  • you are missing the metal vacuum tube. it is designed so that condensation does not get into the vacuum canister

  • 98 vw golf gl distributor replace is it easy for diy

  • @hp11208 I'm sorry, what are you asking?

  • I am having the same problem.... Did you ever get it figured out?

  • @bigrich424

My bad just found the silly next button for the comments.... I'll check for carbon tomorrow.... Thanks again...

  • Again folks, I have fixed this. It WAS the port on the side of the carb. I cleaned out the carbon cake and it advances properly.

  • If you get a chance, maybe make a vid, and point out what port you're talking about specifically. Just so we can get a visual.

  • Can't. Motor's not in the car anymore. Proper advance will be seen on the timing light. When the motor is revved, the light will climb clockwise on the pulley.

  • so i guess your vacuum canister isn't working right. you can buy new vacuum canisters.

  • This is a top video. I Like how you explain the problem. Also it gives good insight on how timing should be set at idle and full advance. I run a 009 dizzy in my beetle where I do have to keep idle and full advance in regular check. I,m going to be converting it to electronic ignition soon. I'll keep you posted.

  • The only thing I would try and not sure if you have, take the cap off and find the notch on the base, rotate the pulley to TDC and line the rotor and the notch up. Back the pulley up to your 7 mark, then move your dist. base to line up again with rotor. Being that I only run mech adv, I have not had much dealings with the vac adv. but something I would try

  • Can anyone post a How to service and clean a vw 1300 Carby? i'm at a loss

  • the hose on mine is hooked in the front..and it runs fine but idk i think its supposed to be on the side

  • Glad you found the carbon deposits. I solved mine by putting in a centrifical advance .009 point version in. As basic as you can get. It runs great now. No vacuum lines, no vacuum leaks. LOL

  • where does the black pipe from the vacuum disk (oval) go to??

  • to the carb

  • man you are very talent huh!!!!!

  • Thought I would let you know that I fixed this. The port on the side of the carb was almost completely blocked with carbon deposits. I cleaned it out with a tiny file and it works perfectly now. And yes, the hose was hooked up to the side of the carb.

  • aahh crud in the carb, no matter where it is its a ton of fun right?!

  • so what if u have a 009 and it dont need a vacum hose..do i supposed to put a vacum line somewhere on the carb.? or what?:

  • Where the vacume hose plugs into carb all you do is plug and seal. I use a small length of hose say 2 inches long and seal with a self tapping screw.

  • ohh ok so i basicly should keep all the places on the carb. blocked off then right? should have about 3 places blocked off?

  • It depends on what kind of carb you have. Mine is a PICT 30/31 it has 3 plugs seals at the front plugged. This how it came out of the box new. The one on the left hand side behind the throttle return spring is the one I had to plug myself because the 009 dizzy does not have the vacume canister on it. I found this out on Rob and Daves Air Cooled Pages (Google This Site) Lots of Air Cooled Information and detailed diagrams. This is where i have learnt a lot as I,m only a Hobbiest on cars.

  • oh mine is the same as urs lol

  • It might help if you showed where the other end of the vacuum hose is attached. I'd go with Mtiong on the misplaced vacuum hose. With the way the engine idles smoothly, it's kinda unlikely to be a stuck choke plate, but I'd be doing my troubleshooting with an open carb if I were you. About the only reasons I could think of for vacuum to be present at idle is a misplaced hose or a stuck choke plate.

  • yes u should have 0 hg, be sure that you are using the ported vacuum at the side of the carb, NOT the manifold vacuum below the base of the carb flange. throttle plates should be fully closed, and no touching between the stepped choke plate and the choke adjusted that most people use as an idle adj. good luck

  • Also, I failed to mention that if this is an newer 1600, make sure you are running with the carburetor that is matched to the engine. Check the manuals for the correct application. Good luck.

  • If the throttle plate were too far open, wouldn't it run higher than 900rpm? That's where my idle is at right now. Also, I don't know the displacement. Only that it is a 1500 case. It could be a 1600, but I'm not sure.

  • This motor runs great, but I would recommend to retune the carburetor. That is why it is giving extra vacuum at idle because the throttle plate is slightly open causing this.
