There are a lot of reptile haters because they aren't "fluffy" like a rabbit. I know both species, and I can honestly say, you'll get more genuine affection out of that water monitor or a tegu than you'll get out of a rabbit.

@TheBoaConstrictor95 the monitor has a very varied diet, it eats shelfish, fish, eggs small mammals and each one is very fussy it probably wont eat its food dead although most monitors eat carrion anyway. roadkill is the best for monitors

@kingofmacedon13 In the wild species of savannah monitors do, in fact, eat rodents. Obviously, for a large reptile with teeth and strong jaws any small animal is ideal.
A whole rabbit may not be the standard method of feeding in captivity, really because it clearly gets people's dander up, but monitor lizards are carnivores that benefit from moderated meat in their diet. Plus, this could also count towards predatory enrichment for the lizard, too.

@The119manish It's not nature when you throw the animal to its death. In nature the prey has just as much chance of getting away as the predator has of killing it. In a cage there is nowhere for the prey to go and therefore the predator has an unfair advantage which is against nature. Get your facts correct next time and have a nice day.

In case you haven't noticed, when a snake in the wild hunts the rabbit has a chance to run away before the snake catches it. In this case the rabbit cannot. If it runs it has nowhere to get away and the snake will eventually catch it. There is an imbalance here. Predators are equiped to kill prey, prey is equiped to run from predators. You take away the prey's ability to run away and you lose it beings natural.

Whatever amount of chicken was not used for fried chicken would be used for regular chicken so itd be about the same. I also agree that we should not kill for taste such as with veal and lamb. Most people eat 2 day old animals just for taste which i believe is wrong and do not participate in.
