Anyone who gets a Blackbelt in less than 4 years is obviously a "karate" or Taekwondo McDojo practioneer!
Guys in Brazilian jiu Jitsu don't get blackbelts until they've trained for at least 6-10 years continuously. Heck in Brazilian jiu Jitsu you usually stay a whitebelt for YEARS! You earn you're belt in real styles...
"While most people need a decade or more to become a black belt, Penn had, with only three years of training, not only received a black belt but defeated people who had been training their entire lives on his way to winning the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship."
BJ Penn was a freak..he was taking 2-4 classes EVERY day.
He put in as many mat hours in 3 and a Half years as most people do in 7-8 years! So he did his time, believe me...lol Most people leave that part out...
So unless you're training FULL TIME and are gifted don't expect to do what Penn did, because he's one of the few...
As far as you're friend getting his is 3 years probably only training a few times a week...you probably should look at the quality..lol *McDojo**
I don't have a problem backing up any comments. I've been training and competing for right at 17 years...how long have you been training?
If they trained for 2-3 times per day CONSISTENTLY EVERYDAY like Penn then yea..they deserve their belt if they are talented..but if they only train for 2-3 times per WEEK and get a blackbelt in 3 years then something is wrong...
Anyway..when did they start giving belts for MMA?!?! LMAO!!!
@RobbieH02879 id rather a black belt in mma than karate or some other shite.Obviously theyre just capitalising on mma popularity since mma is aset of rules, not a style per se.Very few arts equate the black belt with mastery like bjj,in most its supposed to just represent competence, the reality is rather differnet from what ive seen in 25 years around the arts.
I agree even though they are in different weight classes for MMA I would love to see Lyman Good and Roger Gracie or hell even Ryron Gracie just go out full blow ADCC submission wrestling trust me Roger or Ryron would wreck school on Lyman Good with Submission Wrestling and with the Gi no Contest.. If you train in Submission Wrestling why doesnt the school compete in ADCC or Pan AMS ???
I definitely wanna see Ryron and Roger Compete more, especially Ryron. That dude is a terror, good size AND technique. Ryron is supposed to be making a good run at MMA, with his solid Jiu Jitsu and the fact he wrestled in HS he should do very well. It's time for the Gracie boys to show peopel what's up now that MMA is beginning to get watered down due to the rules and all the "jack of all, master of none" types now
And I agree, Lyman would be mauled by Roger or Ryron, even Ralek would stomp him.
@RobbieH02879 youll never see ryron in mma,hes already stated publically he has no interest and its unlikely hell ever compete again in grappling due the conflict in philosophy. He wouldnt be elite level anyway due to terrible striking, youll never see another pure grappler reach that level.I used to love watch ryron compete ,so technical,he could have been roger had he been with a competitive team ,for sure.
that leg sweep is sweet im gonna try it next time in class haha

Really that's weird because my friend got his black belt in 3 years and he does TSMMA

That says something about the qualifications needed for it.

Except the people that get it in three years are also taking 2 to 3 classes per day everyday as well.
Why dont you fight the guy in the video if you're so sure on the lack of quality then, im sure he got his belt in about 3 yrs too

20 years
And the reason they give belts is because the style started as a Kyokushin offshoot in 84'
In 93' they incorporated MMA into their program
