  • .... senza parole

  • I know that Jaco have had a couple of Morch basses, and this certainly looks like a Morch bass to me, but I am not 100% sure.

  • @ACnolleDC I thought it was a Morch bass (Denmark).

  • What is that....?? music.?

  • amazing bassist of all the time

  • A great musician with serious psichiatric problems...we all miss you. R.I.P

  • The best way I can describe Jaco is Coltrane and Hendrix had a bass-playing baby.

  • Beautiful! :D

  • continuum is by far his greatest composition

  • @unclejunglebass john and mary !

  • This is so over...

  • That is pure musical genius, don't even think of comparing it to anything else.................

  • whats the other bass hes using

  • @Bassmastasnake33 Morch bass

  • omg i want this bass ='(

  • Look The Bass Cutaway...Beautiful

  • @ACnolleDC it's actually an abe rivera bass. not carl thompson.

  • @ACnolleDC thanks

  • jaco's playing was just so beautiful. anyone know what kind of bass he was using? the one that is not his usual fender jazz bass?

  • Jaco was the best period!

  • the dislike button needs to be disabled

  • Why? Why? Why?

  • The incredible thing is that Jaco was "limited" to what he was doing somewhat. It eventually became his style . A jealous schoolmate broke his right hand during football. In this video he mentions that and he later admits he really is only using two fingers. I can only imagine what other techniques he would have developed had he had the chance. Who also knows how much more music he had in him had he not been taken from us so soon.

  • @m0nNikneim que boludo que sos por favor, comprate un bajo mas grande

  • Comment removed

  • @Pastorius333 Its good, but i like jacos late 60s early 70s stuff more

  • Every time I hear him play I just feel real GOOD.

  • @nat00ben06 Every time I hear Jaco play, I feel bad. Bad because no matter how much I practice, I'll never be that good...

  • Jaco is the Bass-t !

  • hate to say it but some of this video sounds like a "Shreds"

  • @63b1888 well the first like 3 minutes was naima, and then he goes in to comtinuum and in between those he quotes small bits of classic tunes with laying a solo in between them.

  • @63b1888 That's cause he's shredding, A.K.A. improvising "music".

  • The abe riviera sounds so warm, like as close as you can come to an upright using an electric.

  • Jaco sounds better on the Fretted Fender.

  • got technical or what!

  • enough of that crappy fast pentatonic slapping shit like flea. this is real music on bass.

jaco its one of the few who can actually make this instrument sing.

  • @xB4SsXb0yx Can you not praise someone without putting someone else down? Flea is a fine musician who does more than slap, and he likes Jaco at least as much as you.

  • What exactly do they mean by the title "Modern Bass Guitar"? The bass guitar has been around since the 1950s. What's modern about it?

  • @Seattlecarnut Its all about the technique. Some intervals which were considered as dissonance before and microtone diference are used. Theres more to it, such as the usage of modal improvisation. Try to do some research about it. =]

  • @caspg Ah. Ok.

  • @Seattlecarnut Modern as in the new form of playing, in oppose to the old walking bass lines that were the standard by the jazz community, so when Jaco opened up his thing, and everyone heard, everyone took a brand new look at the bass.

  • @ianonfire Ah! Ok.

  • GENIO

  • i can´t belive, nothing of morden music could be posible , if it doesn´t exit

  • what bass is that he is playing

  • @ThePaulwatson thats a carl thompson. same brand les claypool plays

  • @jjoyner000 ,

that is an abe Rivera bass that Jaco borrowed from Jerry Jemmot. Not aCarl Thompson

  • @jjoyner000 It's an Abe Riviera, I own a Carl, and I know his instruments, and this is definetly not a CT. This bass was used also in the video by the other musician, Jerry Jemmott. It is his bass.

  • i wish i understood more theory to understand better how some of his playing works. i can enjoy listening to it, but couldn't knowingly write something like this even if i had the technique, which is frustrating

  • Timeless!

  • I kinda wish he woulda had that boutique bass all along. Sounds so rich..but clean. Maybe it's the ebony. What the hey I'm thankful either way. My bass teacher told me none of this is just noodling. He's got the melody going in his head the whole time I was told.

  • @SquierClassicVibe35 you can hear the melody in some of that 'noodling'. Of continuum that is

  • what is the bass that pastorius is using that looks a bit like an upright bass. im not talking about his jazz bass

  • this bass is horrible, but Jaco is always Jaco ...

  • @jazzz65 it's beautiful. what a tone

  • JACO + Naima best to best

  • A much darker spin on Naima... I love it.

  • Every note he plays is so carefully played, so expressive, his technicque is perfect, and his playing is beautiful! Jaco R.I.P.

  • Genium

  • Honestly, at first I didn't really care for Jaco much, but he has grown on me and I now I can really appreciate his genius

  • i see where he is going. i want to go there too.

  • Forever in love with Jaco!

    Perfect... Just, perfect!

  • What i think people need to realize that there can never be a greatest bass player ever, there are people who changed both upright (Ray Brown, Charles Mingus, Larry Gales, Domenico Dragonetti , ect.) as well as the electric (Jaco, James Jamerson, Larry Grahm, Victor wooten, Stanley Clark, Marcus Miller, John Entwistle, ect.) They all Did something new with the bass, and we'll continue to see people change the bass and all other instruments till the end of time, so there never will be a greatest.

  • Great point man! Although I still think certain players had a greater and more far reaching influence on the bass than others. But well said

  • @Mavodo23 agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Mavodo23 well put!

  • Don't forget Cleveland Eaton.

  • @jdub24bro

    and dave holland

  • @Mavodo23 so what about les claypool? and flea? maybe they're not jaco but they are great

  • @TheStringSlave They are great, dont get me wrong. I love both Primus and the Chilis. I wasnt trying to leave them out, thats why i abreviated et cetera (i know know that its etc. and not ect like i had posted.) its just theres so many bassists to name and so little comment characters. If i had more room id include both them, Eric Avery, Norwood Fisher (fishbone), Cleveland Eaton, and so many other people. Just didnt have enough room to include everyone i wanted to, thats all.

  • @Mavodo23

THANK U!! this is just what i have been trying very badly to say.

  • @Mavodo23 Jaco revolutionised so much, if not everything. The melodies, harmonies, rhythm, sounds and technique, with amazing honest and direct feeling. He was devastatingly emotional, elegant and yet raw and powerful.

I agree that there can't really be a "number one", but you can't deny peoples opinion. If someone says "he is the greatest", of course they mean it in their personal opinion. That is my opinion also.. (with Michael Manring carrying the torch). Einstein of bass, bad boy of jazz!

  • @aakkoin yeah man! Michael Manring is the No.1 !! :-D

pieces like "Selene" are just unmatched in the world of bass... I enjoy all of the grandmasters of bass though.

especially Jaco was just highly entertaining on top of his incredible skill ;)

  • @Mavodo23 jaco is the greatest

  • thanks Mavodo

  • what kind of bass guitar is this?

  • @cupulajkin A fender and an Abe Rivera.

  • This Is Beautiful Art ; Thats What It Truly Is

  • @MUSICRTW

I really enjoy the Autism displayed in Jaco. Too bad he is long gone. He was definetly the most Autistic bassist that ever lived. R.I.P. Autistic Jaco.

  • why are people saying he was past his prime musically

just because his life was known to be fucked up at the time

this is PERFECT rendition of clasic

  • yeah, but that's because his manager actually hired someone to make sure he didn't come into contact with any alcohol before or during the video

  • I shed a tear for Jaco. RIP.

  • what a genius, even he had his best days behind, you can hear it in every single note. this bass sounds wonderful, a little warmer than the fender he used to play. thanks for posting this beautiful peace of music history *****

  • man poor guy. he s struggling. at this point of his life. he was in pretty bad shape. after this recording, the next day he stormed in the office and demanded for his money.

  • That's one very pretty bass.

  • Its for vibrato... the sound is more subtle on a fretless, that Jaco preferred so the sound you're listening for is less distinct as opposed to a fretted bass. But essentially the "rubbing" as you call it is for vibrato.

  • i wonder what it would be like if he were alive! he is amazing

  • This is cool. I have never seen the MEB video in its entirety. It's great to see him play but this sadly not the same Jaco that recorded Donna Lee. His fluidity is gone. Must have been a while since he had last played regularly. You can tell that a lot of the goods are still there, but the technique and clarity of thought is not quite there. Got to say, though, he sounds better here than on some of the early eighties recordings. Thanks for the post. RIP JACO.

  • Thanks

  • what kind of bass is he using

  • he has a fender jazz (62 i think) it was his friends he was borrowing. neck was in repair, so he put on a 70's precision neck on it. and for the fretless, he is using jerry jemmots. which is very arguable what it is. Looks like an Abe Riviera. Good luck finding one of those.

  • That is an Abe Rivera and he only made a few basses like that. That one belongs to Jerry Jemmott

  • yea i know that

look at the fucking comment i posted.

  • ianonfire,

You made a good comment.Sorry that I did not see it before I posted my answer. But you dont need to reply so harshly.Have a little more respect. We agree with the answers we gave. Glad that you know about his basses. So dont curse anyone out.

  • dont patronize me,

i dont know how that wouldve disrespected you,

but o.k, i am glad you have aknowledged the remark. Im sure one swear word wont kill anyone.

    lighten up.

  • the jazz bass was borrowed from jeff andrews for the video shoot.

  • No, that is Jaco's. The fretted J neck was in for repairs and he installed a P-bass neck in the interim.

  • sorry dude you are wrong it was for sure Jeff Andrews bass.. I dont know where you are getting your info from but Iknow for sure it was Jeffs for sure, Jaco did not own a bass at this time of the video shoot.

  • you are correct about the neck.. but im tellin ya its Jeffs`bass..

  • Your both right as there are two basses in this video.

  • AMAZING JACO IS THE BEST

  • #t=8m29s :D okay what?

  • My top tree favorit bassists is Jaco pastorius, Jack Cassidy( Jefferson airplain, Hot tuna) and John Entwistle(The who) These tree are the best in my opinion.

  • is this improvised?

  • I would imagine so, the melodies aren't, but the rest of the crazy moolah is!

  • can anybody tell me why bassists rub their strings eg 1:01?

does that not just mute them, i've tried this on my own bass & well i aint too sure for what im meant to be hearing but it doesnt sound right when i do it

  • not entirely. the first tune is Naima by john coltrane, and the second one is Continuum off of Jaco's debut solo album, but he does improvise over the forms of the tunes after he plays the head.

  • What bass is that?

  • ohhh damn

  • hey does anyone know why it is that when ya play natural harmonics on the 4th and 9th frets that theyre slightly flat? ive always wondered but could never find a proper explanation

  • I don't know about best but he is certainly unique and one of a kind.

  • the best bassist........

  • WHAT, son - WHAT?

    Jaco, RIP

  • That's an unfortunate sweater.

  • it's fortunate enough to be wrapped around jaco and rubbed up against his bass! XD

  • It's pretty special.. hahaha.

  • it's an unfortunate jaco. the sweater is lucky to be in such a good video

  • wow. that seriously bad ass.

  • jaco = bad ass

    bad + ass = bass

    jaco = bass

  • @m0nNickneim lol your logic is undeniable XD

  • @m0nNickneim thats JACO MATHTASTIC!!!!!

  • the scroll... surely its a carl thompson? makes basses for les claypool and stanley clarke as well.

  • what? in the video? that's jaco man...

  • Yeah man.. Why did I say that? lol

    I know this is Jaco.

Ooh yesterday I was watching Jaco and Stanley Clarke vids, must've mixed it up. lol.

  • I'm pretty sure Stanley Clarke is black...? lol

  • I Know! lol

  • Lol

  • precision neck/jazz body...other vid- is that a Fodera any 1???

  • No, the fretless belonged to Jerry Jemmott, and he later had it refretted. I think at this point, the Bass of Doom was being repaired by Kaufman.

  • Was that fretless the Bass Of Doom's replacement after it was stolen?

  • No Jaco used two different necks on the Doom

  • Jerry's Bass. Does anyone the theme/reference to the wizard of oz?....If I only had a brain!!!

  • same luthier than les claypool?

  • Its actually an Abe Rivera bass.

  • great jaco

  • is that a carl thompson bass?

  • is a morch bass

  • thanks! looks german?..

  • mmm no.. theyare from denmark! :D

  • carl thompson fuck yeah

  • Number 1, number 5, number 666...

who cares!!! just listen the music

and have respect for a dead man, and ask yourself "¿who loves you..?"

(i see a looooot of people all over the world that loves Jaco).

  • I'm with you there, there is no greatest bass player of all time, it's a very personal thihg. It's not something that peope should argue over! I can't stand most rock bassists that probably rated higher than Jaco, but Jaco is number 1 on my list. I'll have to start deleting comments if it continues!

  • Actually there's not much to say. That ranking (Guitar Magazine) is simply ridiculous. So, nobody is offend anyone, because we talk about absolute nothing. I do not see how someone could or should be offended.

    Cheers,

    Demetrio

  • nice guitar design

  • This is the best piece of bass work I ever heard and love the custom fretless!

  • Dude, The Ox played in an entirely differant style, you can't compare them. If you were a Jaco fan then you would appreciate this vid, but you're not so that's cool.

  • This was recorded when Jaco was a complete mess...not at his prime.

  • Why do you go around hating on jaco. ive seen your hateful comments under like every jaco video. Just go listen to your entwistle and watch your fox news.

  • not hateful to mention who won BASSIST OF THE MILLENIUM. It appears many of the Jaco heads are the ones filled with hate such as yourself telling me to watch FOX, which I am right now! cheers

  • guess other professional musicians and bass players are "talentless hacks", how arrogant of you.

  • Not at all but in my eyes theres a good few of them who are.

  • How about ryan martinie of Mudvayne

  • martinies a god

  • mudvayne jajajaja

  • Was Jaco not named "The Greatest Bass Player Who Has Ever Lived" by Bass Guitar Magazine?

  • Jaco was rated number 5 by other professional bass players and musicians. Entwistle was number 1 in Bass Player Magazine and BASSIST OF THE MILLENIUM IN GUITAR MAG cheers

  • The same poll that rated Paul McCartney at number 2?

  • good charlotte is more popular than weather report does that mean they are more talented

  • Of course, sheer popularity is the only proper measure of talent in the entertainment industry, why do you think Michael Jackson is so great? Or Kenny G? lol

  • which year is this, please?

  • 1985.

  • thanks! this is amazing I was just caught by 2:55- 3:00...and the rest of course! :)

  • Jaco was a standard that was set so high, that even with the electronic wizardry of today's bass world, you are still left in awe of his absolute artistry with the instrument.

He was a true light, and he will always be seen as such.

His like will probably never be seen again, but he did what God sent him here to do, and we are better for it.

    R.I.P.,Jaco, you certainly earned it.

  • this dude was the truth...hell, he still is!!!!

  • Bearing in mind that this was Jaco at lowest point of his life, it shows just how incredibly musical he was. He is still " The Emperor of the Bass " and his influence will continue on for many years to come.

  • no doubt. he was born to play the bass...

  • 7:05-8:39

where the fuck do you get the ability to fingerpick like that

  • just practice the endurance and you'll get more speed at the end

  • i think that bass is the other guys bass that is interviewing jaco , or like the guy jaco is working with in this vid.

  • i dont like jaco's fretless tone is this video, where is his signature fretless bass??

  • stunning love it so much

  • this was some incredible improvisation
