Not to mention, there will never be such a simple technology with the ability to transport us anywhere and everywhere. Books need no electricity, no battery, no LCD or eInk (although the hallway light, a flashlight, or candles have been known to come in handy). They need no flash or java plugins. The need no expensive gadgetry of any kind.
Yet...BOOKS allow our imaginations to soar....for hours at a time.....worlds evolve in an instant, and live in our minds...forever ....where ever we are...
Every new technology, there is this old refrain.."________will be the end of books!" First it was microfiche/microfilm, then CDrom, then DVDs, then the internet....now its eBooks. Look, there will always be a need for each of these different medium...Books will not be replaced. There is just nothing like the tactile experience, the touch and feel, smell and sight of paper, the ability to write notes in the margins, this can not be replaced with an ereader... I LOVE my NOOKTABLET!! AND my books.
Well, I personally think we need books for hundreds of thousands of years to come. But we cannot ignore the eventual passage of time and the advancement of technology over the years. Man, this only complicates things...
books will always be the true knowledge-seeker's tool and just as the previous viewer stated below internet is not free so how could digital take over?
digital will never take over books basically because of what point the previous viewer stated below and that is that everybody can't afford internet so therefore books will always be the knowledge-seekers best tool.
Our soldiers have even helped to hide knowledge of ancient history that even was about us in Iraq when they supported the destruction of their libraries and ancient document places! I see you're no different.
It's a communist thought and a plan to manipulate, pervert, delete, and deny knowledge and info that Americans have the RIGHT too and especially when I don't see a traitor giving poor people an internet or even food! Books can't be done like digital can. Even Okla website has hidden toxic waste pages that is most likely going to kill us since there is no place to get rid of it! Cease and desist SATAN workers!
Of course they must exist! The fucking question itself is ridiculous. I am not going to read any book on a kindle or nook. Its a tactile sensory experience using your mind, your eyes and your hands and digital objects are cold and non personal.
@flickerman68 Huh, I have to 100% disagree. The digitizing of books is one of the best things of the digital era. Because a reader can store SO MANY books (thousands), I can easily read a book anywhere I want. No more lugging around a 1 or 2 pound book on the train and having to worry about tearing pages or fraying edges. Additionally, the digitizing of so many books has allowed new authors to break out more easily by forgoing a big publisher and directly publishing online.
@flickerman68 I'm not saying that physical books should disappear. I love the touch and smell of a physical book. But, for me, it simply doesn't make ANY sense to have a physical copy of every book I'm ever going to read. Only very special books (The Lord of the Rings, Calvin and Hobbes) deserve a place on my bookshelf.
It explains how books are important in our lives.
