  • This really worked.

    Thank you so much.

    I used a Draper HG2002.

    Has 2 settings 300/600 deg.

    300 deg worked fine.

  • What heat gun you got?

  • Tank you very much , from Germany !

  • hey dude im 13yrs old and i just took apart my ps3 with ur video thank you

  • yo. i just done the fix step by step. i have done this more than 5 times now on my playstation 3 and on others. the thing is that this time when i done it, i tried to turn it on but there was no power in the play station. the lights where no showing . what can i do now ? please get back to me ASAP thanks

  • Thermal paste or pad?

  • and after one week again.

  • My hot air gun is 1100degrees is it to hot ? will it melt the board ?

  • @idnurxx first check if its C OR F DEGREES

    350C=662F

  • can i use 300 degrees?

  • i sent my 40gb fat to a local game shop and they say it couldn't be fixed. i followed ur vid and tried fixing it myself and it works like a charm. altho, the fan is always loud 5-10 min after turning on, kinda annoying. wateva, i just wanted the save data to transfer to my new slim. thanks gilksy for the amazing guide.

  • what happens if you move the motherboard while it is cooling? will your ps3 get ylod no matter what?

  • @HaiyItsAJ The Parts are very Hot, when you move it, than you musst be afraid that all is GAME OVER !

When you move it, than it can happens that the Chips gets out position, than its realy fuckt up to get them back perfect !

So take care, and DONT MOVE IT while its HOT !

    Cheers ^^

  • For all of my fellow American ps3 users using this guide, keep in mind the video is showing 350 degrees Celsius, not Farenheit. 662 degrees farenheit=350 degrees celsius. Just FYI in case your heat gun just show farenheit.

  • can i use a normal hairdryer instead of a heat gun?^^

  • what happens if you melt some of the small rubber pads can you repace them with somthing else

  • @hollywoodcashmoney29 Get a new one.

  • @HarPoonz18 thats what i want to do but first ive got to fix this piece of shit so i can sell it

  • Thanks! I fixed it AFTER I bought a PS3 SLIM. Oh well, LAN anyone?! Mwahahaha!

  • is this hard please reply

  • thankyou this fix saved me a lot of time and money

  • I did this for my 1st Gen 40Gig and it worked for one day then yellow light came back, is my PS3 done for?

  • what the fack is arctic silver

  • @orex211

    thermal paste

  • will this fix the red screen error too?

  • Hi I only have a DEWALT DW340K Heavy Duty Hot-Air Gun any idea how i would know where i should turn the temp wheel, I have guessed half way but I am unsure and do not want to completely burn the motherboard of the ps3. I bought tht artic silver 5 stuff and the stuff to clean the parts needed and ps3 is already stripped ready, its just I dont want to completely fry it lol. all help is welcome :)

  • My 40GB fatty died on me last night and I just did this fix. I don't have a heat gun so I used a hair dryer and heated each area for about 5 minutes each. Its working fine now, hopefully it lasts.

  • I have a 1st generation 40 gb PlayStation but it looks totally different when I open it up. I am looking to repair mine but it really looks different. Even the motherboard is different.

  • Comment removed

  • To my understanding if I just clean the CPU and GPU then heat them both one by one for about 15 to 20 seconds let it cool and apply artic silver and rebuild I should be good?

I ask becuase I see lots of different methods like heated other chips and replacing thermal pads, and also adding a copped shim or using flux whats up with all that. what is the EXACT name of the paste I see some that say artic silver 5 and another artice silve matix wich is way cheap?

  • @jeovanny this worked for my ps3 fat and ps3 slim too...so yea , it works very well if you do exactly what he did

  • i did it but now it wont show any picture its on though

  • This Is My 3rd Time Doing This. First Time Lasted 4 Months, 2nd 7 Months. To Me 2 Hours Of Work Beats Buying A New PS3 Anyday.

  • mine worked for 5 minutes, then YLOD. Thanks...

  • @lainesnyder SO HARDCORE!

  • thanks oh so very much. this has been a Christmas miracle to me. My precious PS3 is working again!

  • Just one question, how long will this keep working for after you fix it?

  • what if you dont have a heat gun ? can u use a hair dryer ?

  • @TheMickyGMan1 lol are you joking, you need to get to 350-400 degrees, a hair dryer wont cut it.

  • God dammit! I melted the black chips!!!! I was doing the circular motion and aproxamatley a 1" (25.4mm) from them! Now they are sca.....rooooed.

Be carefull guys, things can melt very easy.

  • @V6stu I did the same damn thing it happened like 2 seconds after I put the heat on moving it!

  • will dynex thermal compound work 2 fix on the ps3?

  • ha ha you're awesome! thanks man I'll be donating! Also, for those who don't know, the 3 beep error IS the YLOD u just gotaa watch closely for the yellow light before it starts blinking a steady red.

  • @xSyN1sTeRx is the ps3 working until now ?

  • what compound is that ??

  • thanx for the tortrial we tried everything until we saw all the vids responding to yours and when i tried it, it worked! :)

  • Does it have to be 350 C can it be 300 C?

  • I like the hands expression when you tell us not to move the board, like the 6:46 gesture, it's funny...thank you mate.

  • To all the people who asks if they have to use a heat gun... As long as the air is around 350 degree Celsius, you can use any type of source, so as long as your hairdryer is not heavily modified, no you can not use a hairdryer. It has to be around 350 degree Celsius to melt the soldier points.

  • @FreaksFreakout actually its 240 round

  • do i have to use a heat gun?can i use a hairdryer?

  • Götüne koyim senin....

  • im just going to use my hot breath since i cant afford a hair dryer or heat gun :(

  • @UhgeneIgnorian haha just fart on it for a few hours, eat something spicy :p

  • I have fixed several HP notebooks the same way as your doing on the PS3. Their fault was on the cooling system, so I had to create a copper heat sink to change for the original made of aluminum and then I tried to solder the GPU and/or the chipset.

  • @ avenged ... after the board cools 15- min should do

  • @TheHonestPizza Right haha. so I guess there's no substitute for a heat gun?

  • what if I don't have a heat gun? Can I use a blowdryer or something?

  • yo estoy en duda pero con ganas de hacerlo !!!

  • YOUR ONE CLEVER GUY!

  • alguien me puede decir si es seguro este procedimiento y si en realidad funciona por favor

  • @amorjuan1.......... esto es sí seguro y fijará la mayoría del ylod ps3 ...

  • My 60GB Playstation 3 Did not even come with those sticky pads at the beginning of the video?

  • i take that back, he puts them on in part 4 :)

  • @avenged8fold1 Both of mine ripped in half when I took them off :(

  • when does he replace those rubber looking things he peeled off at 0:40 ?

  • wat materials do i need

  • @therazyaznboy he tells you at the start of part one......

  • Thanks for the video.I had no idea that the chips on the other side of the board also need reflowing.Since i followed another video where the guy only reflowed the gpu, cpu and the chips near them i wasnt able to fix the ylod the first time i did it.Opened up that thing again , also reflowed the other side and the ps3 lives again :).

  • regarding last post my ps3 turns on but says it is overheating and will turn off so i know its not a connection problem thats why i dont reckon it would need the heat gun!

  • @gilksy1 is it necessary to heat the board? can i not just clean and re apply the paste? i reckon the heat messes up the solder connections and dont really see the need for it???

  • @paulirish09 your missing the point, the heat gun is what fixes it by reflowing the solder balls.

  • wat if the thermal paste is blk?

  • where would i get some of the heat glue?

  • hey what if i dont have anyof that heat stuff? will anything else work?

  • does slim ps3 have this trouble ? dam them 60gb ps3s :( CANT EVEN PLAY ANY OV MY DAM GAMES NOW MISSIN MY PS3 AND PLAYSTATION HOME ALOT

  • والله ازريت

  • @gilksy1 I have done this process 2 times already, the first time i did it it worked just fine for 2 months but the second time around i tried this It worked just fine for a week but now it has no YLOD but it has another issue the issue is that my PS3 when i play any game it shows a bunch of lines, black screens, and things on screen that arent supposed to be there and the games also freeze even the Demos Freeze! Please i need your advice! i guess its the GPUs Fault im not sure! What can i do?

  • @cenasux115 BUY A NEW PS3

  • @cenasux115 sounds like it is its time. New ps3 for xmas!

  • every time i see him gesturing at the board saying "do not move this board," it feels like he's getting so close to touching it it makes me cringe

  • hi, i recently bought a 500gb HD for my 40gb version and i looked on the internet and some people said it can overheat, could it be the reason that i already fixed it twice and im going to fix it again? cause the store man said it was ok to have a 500gb HD

  • How come you use the spread method for thermal paste instead of the dot method?

  • whats the white board thing you put under the ps3 board?

  • hey do i need a heat gun or can i use a blower?

  • Is this checking-thing

  • Instead of the heat gun can i use a blower or blow dryer please respond ASAP

  • well it's alive again!!!!! only problem now is, my fan is blowing like crazy.

gilsky, do you know what the problem could be??? please help.

and thnx for that awesome tutorial

  • it worked for me... but three months later(now) i got the ylod again..

    will it work twice????

  • @dendeut yup, right now im following the guide to fix my ylod for the third time. It'll probably happen again, but i just got a new ps3 for my birthday but i didnt transfer all the savegames yet.. so im fixing it right so i can transfer the savegames, And i really recommend making regular backups because you cant recover any data from your hdd after the ps3 broke..

  • Worked like a charm!!!

  • also if I take off the heat sinks on the ps3 CPU and GPU what will happen and what if I put thermal paste will the ps3 last long ?

  • Comment removed

  • will my ps3 run fine without thermal paste because I ran out and I fix my ps3 without thermal paste and my ps3 keeps on lasting for a week. Also if I change the fan will it run better because this is a 40gb model and they screw up pretty quick, my fan keeps on going loud in 30 miunutes ?

  • so I just remove that thing and then. . . everything will be fine?

  • Fixing it rite now!!quiet hard applying the thermal compound!!but did well

  • So... Can I use an oven? I don't have a heat gun. The problem with mine, is that it isn't accepting disks as well as it likes to turn itself on and off. Would it be possible to use a tube and a hair dry with the stove to redirect the heat onto the board, or would it be best to bake my board.

  • Comment removed

  • It worked! Thanks :)

  • Finally a video that shows me the recommended temperature in action...and little details i didn't knew until now. thanks dude!

  • Can i reflow with a hair dryer

  • @TheCodMaster10000 No, a hairdryer won't get hot enough, and they blow too fast. It must be a heat gun, preferably a digital one as shown. They can be had at a Home Depot for $50.

  • @MobileTaz thanks, ill go buy one

  • i have a question . when cooling down for 15 min , do you use a fan or AC to cool it down or you just let it sit there for 15 min without any fan or AC ? thanks

  • @jenova6669 It just has to sit and cool naturally. If you use a 'patience substitute' such as a fan, it will cool too fast and the joints will crack (defeating the entire purpose of the repair).

  • @MobileTaz its been a long time waiting for a reply . thanks i'm gonna do it today .

  • does 300 c will be ok because my gun has 2 settings 300 and 600 c

  • Its sooo tempting to move the board!!

  • @19kylegreer96

    Thanks for the info!

  • I have a lead free reflow oven - can I reflow the entire board with no ill effects? Is the glue holding the larger bottom components still effective?

  • I have a question I haven't watched the video yet but why do you need a heat gun???? An how does it help fixing the ps3??

  • @ccarino10 The fix is basically to fix a 'dry' joint on the board, what happens is the PS3 overheats and a join, made from soldier, cracks, causing the yellow light, doing this just melts it to reform the cracked joint.

  • These black pads are thermalpads if you loose them the system will overheat and get damaged... Go to a Pc store and buh some new, but they has to be as thick as the original

  • Hi, what are the 2 bl;ack tapes on the four black chips for? I removed mine and lost them are they important? thanks

  • That was the quickest 15 mins ever!

  • how come if the problem is the overheating and now we are supposed to heat it up some more... ;\ as long as it works

  • @ogbudsone high temperature of working processors disconnects some solders and messes up the integrity of a circuit. re-heating them melts them back in place, not a permanent solution, but a solution nontheless.

  • @Shemassault cool bro thanks for the info, but im going to just send my backwards compatible ps3 for new ps3 slim that was refurbished for 90bucks :D from sony

  • thanx mate this worked alough i know its only for a while but hey greattttttt...good vid

  • Since 350C is ~ 662F, which would you choose between 500F or 750F? I'm looking for a heat gun, but I really don't want to have to lay down 50+ bucks especially when I got the PS3 for about 25 bucks.

  • @malaglory lol kleber xD

    nein man das is Wärmeleitpaste

    und eine Heissluftpistole

    Wärmeleitpaste ca. 10 €

    Heissluftpistole ca. 16 €

    bei amazon.

  • can you do this without the heatgun if not can you do it with a hairdryer

  • Too much paste..

  • lol, when u advance on videos u will see less views, video 1, more than 1 million views, second video, 500k views, third video, 270k views, XD people giving up XD LOL

  • i may sound stupid, but is the gun 350F or 350 celsius?

  • @theNitroremedy Celcius

  • Why does it matter how much paste you put on? it actually looks like you put too little on. I built pcs before and when it came to paste, I would do a squiggly line across and down the cpu then spread evenly and it seemed to work for me? Id rather be safe with a little excess than sorry later on with not enough.

  • @EPRADOX73 Actually he put in a little too much. You actually just need a thin layer only in the middle. You just need to put half a pea size in the middle and squeeze the heatsink onto it. It supposedly prevents air bubbles from forming better than spreading it out like that... but I don't do these things for a living, so I could be wrong.

  • ill pay u a tenna if u fix mine for me i down know how 2 do it as i dont have a heat gun :(

  • Why do you have to user the Heat gun?

  • Hi, i held my heat gun about 1 1/2 inch from chip for 20 seconds, then it prespired and ballooned. I put everything back and my ps3 is working fine ...

  • @808burt isit inbox hw u dne it

  • great guide worked a treat, even if it just lasts a couple of months will give me time to save for a slim!

  • gilksy ive done this a few times and it worked for a few weeks to a month or two, but i've tried it again and now:

Ps3 turns off the moment it is connected to a power supply

    green light beeps once

    turns off

    doesnt respond

    any suggestions?

I'll say again, ive done this a couple of times and it worked each time

  • ok so I just fixed my ps3 that had the ylod since April using your instructions!

  • @macaronichole1 since april? mine was since the past year XD

  • wow it still worked thanks

  • craap, i melted one of my nec chips it ballooned, i wonder if i should buy another chip n put it on? Omg my heat gun has no temp gauge

  • @808burt

perhaps your talking about the heatspeading tape.

imo instead of heating , first clean everything , using acetone or toluene , and being a 12y self employed repairman i wount advise any of the heating procedures , especially the oven one WITHOUT AT LEAST USING FLUX AND KNOW WHAT YOURE DOING. ive scavenged boards before using a blowtorch and if your ic when bubble then your heated your board not 15s but for an hour what did you do imo you burned the top tape.

  • @808burt i just did too. i just checked and it is a capacitor. i melted through mine as if they made it out of rubber.

  • craap, i melted one of my nec chips it ballooned, wonderifi should buy yanoth

  • @808burt

no , unless you got a scavenged board next to you i rank your chances of success to about 2% if you actually fired a chip ., thou i would be very surprised you managed to bubble a silicon die using a heat gun , i never succeded in balooning a chip even with a blowtorch to scavenge them . so my take you only baked the thermal compound tape thats on many chips in there.

  • wow I was gonna try to fix my friends broken ps3 and keep it, fuck that

  • I just watched your video's a couple of days ago. I had bought a PS3 with the ylod and followed your instructions. I bought a heat gun last night and this morning I performed the fix. I got to say I'm surprised it worked! I'm formatting the hard drive as I'm typing here, it's been going strong for the last hour and a half and there is still over an hour left to format (removing previous owner stuff). Many Thanks!! You're awesome!!! =)

  • @gilksy1 Can you get away with 250C or 450C by adjusting the time? There's no 350C option on the one I was able to get :(

  • "I've used it before, it worked absolutely fine."

Well, why have you found yourself doing this again?

  • @SHiTJuFro743 if you watched the first video - he says he just picked this unit up off of craigslist or ebay or something - this is a 'new' unit to him

  • @harryk1977 yeah, missed out on that the first time

  • just threw my ps3 in the trash god dam pencil torch failed on me in the middle of the the fix.

  • Why does this work? and why it only works for a few months?

  • lol so I noticed the first video of this series has 1million+ views, and the rest have considerably next? people just go "oh fuck this I'll send it in!" haha

  • @sHuzifyy thats what i'm doing fuck this shit, fuck this wanker bullshit !

  • can i use a hair dryer instead, i have no heat gun

  • will a hair dryer work for this on high heat and ow fan??

  • @Wutor A hair dryer doesnt get nearly hot enough. This is done at 350 degrees celcius which is hot enough to burn your hair to a crisp.

  • Hi, my heat gun only has two options: 250C and 450C. So I am wondering which heat setting I should use and for how many seconds do I apply it?

  • @VancouverTam You got a Jobmate too eh? I've been wondering the same thing. This was the only one I could get my hands on as well. So I'm wondering if you can get away with either.

  • Sweet, worked like a charm.... =) and I'm a total hw noob... =D
