@nmolino99 I had an older model that did not have a sling post. But you can easily take the upper out and drill for one in it. Then you can mount any walmart bipod or anything like that
I just sold one of these because it was such a pain to disassemble and clean. It was very accurate, but not worth the trouble of cleaning it every 150 rounds (which it needed to feed).
My dad had a Rem597 17HMR he bought a few years ago. He bought it as a varmint/fun gun. He shot CCI ammo mainly thru it. We put a new scope on it an where sighting it in awhile back...and the dam thing BLEW UP! Clean gun (~70rnds down pipe after clean), CCI ammo.
I was spotting, he was firing. The mag blew out and the mag ripped apart.
He sent the gun in to remington and requested a .22mag. They sent him a brand new 597 in 22mag. I have yet to see a failure w/ this new 597.
Anyone else have a problem with the magazine catch pivot pin falling out? Mines done it twice now, and I've only owned it for a few months. I've had relatively few problems directly related to the magazines themselves. Other than those, I really like the 597. Mines a Sporter Stainless, 20" barrel, wood stock.
I've had my 597 for 12 years. It's got the gen1 plastic 10 shot mag, never had a problem getting 10 rds in it. My only complaint with that mag is it has to be seated firmly in place before the catch clicks. I have 3 clear Remington mags tough to get to 30 so I usually load to about 25. No problems with any of them, ordered 1 first to try then got 2 more. I find that as long as I use a min 37 grain bullet feed issues are not a problem. I generally stick to 40 grain rds. Great & Fun rifle, love it
I sighted one of these, I decided at 50 it was sighted when I could put a group in a staple. The mags used were all fresh out of the box, and while the 10 needed breaking in, by the end of the day they were taking all 10 rounds. The 30 rounders, the black is reliable, but I've found doesn't engage the hold-open, and the clear functioned fine in the cold, only misfed because I overloaded it, and they both took all 30 immediately, no disassembly on the mags at all. Overall great gun, seen 'em $150
I owned a M597 several years ago and used it as a plinking gun. sent several hundred round through it and it was the worst 22.... well the sig mosquito might have been worse. It would fail to eject and fail to feed after about 5 rounds. If i fired anywhere near as fast as in the video it would instantly jam. I like your video but cannot agree with this being a good gun. sold it and not looking back.
Better than the 10/22 ?.....Remington should be ashamed of this abomination. Factory mags stink and the gun is a pain in the a** to clean especially the magnum version. Not to mention the 17HMR mess when Remington was going to do us all a favor and "buy back" the junk with a voucher that could only be used on another Remington. This video looks great but do your self a favor and stay a way from this thing unless you like clearing stove pipes and jams.
My Remington 597 was the only gun I felt guilty giving away. I bought it when it first came out, and called them the next day about the magazines. I tried several of all 3 magazines and it never fed a whole 10 round magazine without jamming. The coating on the bolt rails flaked off after less than 5000 rounds. With any velocity ammo, sometimes the hammer wouldn't stay back. Through several calls, Remington customer service was completely unwilling to fix it, and really left me unhappy with them.
I have a 597 and i absolutely love mine i have it shooting a querter size group at 100 yards. Their great guns. Ive also shot the 10/22 and i honestly enjoy the 597 more. Great review!
Great review on the Remington 597. I have shot one these .22 rifles just yet. I have the Ruger 10/22, Marlin 60, S&W M&P .22 and a few other in my colletion. However, after watching this review I might just take a closer look at the 597. Oh, way cool intro on this vid and you had some very nice groups too.
Hey nutnfancy - I've discovered how to make the 10 round factory mag 100% reliable. I have polished the insides of the magazines with metal polishes, in addition to some action polishing, and have discovered a weapon with AR-type reliability and 1.4 MOA accuracy with SK Match ammo. Let me know if you're curious.
I hope I can pick one up some day. Not really important if it is a Ruger 10/22 or a Remington 597. It looks like a real fun shooter. I am currently shooting a .22LR single shot bolt action rifle.
I have a model 597 i bought it for my son whos now ten i got him the carbine version with floating barrel cus he wanted a rifle like my ar and with the collapsible stock it fits him perfectly when we go tot he range we end up shooting his more cus its a just all out fun rifle to play with and its so much cheaper then shooting 223's
I own this rifle. It may not have as many after market products as the 10/22 but I had a choice of several stocks made by Boyd's. Also the Archangel kit. I went with the Boyd's SS Evolution stock. Because I saw some very nice rifles with that stock. I added a Centerpoint 3x9x40AO scope with mil dots. All and all I am very pleased. I don't have problems getting 10 rounds in the rifle of FTF issues. I plan to use this rifle to teach my grandchildren how to safely use a firearm. So shoot safe.
I have had a 597 for over 10 years now. In fact I still have the Gen 1 mags. I've run 1000's of rds through mine and have had maybe a dozen fail to feed. I do know that I have to run Rem Thunderbolt 22lr rds for the best accurancy. My rifle simply works the best with that match-up. I have a couple of high-cap I got from Midway for about $15 each and they get the job done.
I am sure the TNP nation knows this as does Nutnfancy. Subsonic ammo does not function well in semi auto rifles and pistols. Your mileage may vary. My experience says its hit and miss gun to gun.
Love the 597, but they really start falling apart as they get older/heavily used. I wish they didn't cheap out on the parts they know are going to receive wear and tear over time. So much plastic, so little aluminum.
I love this gun, but the mags really are crap. And rat shooting? Starlings are far more troublesome- their poop kills the paint on your cars! Rats are cute, aside from that whole thing with the plague... minor inconvenience. *cough* They still don't have anything on chinchillas though. /endaddmoment
i have a remington 552 speedmaster and i love it, it is the first gun ive ever owned given to me by my uncle and i wouldnt part with it for the world its a super accurate 22 and i love mine ive never played with any other remington 22s but i would like to get one and run it through its paces
You're so right about that trigger time. My dad grew up in a suburban town in California, and could only shoot a pellet gun for years, but it all built up to make him an awesome shot. I've seen him shoot Asprin out of the air with a bb gun.
I have owned my Remington 597 for close to 6 years now and I love it, the only thing that that bugs me about it is that there aren't as many accessories for it like the Ruger 10/22. I scoped mine about 5 months ago and was shooting fairly nice groups but I would like to really slow down and try to shoot some good groups. Thanks for the review and keep doing what your doing.
Gotta ask your opinion on something @nutnfancy I'm wanting to get a compact scope either 2.5x or 4x, only wanting to spend around $150 on it (more if it's worth it), but having trouble picking one out. There are a few I've seen in the $40~ish price range but low priced optics always make me feel a little uneasy. Any recommendations? Also, when I say compact I'm thinking right around 8 inches or less.
have had one for 6 months, a few ftf when it was fresh out of the box, broke it all down and sanded under the barrel(free floated), mounter a bipod. love it, so happy and thanks for all of your vids, i also own and love ruger's sr9c.
Great video. I've looked at it and thought it was a competitive rifle to the 10/22, Marlin 795, and some Savage models. I'm real happy with my 795 though what a rifle!
Great Review!! So glad you finally did a review on the 597 I've been waiting to see one from you since I bought my 597. I have a question and this is for anyone else who might have an answer. At about 35:29 when he's holding the bolt do you see that little hole right above the extractor? I was wondering If that was a defect such as a thin spot in the casting, or if it is supposed to be there and serve a purpose.
Great review! I shoot my 597 with my 2 boys and we have a blast. Totally agree with the mag woes. As others have stated a Volquartsen extractor is a great add on if you have FTE issues.
Could you please tell me what muzzle break / flash hider is featured in the gun you used in the review? Also, did you have to get the barrel threaded?
I would love to run a suppressor- but Iowa law prohibits them.
I've had both the 10/22 and the 597. I still have the 597 and love it. never had a single issue with magazines or malfunctions. it is a great little rifle. Mine is the same Walmart mossy joke camp model you have in the review. I think I bought it brand new for around $140 about 7-8 years ago. The only thing I have done is add a Bushnell 3x9 rim fire scope and sling plus a couple of spare mags. It shoots great and patterns close to MOA at 100 yards. thanks for the great review. Keep up the good
Having just purchased a 597 a few weeks ago I was interested to see your review.
I bought 4 extra used factory mags from a used mag bin and they plus the one that came with it all hold ten and all work fine. I guess I got lucky in that respect.
I'm just over 1000 rounds in with zero malfunctions.
I love the bolt lock back on empty.
Stock shape is great.
Steel sights are great.
I don't mind the mag release.
Below: thanks for the tip on cleaning from the breech
I had one for a couple of years. First generation magazines, both plastic and metal. Complete piece of shit. I liked the gun a lot, apart from the fact that I could not get it to feed an entire mag without failing. In hindsight, it may have been a mistake to get rid of it.
One thing I didn't like, was that you needed tools to take it apart. But I suppose that's one thing that will forever plague .22's.
I love your gun reviews.....especially when you can get them at walmart. I sell guns at the walmart in my town and have people ask all the time "what do you think about it". If i have personal experience i will let them know about it but after that i usually recommend that they do some internet research. When i can send them straight to a video like this makes me feel good. The videos almost always support my personal experience. Also, turning people on to TNP is a great thing in my mind.
I actually own 2 597. One with the OEM stock and the other with a promag Archangel kit. Both have the VQ hammer and extactor. It improves the pull and overall functionality of the rifle a lot. As far as a superior aftermarket 10rd magazone, they DO make them: Look for them at keepshooting (dot) com SKU: REMINGTONMAG . This mag is NOT a factory mag. It is heavier and more polished than the 3rd gen OEM magazine. It's also CHEAPER than the OEM.
@ewrlon Yup. I have 2 of them. They are just re-branded OEM Remington 30-rd mags. I get them because they are simply cheaper than having the Remington stamp on them. Shooter's Ridge makes a 25rd magazine that has a detachable bottom panel for cleaning, and unique notches to stick 2x 25-rd mag together for quick reloading. I haven't tried them yet, but heard good reviews about them.
@tuksonrider Can you easily get 10 rounds in your mags from keepshooting (dot) com? I have 2 of them, and the 10th one feels like forcing a square peg through a round hole. I called them about it, and the guy said he had never heard of it. I challenged him to try 1 all the way to 10 but he was reluctant. But other than that, I agree, they're good quality. I'm jealous of your archangel version. I'm waiting on the funds before I get mine. Are the hammer and extractor worth it?
@rizzobro1 I own 4 of them and have never had a problem putting 10 rounds in them. Perhaps put 9 in them, and let them sit for a week or 2 to break the spring in. As far as the VQ hammer and extractor, they are the single best upgrade you can buy. If you don't have an extraction issue, get the hammer upgrade first. It's halves the trigger pull, and makes a nice clean break. It feels like a new rifle.
@tuksonrider Sweet! Thanks for the tip. I've actually had 9 loaded in one of them for a while now, I'll check it and see how the 10th goes. I'm definitely going to get a hammer when $ allows! :) Thanks for the info!
I bought a 597 for 50 bucks from a friend around this time last year. The spring in the factory mag was so weak that it literally never chambered. I wanted a .22 lr just for trigger time, but in all honesty I have always wanted a 10 22. I have yet to buy one, but I will one day.. hopefully soon
Good looking rifle. I still would probably buy a Remington 10/22 if I had to choose between the two because of versatility. But this seems like a very solid rifle anyway. Thanks Nutn!
Also I actually like training with bulk .22 ammo. To be honest, I think it helps my training to have to clear a jam every now and then. If I need my ammo to work, I will run CCI.
Great lookin' little .22 bro and awesome review! I'll be sticking with the 10/22 for now though I think. The next .22LR rifle I acquire will be a bolt action so that it makes the shooter (my son really) pay more attention to accuracy than the coolness of just pulling the trigger....lol!!
Excellent vid man! I'm bummed because I bought a 597 last November and from the first time shooting with it, I encountered a trigger lockup issue. Remington support has been a nightmare to deal with since the trigger assemblies are back ordered. Hopefully, they get it back to me soon, so I can enjoy the rifle based on the aspects you covered in this vid!
The one thing that I will say about the Ruger BX-25 mags is that I did have some problems with reliability when loaded to 25 rounds. However this was only about the 2nd round shot, after 500 rounds without cleaning in the gun and 1,000 rounds though the mag without cleaning. Not a deal to me at all.
hey, thanks for the review .i bought the ruger 10/22 based on yor reviews and am very happy.the funny thing was that i was looking at a 597 and that made me want to go home and get serious about doing my homework before buying.low and behold not only are there lots of folks out there to that love the ruger ,my go to guy ,nutnfancy loves it in his reviews.i really liked the sights on the 597,the gun just looked and felt good, but im sure glad i did my homework.thanks nutn.TNP!
Not sure if anyone else would care to see it, but would LOVE a review on the Henry lever action .22 paired with marble arms catch .22 re-loader for the tubular magazine. I love your .22 reviews and have always bought the reviewed gun within a week of watching (wife and kids are always good excuses for a new gun!) but i couldn't wait on the Henry and picked one up......I LOVE IT...i think a review from you would turn a lot of other people on to yet another home run, old style, fun shooting .22!
I have a Savage MK2 TR that i absolutely love that i can keep a 2in group with from 200 yards with Remington 550, but it is a little hard to tote around, and i would like to get one that is a bit lighter and easier to walk around with. I really appreciate your reviews on different 22's because they are very through, unbiased, and full of great information. Keep up the good work.
Have this rifle...hate the magazines like you said. Have had so many problems with the 10 rounders I don't buy em anymore because it is a bummer to shoot with them. Have a clear 30 rounder and it is more reliable but still has problems.
Love .22lr shoot it all the time and off of your review and recomendation bought like $400 of Action target steel 3 evil roys and the super cool and fun rimfire duleling tree, also saved a fat stack of cash with the 20% off code witch is still going for 2 more days.
I have a 597 and I love it...except for the extended magazines. I bought one clear polymer, used it for less than 500 rounds and it cracked. It never fit properly, and the housing cracked. I contacted Remington, sent it back, and they sent me a brand new one. Love the customer service and It's a very accurate rifle.
Very cool to know yet another great .22 option. With how affordable and with their quality I might one up. Right now my focus is to get a .22 AR so I might check back on your M&P15-22 and Sig522 reviews. Thanks for sharing!
I have heard some negative stuff about you nutnfancy but so far you have given me the highest quality reviews i have yet to see anywhere. I appreciate all the information and i hope that one day youll be able to branch off into archery.
Awesome review Nutnfancy, as always, impressive to see/hear about the numbers of magazines you acquired (really gives honest data points about what the rifle is capable of compared to how it could be perceived at first and second glance, probably will save ev. future owners some grief) !! Awesome thoroughness! and of course the TNP production quality!
Nutn, what I find with my 3rd gen 597 mags in regards to loading 10 rounds in there, sometimes you have to make sure the rounds stagger alternately as they are loaded. not sure what causes them not to, but occasionally I cant get 10 rounds in or I dent the top round, look at the rounds in there and one or two didn't stagger. I believe the extractor on the 597 is the biggest reliability issue, I replaced mine with the Volquartsen part and have not had a jam since after over a thousand rounds.
I decided to go with the Ruger 10/22 CRR It has a shorter stock for my God daughter and I can still use it. I contact FFL dealer later this week. The new Ruger BX-25 magazine also helped sell me on this.
@mrKB19xx Is it that hard to fast forward bro? Most of his reviews show off some footage using the system that he's reviewing. It gives you some context of where his review is coming from and why he's making the comments he does. But if you're crunched for time, or not interested - just use the scrubber.
@mrKB19xx yea I think he likes tweaking his editing skills, bc I am sure everyone just skips 98 percent of the video.....its like cliff notes for NUTNF
I love the how they don't use lined barrels. I am turned off by the lack of good mags though, that the 10/22 sold me when ruger came out with the BX-25 mags, Enjoy them. But as for .22 they are to have fun, so enjoy what you get.
I'm looking for a .22LR carbine, and I really like the Remington 597 TVR, but for the price I could get the Beretta U22 Neos with Carbine kit, and basically have 2 guns with the same amount of 2nd type of cool, so I'm wondering if there is really a "first type of cool" or PRACTICAL reason to choose the Remington or even a 10/22 over the Beretta?
Yep I have a .17 HMR Remington 597 and I really love it! As far as I know it has had no failures ever in any way except for the magazine has a weak spring that really only allows you to use 5+1 instead of the advertised 8+1. The rifle itself has functioned %100! And the .17HMR bullets have never caused problems the only thing I have noticed is the cases will occasionally bulge a little bit but since you cant reload them who cares they've never broken or cracked or caused injury! I love the Gun!
Nutn how do you like smartwool, seen the logo on you sleave. Anyway thanks for the 597 review. All I know is Marlin and Ruger, so its nice to see something different.
Doodle is doing well. However at 2:40 it looks like he's pulling the trigger with his hand rather than just the finger. Work that out and he will only get better. Thanks for another fine review.
Magazines, obviously not impressed, sights look excellent, just wondering, left handed shooters? I know you said the mag release was weird, but is it even ambidextrous? Other than that the suppressor looks (sounds) great. You have me sold.
I'm so jealous my 597 used to shoot round after round like that. The dang receiver cracked and broke right where the barrel bolts on. Gotta get it welded and hope it works ok after that.
Gonna chime in here and say I've got five factory 10rd mags and two Remington branded 30rd mags and I've not had any feeding or reliability issues, though a couple of the 10rd mags I bought new would only hold 7 or 8 rounds right out of the box. Now, however, I can get 10 rounds in no sweat.
Polishing the guide rods is a great idea, and make sure the tension on your guide rods is as low as possible as they have a tendency to curve under tension and bind.
Agreed, 22's are ideal for someone with some extra land and a pest problem. I took out every hole digging, yard destroying, garden consuming one of those bastards with my ruger 10/22. Shot one while it was standing on its back legs, thing just fell straight back, small caliber but he didn't feel a thing and woodchucks are freaking big mean rodents!!
I really like my 597. Got it at Dicks for about the price in the review. Mine came with a scope, no iron sights. The stock was OD green, kinda ugly. They paint real well with a spray can of Krylon. Mine is now a metallic brown. I think it looks real nice.
In my experience with my own 597, the twin guide rods can cause reliability issues. ive experimented with it myself countless times and have made mine extremely, and even more so reliable than when i 1st got it. The problem usually comes from people torquing down the 2 hex bolts holding the rods in place too much.
Its a case of having to find the perfect balance of pressure and tightness that they need to be tightened. But once you get it down it will rock and roll. Mags...different story
Make sure you DO NOT USE A METAL BRUSH (use a toothbrush) on the NICKEL TEFLON TRIGGER GROUP.... and depending on the trigger guard make sure and check what oils/sprays you let leak on it as some solvent's will melt at least Marlin 60's..Again, learned that the hard way!lol
@nutnfancy Man you went ninja in this video. I think this is the first time I've seen you wear black long sleeve shirts in your vids haha. I never see you wear black.
I've never had the chance to handle one of these or shoot one. Great video and I will definitely give these a look over when I get a chance. I'm hoping to see a Smith and Wesson Booth review :)
It just doesn't seem like any of the magazines are any different. The springs are SO weak and the way they stack causes them to bind. The main downfall of this gun is the magazine design. The gun itself is lightweight, comfortable, and easy to shoot. It's just a damn shame those magazines are so awful.
very accurate review, I have had a 597 synthetic for 3 years now. It's very accurate when the mags are running good. I run a few promags and some 1 or 2 gen factory mag. I run cci mini mags which seem to be very accurate and effective out to 100 yds.
Being that .22LR is rimfire, isn't it dangerous to store them all together in a jar like that? Not criticizing, just wondering since I'm not very familiar with what kind of force rimfire needs to ignite.
Hey Nutn loved the review. A .22 LR gets max velocity by the time you get to a 12-13'' barrel, so anything beyond that really is a waste except perhaps for sight radius. Worth the weight? Meh, not for me...but then I did get the 18" barreled 10/22 just because it was least expensive.
does anyone know if you can mount a bipod on this weapon

Hey nutnfancy - I've discovered how to make the 10 round factory mag 100% reliable. I have polished the insides of the magazines with metal polishes, in addition to some action polishing, and have discovered a weapon with AR-type reliability and 1.4 MOA accuracy with SK Match ammo. Let me know if you're curious.

Be careful with those 60 Grain Subsonics. Unless you have a faster rate of twist they can cause baffle strikes with a can.

Great Review!! So glad you finally did a review on the 597 I've been waiting to see one from you since I bought my 597. I have a question and this is for anyone else who might have an answer. At about 35:29 when he's holding the bolt do you see that little hole right above the extractor? I was wondering If that was a defect such as a thin spot in the casting, or if it is supposed to be there and serve a purpose.
scotchtapeiscool2 1 month ago
Hi Nutnfancy,
Great review!
Keep the videos coming!
ewrlon 1 month ago
I've had both the 10/22 and the 597. I still have the 597 and love it. never had a single issue with magazines or malfunctions. it is a great little rifle. Mine is the same Walmart mossy joke camp model you have in the review. I think I bought it brand new for around $140 about 7-8 years ago. The only thing I have done is add a Bushnell 3x9 rim fire scope and sling plus a couple of spare mags. It shoots great and patterns close to MOA at 100 yards. thanks for the great review. Keep up the good

Hey Nutn, keep up the good work.
1967Twotone 1 month ago

It's also CHEAPER than the OEM.
tuksonrider 1 month ago 8
@tuksonrider any experience with the 30 round Eagle mag?
ewrlon 1 month ago
@ewrlon Yup. I have 2 of them. They are just re-branded OEM Remington 30-rd mags. I get them because they are simply cheaper than having the Remington stamp on them. Shooter's Ridge makes a 25rd magazine that has a detachable bottom panel for cleaning, and unique notches to stick 2x 25-rd mag together for quick reloading. I haven't tried them yet, but heard good reviews about them.

Thanks for the info on the mags I'm going to check them out. TNP RULES!!
opencarrydznuts 1 month ago
@tuksonrider Can you easily get 10 rounds in your mags from keepshooting (dot) com? I have 2 of them, and the 10th one feels like forcing a square peg through a round hole. I called them about it, and the guy said he had never heard of it. I challenged him to try 1 all the way to 10 but he was reluctant. But other than that, I agree, they're good quality. I'm jealous of your archangel version. I'm waiting on the funds before I get mine. Are the hammer and extractor worth it?
rizzobro1 2 weeks ago
@rizzobro1 I own 4 of them and have never had a problem putting 10 rounds in them. Perhaps put 9 in them, and let them sit for a week or 2 to break the spring in. As far as the VQ hammer and extractor, they are the single best upgrade you can buy. If you don't have an extraction issue, get the hammer upgrade first. It's halves the trigger pull, and makes a nice clean break. It feels like a new rifle.
tuksonrider 2 weeks ago
@tuksonrider Sweet! Thanks for the tip. I've actually had 9 loaded in one of them for a while now, I'll check it and see how the 10th goes. I'm definitely going to get a hammer when $ allows! :) Thanks for the info!

ScratchAce 1 month ago
The one thing that I will say about the Ruger BX-25 mags is that I did have some problems with reliability when loaded to 25 rounds. However this was only about the 2nd round shot, after 500 rounds without cleaning in the gun and 1,000 rounds though the mag without cleaning. Not a deal to me at all.

Add a VQ target hammer as well!

DavZZee 1 month ago
In my experience with my own 597, the twin guide rods can cause reliability issues. ive experimented with it myself countless times and have made mine extremely, and even more so reliable than when i 1st got it. The problem usually comes from people torquing down the 2 hex bolts holding the rods in place too much.
Its a case of having to find the perfect balance of pressure and tightness that they need to be tightened. But once you get it down it will rock and roll. Mags...different story

@Eudolus also, polishing the 2 guide rods with fine steel wool and lubing with shooters choice fp-10 has made the bolt run beautifully in my case.

It just doesn't seem like any of the magazines are any different. The springs are SO weak and the way they stack causes them to bind. The main downfall of this gun is the magazine design. The gun itself is lightweight, comfortable, and easy to shoot. It's just a damn shame those magazines are so awful.
