I took one listen and this is by far the most smokin fiddle playin I've ever heard. Wish I was alive when these guys were playin out, I was born late :( Thank god recordings are forever!
I have this song on my LP, "Hear The Whistles Blow: Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs Sing Songs of Rivers and Rails. This has to be one of my favorite versions of this song.
Most bluegrass festivals have a rule where contestants cannot play either "Orange Blossom Special" or "Duelling Banjos" because both are such crowd favorites it starts fights over whose was best.
You have to play it meloic to get all the notes on the banjo Earl doesn't do that. It is played on the fiddle here But you must not have heard Carl Jackson or any of the banjo picker's play this song. So you don't know .Hell yes it would have been great to hear Earl (whom I love by the way even played live on their TV show out of W.VA with them. play this song..
Dear trailertaskforce: I have been to Sparta many times! My grandparents lived there many years. My grandfather was Dr. CB Roberts, a country doctor who made housecalls. They lived on Bockman Way. Two famous Spartans: Lester and my grandfather.
This was the theme song for Dempsey Hovlands World Famous professional basketball team.Women played against men 1949-1977 and won 80 % of games. My dad owned the team , my mom played. contact me at erinhovland@yahoo.com
Tight! You can feel the rhythm of the rails and hear the engines chugging, even the bells. Creative masterpiece played by virtuosos. Thanks for sharing.
That is the absolute BEST version of the Orange Blossom Special I have ever heard ... It has always been one of my favorites. Nobody played bluegrass like Flatt & Scruggs. I believe they were the tightest band ever. Just perfect!! Thanx for posting ...
@olehoundog1: Thanks for the comment... I finally found a great recording at the Appalachian Archives at ETSU. but appreciate your comment... I will have to find that boxed set.. :-)
Doesnt get any cleaner than this Paul Warren version. Fantastic. The group doesnt gunk up this timeless treasure w/hoopala or theatrics, just pure 100% product. No extras. Magical performance. I doubt any of them could even read music. Doesnt matter. Atcs like this are, unfortunately, gone forever. The pureest form of bluegrass, strings only and no electrified instruments.
Great video--Can B/G get any better.
