy is important and the 1995 version will never be beat. I liked the 2005 film as well but Firth will be my favorite Darcy forever.
A less than attractive actor? Are you kidding? Colin Firth is the epitome of Darcy, looks and all. He has a regal bearing that Hollywood actors just can't fake. I loved the book, loved all the movies, but feel wholeheartedly that the casting for the BBC version was dead on. To this day Colin Firth still makes my heart skip a beat?
I agree. I prefer all of the actors from the 2005 version over this one - even though the actors here are really good. I particularly like the 2005 Caroline over this one b/c she manages to be just as bitchy in a less overt manner - that's what you call a good actress.
I think the actors in this are way better, Kiera is OK, she's pretty but she's a bit too aware of it, I think Jenniffer is more charming and genuine, and Firth is just freaking beatiful.
I saw the 2005 movie, and I think that Matthew MacFadyen is the best looking Darcy ever. Also, Keira Knightley plays Elizabeth very well. This BBC series is good, but I prefer the movie.
Like you No1isJesus, i also have the 2005 Darcy embedded into my mind, and I did read the book after seeing the movie, so I saw all the characters from the movie as I was reading it. Seeing this BBC version afterwards (i swear i tried to watch it with an open mind) leaves me feeling cheated. It doesn't seem to have the same...aliveness or soul. And this Elizabeth seems to have no relate ability for me, as she does in the book. Also my taste in guys has me drooling over 2005 Darcy *sigh*
You're right about the 2005 movie's cast. All the actors fit their role perfectly! Especially Mr. Darcy (drool too!) and Elizabeth. I really don't understand why BBC's Elizabeth is so praised...all she ever does is smile! She looks like a porcelain doll and emanates no wittiness, let alone energy.
i disagree. I think that the Elizabeth in this series is funny, charming, and definitely a better actress then the one in the 2005 version. I think that when she smiles it emits more energy than you think...you just have to know the character more.
I think really, the films are entirely different. One's more modern, the other's not. You know what I'm saying? And that was me trying to speak smart in my other posts. XD Oh well, I can try, can't I?
Jennifer Ehle does not seem to be entirely genuine, on the contrary, I agree with Lina43 and AngloSaxonBastart, she seems rather false, and may not, although we have no description to refer to in the book, look the part of Lizzie. In contrast to the latter of my two reasons, I find Keira Knightly to look the part, but again, there does seem to be a shallowness, but prehaps of a different nature to Ehle's.
I do think, though, that I would find Colin Firth incredibly suited to the role of Mr. Darcy, had I not seen the recent film version of P&P, and therefore, had THAT Mr. Darcy stuck in my brain, and only further embedded, by, with that picture then in my mind, proceeding to read the book. :(
That is, I believe, the sound of my swoon, or, rather, of my dropping to the ground as a result of the swoon. Although I cannot be sure, because I have by now, lost all manner of consciousness.
Come to think of it, if the above is really true, why am I still typing?
Yes, l have a suggestion to AngloSaxonBastart, let's get someone witty, haughty and feisty like K Knightly, only deeper AND Colin Firth. Yes, please. All the rest are fine. We need a really silly woman as Mrs Bennet and... Less rain, more sense, right?
By the way, what's with the nickname? Is that "anglo saxon brilliant astounding start" or "anglo saxon bad awful start"?

In that case i apologise, took it skewwithed im afraid.
Cully is a very old English word in addresing someone, commonly used in the 1800s, today the equivelent is mate or pal, no insult intended to your good self. peace within these walls.
But you CAN make a joke, next time i'll get into humour mode.
She does not appear as a naive girl at all, on the contrary. In some scenes, I even find her too harsh/mean with Darcy; she conveys this "wickedness" with her eyes and the way she speaks to Firth/Darcy (which is not the case with M. Darcy). This is why I sometimes wonder if another actress would have been a better choice...
I think she is very suitable, because she playes a very strong, intelligent, young women who can handle mister Darcy, she is not some young naief girl.
Oh,but she Lizzie IS young! And NAIVE! It's early 19th Century we are talking here, not 21... Fact that a person is naive doesn't mean they can't be intelligent and strong at the same time - even more so, as one hasn't yet become weary, bitter, dissapointed and cautious.
but of course she is - why else did she believe Wickham's lies so easily and was so convinced by them? We are only so ready to believe people when we are young. And NAIVE.
That's besides the point I was making. If you refuse to acknowlegde that girls in 19th Century led a shelterd life and that young people are naive in general, that's your choice.
21 year old women in Regency times, esp. those who were not of noble blood, were hardly sheltered. And Austen depicts Elizabeth as anything but naive. You disagree, that's your choice. Want naive? Lydia Bennet, Emma and Marianne (All Austen characters) fit the bill.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Am I the only who finds the actress playing Lizzie not suitable for this character? All these little smiles, unnatural expressions, that matronly figure... No way in hell you could believe it's a 20 year old. Colin Firth is perfect, he would look brilliant with Keira Knightly, or Romola Garai for that matter. At least Keira looks more like Lizzie and her countenance is right.
I agree with you, i personally find something not right or natural about her. The expressions she pulls at her family meals when their ridiculing mr collins when they first meet him, the smirks that she has when her mother complains, so she indeed came over quite false.
Keira was better but i think maybe Kate Winslett would of been better suited.
Kate Winslet? But she's already played Marion in Sense&Sensibility. Have you seen it? Brilliant. There's Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman as well.
Back to Lizzie :) though Keira is perfect in the spirit, she lacks depth a little bit, don't you find? Well, she's young. We need someone lively and feisty but sensitive.Would you mind Romola Garai if she dyed her hair? She's a good actress. Has quite a few movies under her belt, including Dirty Dancing 2 (ok, not a stunning success, that).
She's 24 and how is her figure matronly? Just because she has curves and doesn't look like a stick? And Austen gives no description of Elizabeth, so how can Knightley look more like her? And what's wrong with smiling?
There's nothing WRONG with smiling, l just don't like the way this actress smiles while portraying a 20 year old girl who in my opinion is feisty, lively, witty, impulsive, shy, bright, alert. This actress convinces me of none of that while K Knightly does in my opinion.l just don't believe the Lizzie of the BBC drama! She looks and acts like a teacher, and her expresions infuriate me instead of being endearing! Not a convincing portrayal at all.
Ehle portrays Elizabeth's feisty, lively, witty and bright side like no other. Which is why she won a BAFTA and is regarded to be THE Elizabeth to this day. Also, Elizabeth is not shy. And certainly not the two-dimensional teenager portrayed by Knightley. A pity you can't appreciate brilliant acting when it's right in front of you.
If you call THIS a brilliant acting l wonder at your having seen any REAL acting at all! When an actor/ss is really good they convince you by their performance, make you believe them, the character becomes alive. For instance, l believe Colin Firth in his portrayal of Darcy. THAT is brilliant. I would only belive Ehle's acting if she would be playing a 35 year old primary school teacher. l just don't believe her as Elizabeth Bennet! Not the way she's portrayed by Jane Austen, anyway.
Yes, dear, I believe than an actress who has won a BAFTA for her portrayal is brilliant. She also won two Tony Awards for her stage acting. Yep. A brilliant actress. You don't like her, that is acceptable. Your rudeness however is not.
I beg your pardon? you are not actually a beacon of politeness yourself. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I don't value awards as goals in themselves. Oskar's example show that they are not nessesarily given to those who deserve an award. You seem to have a very different image of Elizabeth Bennet. Have you actually read the book?
I have read the book many times in the past 13 years and I've studied Regency for the past 10 years. The 2005 movie was inaccurate, sloppy, pseudo Bronte and utterly dumbed down. Both BBC productions put it to shame.
I actually agree with you Lina43, and i dont care about Tony awards and all the rest of it. Ehle was unsuitable for the role and this is not the first time this has been raised either, she was one of the only defects of the production.
Annoying parts were these pathetic little eye rolls, and stupid smirks that she would use at the dinner table to her father when Mr collins was present, i wasnt convinced, and she wasnt a good enough actor to pull it off.
Thank got the majority disagrees. But then, there are people who thought that Vivien Leigh was miscast as Scarlett O'Hara. "Rolls eyes* Oh, I am sorry, you don't like eye-rolling. Such a pity. May I suggest you check out Elizabeth Garvie's Elizabeth Bennet? Perhaps her rather light portrayal is more to your liking that Ehle's satirical and witty one. *Rolls eyes again*
Majority? Are you sure? "Rolls eyes" Rolling eyes is fine if its done Natuarally and catches the moment well. Ehle wasnt a good enough actress to pull it off.
Try Sally Hawkins, or even Jane Scott who played Charlotte in the 95 production, now thats how it should be done.
Elisabetta611 i wish i could my dear but the 95 production IS the best one which i do enjoy, i also love Lucy Scott as Charlotte, Anna Chancellor as Miss Bingley,(very accomplished actress) Benjamin whitrow as Mr Bennett, Crispin Carter as Bingley and a few others besides.
So you see my dear Jennifer is im afraid a very neccesery Evil.
Never mind i was wondering if your not otherwise ENGAGED you'd do me the honour of the next 2 dances? LOL!!!!
Lets be honest though, all wishing and dreaming and romance aside for a moment, in reality Darcy couldnt afford to marry anyone like lizzie. He came across like a man totally in control in every aspect of his life, and if lizzie couldnt check her tounge and attitde or have accepted the first proposol she would have had zero chance marrying well, never mind marrying anyone like Darcy. But a fun story though.
And she is so witty & beautiful, teasing him, and that is what attracts him, not the "oh, you're SO wonderful Mr Darcy" that Ms Bingley says all the time, lol!
The beauty of the story is that she is in fact NOT teasing him. "There is meanness in all the arts that women employ for captivation' - Mr. Darcy says so himself. If she feels any interest towards him, it's unconscious. She thinks she despises him for being proud, doesn't she?
Of course you're right. She's not playing him. But I think that she does enjoy teasing the great & taciturn Mr Darcy. She mocks him sometimes, just like she does Lady Catherine. And she enjoys their verbal games I think.
Plus, we all know that she was in fact attracted to him, but with his poor comment, her own pride was touched, and that's why she was prejudiced against him after that.
Yes, you are right. She enjoyed in ridiculing those she found ridiculous. And at the same time she was attracted to him. Maybe even without knowing? At least she was finding him interesting, because:
1. He was different from most of local gentlemen, being handsome, rich and a baronet.
2. He slighted her, like nobody had ever done before.
3. She admitted that his character was intricate and that she couldn't make it out.
Wow, phantomwaltz, do I EVER disagree with you. I think Jennifer Ehle put Keira Knightley (ditto for Colin Firth/Matthew MacFadyen) to shame. But viva la difference! :)
I prefer the Bingley sisters to the elder Bennett sisters. They are a good laugh, you could have a good time with them on the town. The Bennet sisters are a bit of a bore!

RabCGiblet 3 years ago
Kate Winslet? But she's already played Marion in Sense&Sensibility. Have you seen it? Brilliant. There's Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman as well.
Back to Lizzie :) though Keira is perfect in the spirit, she lacks depth a little bit, don't you find? Well, she's young. We need someone lively and feisty but sensitive.Would you mind Romola Garai if she dyed her hair? She's a good actress. Has quite a few movies under her belt, including Dirty Dancing 2 (ok, not a stunning success, that).
Lina43 3 years ago
Yes, shes certainly experienced with period dramas, so why not. Last thing i saw her in was Atonement but yes worth a go for sure.
RabCGiblet 3 years ago
She's 24 and how is her figure matronly? Just because she has curves and doesn't look like a stick? And Austen gives no description of Elizabeth, so how can Knightley look more like her? And what's wrong with smiling?
Elisabetta611 3 years ago
There's nothing WRONG with smiling, l just don't like the way this actress smiles while portraying a 20 year old girl who in my opinion is feisty, lively, witty, impulsive, shy, bright, alert. This actress convinces me of none of that while K Knightly does in my opinion.l just don't believe the Lizzie of the BBC drama! She looks and acts like a teacher, and her expresions infuriate me instead of being endearing! Not a convincing portrayal at all.
Lina43 3 years ago
Ehle portrays Elizabeth's feisty, lively, witty and bright side like no other. Which is why she won a BAFTA and is regarded to be THE Elizabeth to this day. Also, Elizabeth is not shy. And certainly not the two-dimensional teenager portrayed by Knightley. A pity you can't appreciate brilliant acting when it's right in front of you.
Elisabetta611 3 years ago
If you call THIS a brilliant acting l wonder at your having seen any REAL acting at all! When an actor/ss is really good they convince you by their performance, make you believe them, the character becomes alive. For instance, l believe Colin Firth in his portrayal of Darcy. THAT is brilliant. I would only belive Ehle's acting if she would be playing a 35 year old primary school teacher. l just don't believe her as Elizabeth Bennet! Not the way she's portrayed by Jane Austen, anyway.
Lina43 3 years ago
Yes, dear, I believe than an actress who has won a BAFTA for her portrayal is brilliant. She also won two Tony Awards for her stage acting. Yep. A brilliant actress. You don't like her, that is acceptable. Your rudeness however is not.
Elisabetta611 3 years ago
I beg your pardon? you are not actually a beacon of politeness yourself. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I don't value awards as goals in themselves. Oskar's example show that they are not nessesarily given to those who deserve an award. You seem to have a very different image of Elizabeth Bennet. Have you actually read the book?
Lina43 3 years ago
I have read the book many times in the past 13 years and I've studied Regency for the past 10 years. The 2005 movie was inaccurate, sloppy, pseudo Bronte and utterly dumbed down. Both BBC productions put it to shame.
Elisabetta611 3 years ago
I actually agree with you Lina43, and i dont care about Tony awards and all the rest of it. Ehle was unsuitable for the role and this is not the first time this has been raised either, she was one of the only defects of the production.
Annoying parts were these pathetic little eye rolls, and stupid smirks that she would use at the dinner table to her father when Mr collins was present, i wasnt convinced, and she wasnt a good enough actor to pull it off.
Although keira wasnt much better it is a

Thank you, AngloSaxonBastart! I bow and rest my case.
Lina43 3 years ago
Thank got the majority disagrees. But then, there are people who thought that Vivien Leigh was miscast as Scarlett O'Hara. "Rolls eyes* Oh, I am sorry, you don't like eye-rolling. Such a pity. May I suggest you check out Elizabeth Garvie's Elizabeth Bennet? Perhaps her rather light portrayal is more to your liking that Ehle's satirical and witty one. *Rolls eyes again*
Elisabetta611 3 years ago
AngloSaxonBastart 3 years ago
Yes, I am sure, dear. Word of advice: If you do not like Jennifer Ehle, stop watching her.
Elisabetta611 3 years ago 2
Elisabetta611 i wish i could my dear but the 95 production IS the best one which i do enjoy, i also love Lucy Scott as Charlotte, Anna Chancellor as Miss Bingley,(very accomplished actress) Benjamin whitrow as Mr Bennett, Crispin Carter as Bingley and a few others besides.
So you see my dear Jennifer is im afraid a very neccesery Evil.
Never mind i was wondering if your not otherwise ENGAGED you'd do me the honour of the next 2 dances? LOL!!!!
It is true though, any savage can dance.
AngloSaxonBastart 3 years ago
Odd, I always preferred the Charlotte AND the Miss Bingley from the 1980 version. Oh well, that's the joy of differing opinions.^^
Oh, and I can't dance, I wonder what that makes me, LOL. ;-)
Elisabetta611 3 years ago
NOT! a savage then. LOL.

RabCGiblet 3 years ago
Oh my.. that look he gives her!!! *shiver*
And she is so witty & beautiful, teasing him, and that is what attracts him, not the "oh, you're SO wonderful Mr Darcy" that Ms Bingley says all the time, lol!
Liz86000 3 years ago 5
HELL YES
reneen1018 3 years ago
The beauty of the story is that she is in fact NOT teasing him. "There is meanness in all the arts that women employ for captivation' - Mr. Darcy says so himself. If she feels any interest towards him, it's unconscious. She thinks she despises him for being proud, doesn't she?
dAvrilthebear 3 years ago
Of course you're right. She's not playing him. But I think that she does enjoy teasing the great & taciturn Mr Darcy. She mocks him sometimes, just like she does Lady Catherine. And she enjoys their verbal games I think.
Plus, we all know that she was in fact attracted to him, but with his poor comment, her own pride was touched, and that's why she was prejudiced against him after that.
Liz86000 3 years ago
Yes, you are right. She enjoyed in ridiculing those she found ridiculous. And at the same time she was attracted to him. Maybe even without knowing? At least she was finding him interesting, because:
1. He was different from most of local gentlemen, being handsome, rich and a baronet.
2. He slighted her, like nobody had ever done before.
3. She admitted that his character was intricate and that she couldn't make it out.
dAvrilthebear 3 years ago
He's not a baronet... His uncle is Lord Matlock, but he is just Mr Darcy.
Liz86000 3 years ago
Oops, slip of a tongue! ))

LOL! No biggie!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Wow, she really is not the Elizabeth Bennet I imagined. Where are the fine beautiful eyes.. the playful, teasing manner.. the light figure.. ?
Keira Knightley IS Elizabeth Bennet.
phantomwaltz 3 years ago
Wow, phantomwaltz, do I EVER disagree with you. I think Jennifer Ehle put Keira Knightley (ditto for Colin Firth/Matthew MacFadyen) to shame. But viva la difference! :)

my thoughts exactly!!!!!!!!!!

No! She looks more natural.

The older Bingley sister is so accomplished that she is still unmarried and hangs around her sister and brother all the time.
