  • it's a shame these zappa idiots never saw steve on tv ..he was the first interviewer eith a great sense of humor...may sound corny today, but very sharp in its day...by the way, steve was also an excellent piano player and arranger...

  • What a cutie he was!

  • Playing the guitar is for pussies!! I wanna play the bicycle!!

  • Too young to have watched Steve Allen but everybody's giving him a hard time. Just as Zappa was a musician in his own right, Steve Allen was a host in his own right. He had to keep the audience entertained--neither he or they should be expected to have been ready for Zappa's artistic genius. Plus you gotta put yourself in Steve's shoes. Having never heard of probably half his guests he had no idea what to expect and has to be ready to save the show if it bombs at any second LIVE--no delay.

  • aha ! so thats where Frank first started peddling his art ! ? : )

  • I don't understand why folks are down on Steve Allen. He was funny here - and he gave a 22 year old Zappa 10+ minutes on his show! Remarkable!

  • The host is not a dick He is Steve Allen. One the most free thinking and forward seeing TV host of that time. Zappa got on because Mr Allen was who he was.

  • Life is all about timing. Can you dig it? ;])

  • This is pretty funny. Could you picture this performance on the X Factor, or American Idol?

  • You can tell the host is thinking "what a stupid young man" too bad we all know Zappas name and dont have the slightest idea what the hell the hosts name is!

  • @himmelfrhat1 Sadly, far more people in the realm of the conventional probably know Steve Allen's name (as humorist, creator/first host of the "Tonight Show" format, conventional music composer, etc.,) than Frank's name (especially now that he is dead). This is yet one more example of precisley how much of a dick the world really is: genius is derided, mediocrity celebrated. Oh, and Steve? Its KOTO not KYOTO you smug shithead.

  • Prelude to the Afternoon of a Sexually Aroused Bicycle Seat.

  • my bicycle wants to kill your mama

  • this is pure shit as is all zappas bullshit. you naive cunts think this is art? if this frankdouche threw a fork down the road with the noise of an alarm clock you'd probably think it was the most beautiful thing in the world

  • @JN5B11 What's pure shit is the music of today and Im sure you eat it all up just like the rest of the trendy MFs that share your pathetic life with you! Go fuck yourself and stay the fuck off of FZ pages if you dont comprende!

  • @icabodcranium your assuming i love todays music, and uhh.... suck it

  • @JN5B11 So you just post it on your home channel cause you wanna suck some random black guy?

  • @icabodcranium another racist zappa fan

  • @JN5B11 Didnt see that one coming. Would you wanna blow the african American guy thta you pay tribute to on your home channel work! You do have a video that displays "todays music" So quit playing games and go back to fucking yourself!

  • @icabodcranium you know nothing about music and don't you have a clan member you should be blowing right now

  • @JN5B11 Well, you obviously choose listening to music that`s not to your liking. No need to listen to FZ if your mind is not ready for it. I can understand it must be torture:-). To me this video is another proof of the enormous musical range of that man. He always had the curiosity of a scientist, and he used it in music as well as other kinds of expressions. And here he was just 22!

  • @sverredennye coming from someone who listens to lost prophets and godsmack. enough said

  • @JN5B11 fuck my dads been on my youtube profiles again! no kidding! i mean, i dont like FZ! i told him not to comment on youtube! im so sorry is it ok?

  • @sverredennye no, thats no excuse you need to rid yourself of your father

  • @JN5B11 you dont believe me dont you? my father thinks its ok to just comment. and if you dont accept the truth you can just go and screw your mom and rape your dad

  • @sverredennye no i believe you, you just need to kill your father

  • @JN5B11 fuck no. but i do have managed to use some of his credit card XD

  • @sverredennye I'm glad we're getting along

  • @JN5B11 im sorry but my guitar burn't your dad :P

  • @JN5B11: Wow, you're a retard. Go listen to your Justin Beiber.

  • Frank Zappa musical genius!! Steve Allen total douche, he had no idea how smart or talented Frank was. I think they though Frank was a comedy act like a plate spinner or something. Miss ya Frank you are still awesome.

  • Shows he was meant for the spotlight.

  • zappa stood the test of time as opposed to Allen...sheesh those early hosts like carson and cavett and allen etc had the bests of guests...but had no clue who was standing in front of them (at least in the future!)...

  • hilarious & really whimsical ...Steve plays really well off Zappa who's playing the young serious straight man . Zappa the straightest guy in the house? Here he is but shows the brilliance of Allen who helped chill out straight laced America that was so uptight back then . They make a great team!

  • zappa was serious about the bike thing.... the audience probably thought it was for the show. little did they now that he would be one of the greatest musicians later in life.......

  • demütigent !

  • @esf428 Steve reminds me of Leno, of course I personally don't care for Leno, but that's not the point. Frank was a pioneer as well, just way ahead of his time. Nonetheless, they both proved to be the foundation of great entertainment from two completely different angles.

  • @nephelimification , steve allen reminds you of leno ?.........wow ,

how incredibly insulting to steve allen,

comparing a legend to a hack-schmo that's terribly unfunny in all forms....

  • @fart813 Wow, your reading comprehension is astounding.

  • Don't understand all the nasty comments directed at Steve Allen. He was a pioneer, the first host of the Tonight Show and also a damn fine pianist. What he is doing here is the same formula that Carson, Letterman, Leno, and Conan would later follow.

  • steve allen spoke out against censorship, introduced mindblowingly new performers, and was ahead of his time. next to zappa he was a neanderthal, but who wasn't? think of his guts, bringing zappa on. did he make lame jokes to keep the audience happy? yep. did he put zappa down? nope, and zappa doesn't seem offended, either. try to watch dan hicks on flip wilson, with the audience rudely laughing, to see what we were up against. allen did what he had to do to bring zappa to us.

    g

  • When he started to play my cat ran away haha

  • Wiseacre jazzbos

  • That guy, trying to make all those sorry ass jokes... Just a prick who got paid too much, imo.

  • oh my God, this is real GENIUS! it's amazing! one of the most genial things i've ever seen in my entire life!!! thank you for posting and standing ovation for mr Zappa!

  • 2:48

    jam session

  • My god- Zappa is amazing

  • The "Kyoto" of Japan . . .

Loved this comment! Not criticizin', I just thought it was funny!

  • steve is a prick that should be nutted

  • he got the last laugh

  • 2:29

    STEVE ALLEN IS RACIST

  • To be honest im just discoved Zappa a lil more than six months ago but he is already one of my favs, I never realized how inovative he was a true musical genius

  • 0:45 - "Star sprangled banner" on bike.

  • thats whats wrong with music today too blooming intense and no humour, it used to be a laff every time,

  • i like muffin man better

  • The host is such a dick.

  • @SaneLunacy I'm not sure Steve Allen intended to be a dick here (he was much, much worse to Elvis Presley, due to his contempt of rock 'n roll). Honestly, I thought his comments at the end of this show's segments were very complementary of Mr. Zappa. But, Allen is known as something of a comedian (somewhat like Zappa), and probably can't help but make a few amusing comments here and there.

  • @SaneLunacy I agree. I wish he would have just shut up and let Frank do his stuff from the getgo.

  • @SaneLunacy His name was Steve Allen and, while not on the same level as Frank, if you read up on him you'll find he was quite a talented gentlemen in his own right in addition to being a television pioneer, and not a dick.

  • I thought that Zappa tuned the spokes first so each one gave off a particular note?

  • Museum stuff. Congrats!

  • Franks inspiration and hero was the French composer Edgard Varese, who if you look up on Youtube you can listen to.

  • zappa is cool - the rest of them are total idiots who think they're normal

  • He was outlandish, he was out of this world, and an entertainer for a boring world.

  • How inspiring! Zappa really knew what he was doing...

  • lol this seems like plausible influence for an early Richard D. James

  • damn!

  • Yeah!

    All go to hell!

    Very Hip...

  • Never know it by watching this but Zappa is probably the craziest musican that ever lived!

  • shutup and play your bicycle!

  • I remember seeing Jack Kerouac on Steve Allen's show. Kerouac read excerpts from "On the Road" while Steve Allen played a bluesy number on the piano. And now Steve is bringing Zappa out in his first TV appearance. When I watch current late night TV on a blue moon, and I see such banal crap as reading from newspapers, stupid animal tricks and so on. I mourn for the golden era of TV.

  • I'm a big Frank Zappa fan. I have to say.. HAHA LOL!! This is great!

  • Funny what people used to think was funny.....

  • @southrules

i think its funny they still have the same sense of humor....

  • racism ftw

  • frank zappa's the shit

  • Edgard Varase influenced.

  • guy was already a creative genius.

  • if your lucky enough to have a squeaking seat, you can squeak the seat!!

  • why must every damn video have a worthless discussion of epic measures in the comments? just smile damnit (:

  • Interesting, thanks for posting.

  • Frank Zappa... My Hero :D

  • @SuckMyAssAmerica Fuck you, Frank Zappa is God.

  • @SuckMyAssAmerica Awesome comment FAGGOT! Clearly you're a brilliant musician. Zappa recorded over 50 albums in his lifetime. He also fought Congress so that you might have the freedom to listen to the stupid fucking garbage of your choice without censorship. What have you done with your fucking waste-of-sperm life, by the way? What are you, twelve? Go watch some more MTV, and eat a dick while you're at it, BITCH.

  • @ACEHOLETHIRTEEN way 2 rip a mother fucka!!!!!!!! damn it was like reading something i wrote!!!!!!!!

  • @lecoy44 Yeah, what a turd that kid is.

  • @SuckMyAssAmerica lolya fuckin tool

  • This was great entertainment from the true masters of their crafts. It can be argued that Steve is the true king of late night TV. It's interesting to see Frank so young and see his humble beginnings, although it's obvious to anyone familiar with Frank that you can see his genius in the making here. Hard to believe we have to put up with crap like American Idol now. How we've regressed!

  • I don't know which of them is cooler. Frank for being light years beyond those sharing the stage, or Steve for not the slightest hint of condecension.

  • Think outside of the box...

  • fuck yess!!!!! FRANK ZAPPA!!!!!!!!

  • Frank was so great ^_^

  • Of all the squares back in the day, Steve Allen was cool!

  • you cant even speak english, youre the one who lives in the trailer park. zappa is the man, he has more talent then you'll ever have and is probably the smartest guitarist of his century. so go fuck yourself you little skidbilly

  • @jesusjerkoffisgod you fucking idiot

  • @jesusjerkoffisgod i take it from your name and comments that you jerk off to the bible with a screwdriver up your ass?? you ARE a Frank Zappa song!!

  • i never imagined i'd see Zappa playing a bike, youtube is amazing but i agree that we all should be more friendly

  • Zappa playing a bicycle. Only a sign of things yet to come.....

  • How brave was he to do this at such a narrow minded guarded time in American society...definately an outsider..thanks

  • This goes right along with the experimental music of the time--so he was not an outsider. And look, he's on TV. They couldn't do that now. They'd have to have some 'American Idol' singer.

  • @pixiewilson42 as "cool' as everyone thinks things are today and themselves... it's still sooooo easy to "freak" people out ! dont take much. if you draw cartoons you'd have an idea .

  • @pixiewilson42 Especially with Steve Allen for God's sake. He was the embodiment of the arrogant, close minded, sick conservatism of the 50's. Utterly disgusting man.

  • @pixiewilson42 Plz stop making every video on youtube a case to complain about something...

  • youtube has become so unfriendly. Lighten up people.

  • YouTube rox

  • Two great showman....

  • I bet that every kid who saw that show went on banging on their bicycles!

  • This is great man. 5 stars

  • And yes I apologise for bringing this conversation back on a frank zappa youtube vid. Canada and America have nothing to do with frank in this particular video.

So I will just enjoy Zappa. That is all.

  • Man, if Frank was alive to hear this garbage. How dare you people spew you selfish and misguided opinions here. Do Frank Zappas memory a service and fuck off, choose a proper forum or step out into the daylight to voice your opinions where you will hopefully be bitch slapped by someone with some common sense.

  • Oh wheesht guys, I'm listenin to the music!

  • @seniorxduck France would be the land of goose stepping fascists instead of the land of wine swigging cheese eaters if it wasn't for the USA. What that has to do with the genius of Zappa, I'm not sure.

  • @lynnwoodsmeghead I partly disagree - you should say if it wasnt usa, uk and allies, france would be covered with vodka drinking barbarians from the east

  • The US would still be a British colony if it wasn´t fro the french (according to that line of reasoning). Besides, everybody knows the nazis were really beaten at the east front by the soviets.

That show conductor is really tall, man.

  • don't feed the troll

  • Sound advice. Acknowledged.

  • @fruhko

YES..I SAY THE SAME THING..DONT FEED TROLLS.

  • @fruhko - Positively! Don't walk into its trap. Don't feed the ignorance & hatred....It craves attention... Let It Starve/Atrophy from lack of 'feeding.' Really want to send a statement? Then do it with silence (they just hate that!). NOW BACK TO THE GENIUS OF ZAPPA!

  • "Oh, the time has come the Walrus said to speak of other things" - like, oh, I don't know? How about FRANK ZAPPA AND STEVE ALLEN, you nationalist clowns! Don't you realize that as borders are blurred by such amazing things as the internet, your small-thinking no longer has any relevance to the rest of us "citizens of the third planet from the sun"? If where I was born really matters to you, check my profile. Rock on, Frank & Steve! And love to all my fellow citizens!

  • Now I realize why I am nutz, these are two of the most influential people in my life.

  • Steve was more in touch with Zappa's contemporary approach than I expected. Gotta love that gong when Steve blows into the bike handle.

  • Ya. he even plays his nose :D

  • @xXxXkillerqueenXxXx

Canada SUCKS! You're going to say Frank Zappa was Canadian? eh! No you a-holes gave us Michael Bublé, Brian Adams & chest pounding over dramatic & rated Celien Deion and her pedophile manager gambleholic husband. Every Canadian with talent leaves Canada if they can for USA. LOL!

Canada is not even a Country. You have less people than California. One butt hole end of Crap-ada still worships the Queen of England, the other butt hole end are French speaking ass holes.

  • You are an over dramatic douche bag I never said frank zappa was Canadian hes greek arab french and italian and with a population the size of the states i hope you guys would can contributed to society your fair share. And it doesn't matter with our free health care system we probably get to use more of those health care inventions than you guys do. You guys are capitalist money hungry society and care more about making the next dollar than you do about the well being of your people.

  • @xXxXkillerqueenXxXx

Ahaa did I hurt your little feelings. I am sorry bitch. Save your jealousy and Nanook of the north hinterland sensibility. If it was not for America you would be no where. Our Econ is in the toilet now but will come back. NAFTA was a windfall for you UNGRATEFUL dip shit. Canada is like our retarded cosions to the North. Go F your self punk. We should do like the South Park movie and "BOMB CANADA". I am SICK SICK SICK of you little shits whining about America. FUCK OFF!

  • @geeflyboy

hahahahahahahaha bomb canada? typical american sentiment. While south park is awesome, YOUR an idiot, and pretty ignorant too, which also just proves your american. We may be small but at least we aren';t brimming with morons out the asshole.

I have a good idea, how about you look up worldwide health care and see what place YOUR country is compared to canadas? If that doesn;t answer your question, enough said............

  • @munkierunner

Next time you accuse someone of being an idiot, you might want to spell "you're" correctly. Just sayin'.

  • @taylorkaplan Ah yes of course, how could I possibly forget that it is you're and not your, when referring to one as an "idiot". If only I had tried just a little harder in english class, then this grave error could have been rectified. I thank you for your esteemed correction of my most gravest of possible errors. While I agree that spelling and proper english is a good thing, come on.....was that worth a comment on YOUR part?

  • Munkierunner: "...I agree that spelling and proper english is a good thing."

Normally, it's a good thing. But, it's a REALLY good thing (and gives you more credibility) if you happen to be calling someone an idiot.

  • @taylorkaplan

I could see if maybe I spelled the word idiot wrong, or something like that ya sure, then spelling would be a necessity, BUT not a mix up between "your" and "you"re". You"re just stretching to find something wrong. Also so my small grammatical error was actually more important to you then some guy saying canada should be bombed?

    I see..............

  • hahahah you're delusional and unstable, I'm glad you're not Canadian you'd be an embarrassment with your incoherent jabble and nonsense have some self control. You defensive jackass.

  • @geeflyboy i live in canada offended by americans saying stuff about usand our health care .insurance companies dont run our hospitals. we dont throw poor people into taxis and dump them in the gutter to die.

everytime something could come along that could make your country a better place some buisness man or politician says its "unamerican" or "unchristian" and then the people whom it could help most for example the poor or needy get convinced its wrong!

    its really sad.

  • @gmcjetpilot

What do you mean Canada is not a country? So did you suck at geography and history too? I love how you so subtley mention Celine Dions pedophile gambler manager/husband, you think america doesn';t have a SHIT load of pedophiles and gambleholics? YUP

There are TONS of countries with small populations. Why does that matter? Or are you really stretching that far for something negative to say? YUP

I laugh at your statements, you immature internet warrior you. Way to BE.

  • I think what he ment was that its just not a real country... its kind of like america's hat

  • @CosmikDebrisCC

That's funny, by that reasoning, The US is Canada's trousers since Canada has no borders to the North.

  • En sak röv hål, Gud är Gud,

    du javla fitta

    fan ta dig

  • Frank is God

  • Does that make Dweezil Jesus?

  • hehehehehehe!!!

    :D

    Why not!

    Love em all.

    God Bless the Zappas.

    God I miss Frank.

  • Steve reminds me of Dave.

    Take your pick

  • Steve Allen did two albums with Jack Kerouac who opened the door for FZ and others.

The guy was great as can be seen by even giving Frank a stage to perform on.

  • Wow, Steve Allen was kind of a dick!

  • amazing

  • i wonder if he knew that he was going to be a musical genious...

  • he obviously already was...

  • jeez, there's some real childish and idiotic comments attached to this video.

  • The comments on this video are amazing. It's a pretty inoffensive video typical of when shows have interesting guests. Yet it seems everyone is picking up on some huge hostility like they were throwing punches or something. Such a simple video getting everyone so riled up. Calm down.

  • this is hilarious!

  • No reason for insults. I know of two well known artists that did not indulge in the mixtures of the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's.

One was Frank Z....the other was, Ted N. also known as Ted the Sledge. Sorry, folks, but not all musicians did drugs :)

  • I respect musicians who are naturally abstract without drugs.

  • I also respect musicians who are naturally abstract and enjoy certain substances...

  • Why is the presentator a fucking cunt ?

  • Haha, Steve Allen can't play a bicycle.

  • Steve Allen was a simpleton.

  • Hysterical - two of the greatest minds ever in show business.

  • one of the best progresive musician on the world. yes you understand me
