It can't digest them well and can potentially kill them if they eat too much. Now... if the states biggest industry was "rabbit" ranching... that would be a whole different story. But NOT crops.

Oh Forgive me for for seeming like i don't like dogs or cats cause i have both, BUT. You got a better chance of a dog or a cat going feral then you do a ferret. Does that mean we should get remove them from homes? What would you tell your kids? "Well sorry Timmy, but lassie might just get out and go feral. We can't have her killing ducks now can we. No lets leave that to the hillbilly hicks." Ferrets couldn't last a day on there own in the wild.

unfortunately ferrets are also illegal in queensland, australia, where i plan to move shortly 'sans ferret' aka without my best little friends - who are, like most ferrets, desexed and pose no threat to anything - except maybe a bowl of kangaroo meat
i have NEVER seen a ferret chase a roo though,don't like it's chances of catching anything - except maybe a cane toad, which would be fatal

as far as i know the 'feral ferrets' in New Zealand are cross-breeds - 1/2 ferret 1/2 polecat, as the domestic ferrets that were dumped there with the hope of controlling the rabbits problem (she swallowed a spider to catch a fly)were not suitable for the job of establishing colonies in the wild

Cats can be easily socialized with ferrets. The reason there's no feral ferrets is because they're fearless... to the point of foolishness and gets killed by checking out a rolling car, a huge dog, a redneck, etc.

A. are there feral populations of ferets in California? and B. do ferets pose a serios threa to native wildlife? if A&B=true clamp down on current illegal pets, control wild population, if A=true & B=false change the law, legalise pet ferets. if A=false do ALOT of research into what the likely reality of B is.

I have 4 ferrets, and they are the greatest pets - they're hilarious, sweet, and soooo loveable. I've never known a ferret owner who didn't LOVE ferrets, and I've kown quite a few! That should say a lot, considering how many people are not so adoring of the more common house pets (unfortunate, but true...) Oh, how great it would be to be able to take my little guys to a park, or the beach... but, alas, they're 'convicts'...*sniff*...

have been here just as long as that study and there were NO reports of feral ferrets ANYWHERE in California! Gerbils and other small rodents breed fast and swarm, a ferret is NO comparison to small rodents nor does it appose any threats to the above mentioned.

Actually California is one of the LEAST progressive states when it comes to owning pets. Very few small mammals are allowed in CA: cats, dogs, chinchillas, rabbits, guinea pigs and certain hamsters, mice, and rats. That's the whole list. Even gerbils are not legal in CA. I hope CA's draconian pet pans get repealed.
