Over a week ago, my co-worker was driving, and I was asleep, and there was another co-worker in the back seat. For some reason, they turned the station onto this song, and I came alive after hearing it. They had been listening to rock, and although I like older rock music, I'm not as familiar with the current stuff. However, I certainly like this song and this type of music, and it was just amazing to hear it while they were controlling the radio station! lol Thanks for posting this gem!
I was listening to Johnny Mathis while all my friends were listening to The Beatles. No one will ever come near his performance of this song. Perfection and pure talent. I have the album. Also met him standing at the corner of Broad and Chestnut in the seventies. Got his autograph. Very shy, humble man with pure talent. Saw him live too. My favorite male vocalist forever.
i was 20 yrs old and in the marines when i met maria in 1960 same year the song came out from west side story i was a fool and let her go i still think of her
This song was from the LP "Faithfully" which I do have this album, but it does contains this one. It was released around 1960, just a year before the film version of "West Side Story" was released.
My parents were huge Johnny Mathis fans. My mom was named Rowena and my dad used to sing her name to this song :) Such a sweet beautiful memory. They are both gone now . How I miss them!
Singularly gorgeous. I never knew Mr. M recorded "Maria," probably my single favorite song from the score of WSS. And the Mathis vocal and the unusually glamorous arrangement brings the full beauty of the song to the forefront.
One of his very best .A Classic that will still be with us decades from now when all of the drivel and offal that some call music today will be rotting in a landfill where it belongs
Leonard Bernstein (who wrote the music for this masterpiece) noted once in an article that he'd written several symphonies before he'd written his first "pop" tune.
I'm so glad this has been put out here: The performance is lovely, and Mathis' final notes are the most perfectly-produced sounds I have ever heard emanate from the human voice.
Absolutely the BEST interpretation of this song by Mathis. I've learned to appreciate the enormous talent because of my father. He is a fan of Johnny Mathis since the earlies 60's. He is a GREAT singer with a unique voice. One of the BEST I haver EVER heard!
@undra7 Gee Maria C..My name is Maria too...don't you feel like he's singing it to you personally? I grew up w/his music & that's how I feel..Soy de San Sebastian P.R. I'm editing a publication in 3 languages..Spanish, Italian, English & I'm calling it VIVA MARIA! For Genesis 3:15 Peace Via Music VIVA MARIA!
Absolutely the best version of this song ever recorded. In case you didn't know, Mathis was not particularly fond of this song and hardly ever sings the full version in a concert.
Absolutley magnificent!
