my friend used to compare them unfavorably to weather report. as for instrumental skill, innovation or composition complexity i honestly have no idea how to "judge" their input (assuming i really had to "judge"). maybe miles would have anything to say about that. he knows.
but anyway, to me, zawinul and the guys formed quite a tinny sort of band. and there is oh so much woody quality to the mahavishnu orchestra!
Birds of Fire and the Mahavishnu Orchestra was an epiphany for me at age fourteen, when the LP first came out. Listening to Led Zep, Deep Purple at the time, when I saw McLaughlin and MO play outdoors at Wolman Rink in Central Park (NYC) that summer I knew from then on I was forever spoiled and would never be quite like the rest of my friends.
@logochrysalis I'm with you 100%! Nearly identical testimony too. My friends came with me to hear them in D.C. but they never listened at home. I sure did. It was so intriguing, so technically & artistically innovative, I had to hear it again and again until memorized. A funny moment: when John requested a minute of silence, 10 seconds into it a guy yelled "times up!"

Beautiful piece. Once you've had a taste of the superior, to return to the inferior is unthinkable. Clearly the zenith of fusion.

Mclaughlin had philosophy and spirituality of highest level and he is the leader of guitar in the world. Better even than Hendrix.

Mclaughlin, Cobham, Hammer, Laird and Goodman... The greatest collection of musicians to ever form a group.

This makes Zeppelin look like they came out of a cracker jack box.

His statement of the melody is just breathtakingly gorgeous. His ability to vary his picking dynamics at that speed are really extraordinary.
