However I do appreciate that board and lodging, food etc obviously comes at a price so it works out ok. Not a good time to be defending the country though. both are right, since the swiss have a lot of the world major banks it's considered globally neutral, but they also keep a draft and an army ready to defend itself. but they had somewhat of a secret alliance with the germans in ww2.

yeah, and the mountains help. a single soldier (any of them will do) can hold a large force at bay when traveling between the cracks. also, I think the origin of mountain warfare was born there.

There are 18 countries in the world with absolutely no military forces (costa rica, andora, samoa, tuvalu, vatican, etc.), + 3 countries that have no army but a few military forces (Iceland, monaco and panama)
