I've been listening to SRO, DD & TDS a lot lately. It struck me how important Jason really was to the band. Look at his contributions. On DD he had the title track & Outfit. On TDS he really hit his stride with John Henry, Danko/Manuel, Never Gonna Change & GD Lonely Love, all great. On ABAAC he had Easy on Yourself & Daylight, not his best work IMO but very good songs in the context of the album. I still love DBT, buy everything they publish & will always see their shows but I do miss Jason.
I've seen twice with Isbell (prob around '04 or '05) and once without this past April. They still put on a hell of a good show and sound incredible, but I miss getting to hear Decoration Day and Goddamn Lonely Love in between Hell No I Aint Happy and Women and Whiskey.
I started listening to DBT right after SRO came out and I've been lucky enough to see them several times with Jason and without him. To me, losing Jason took a huge toll on the band. He wasn't the most prolific songwriter but his contributions were always strong. Even without him they're one of the top bands around, just different. I still love me some DBT but damn!!!
What would DBT be like now if Jason had stayed? MEAN AND STRONG...
@Madigan101st Not sure - his songwriting was definitely from a different place. He was their best guitar player, but I think John Neff's expanded role has made up for it. For me, the more Patterson and Cooley songs, the better...but then again, "Outfit" and "Decoration Day" are 2 of my favorite Truckers songs.

I'm kind of glad they parted ways. You are right they would have gone through the ROOF as a trio. I think they made each other better.
If they made it too big then they would all turn into dicks and we couldn't have great small venu concerts that make them so good.

@home2houston I'm inclined to agree with you. Haven't seen them without Jason yet (will do later this year) but it's a shame how things turned out.

fucking amazing.
i'll always love DBT, but with Jason (the lead singer in this vid) in the band there really wasn't a band on earth that could touch them live.

Wow! This ranks up there with Neil Young's Free World rendition on SNL... electric! You don't see this on TV every day.
