My mother taught from 1923-1970--her generation would never have had this problem. Teachers such as Leta Spearman, Mrs. James Leo Garrett, E. E. Mahundro, Lucille Kendrick Powell, Doris Goodrich Jones, Mattie Bess Coffield, Merele Eggebrecth, Lyle Skinner were leagues in stature above today's teachers. They knew who was in control, you knew who was in control--and it was not you. They walked into a classroom and order was instant due to their bearing and authority.  They never had to beg.

In my mother's generation of teachers (1923-1970), most of the teachers came from the highest achievers in their college classes. The lowest achievers seek out "teaching" today--very little emphasis on three "R's", big on diversity, multi-culti, sex ed, PC, et al

Sadly... those above posts are mostly correct. I am now in my third year of college and you can see a huge difference looking back to high school of how most high school teachers don't like kids or want them to succeed. The teachers who are always in a bad mood and let a few bad apples get to them really shouldn't be teaching. Parents would be quite surprised at the behavior of SOME teachers. There should be cameras in every classroom just to show how much teachers care or don't care about kids.
