Hanoi is a great city when you travel and wanna look at beautiful places around it. But when it comes to deal with the locals, especially if you're vietnamese or viet kieu, be prepared to deal with their bad attitude and uneducated manners. And the rules for Pedestrians to cross the streets: Slowly, never run or jump (back or forward), never ever turn around and go back. The motocycle estimate your way and adjust their speed to it.
I lived in Hanoi for seven months and its not as bad as its shown in the video. Or better, the video is absolutely realistic, BUT there are traffic signs and stop signs and so on and there is also a certain rulesystem to the traffic. If you are on a motocycle its a lot easier to get through Ha Noi.

It's not as bad as you make out, there is a technique (as crazy as it seems), you just walk slowly and don't hesitate and everyone goes around you. The problems start when you hesitate and are indecisive.

I just returned from Vietnam in November and I can attest to the fear that virtually everyone has when attempting to cross the street in this city. But all is not lost. I was in Hue, Hoi An and Saigon and it was relatively safe. Saigon, which has 3 times the traffic, was safe. At least there, the people stopped when the traffic light turned red. This is not a Vietnamese issue. This is a city issue that needs to be corrected A.S.A.P. The people here are lawless.

When I was in VN that was the craziest driving I had ever seen. 10 years ago it was mostly Bicycles. That was the most amazing country I have ever traveled to. More friendly than I expected. I went there worried being an American, but the people were more friendly than I had ever experienced. Wish I can go back!

I went to visit Ha Noi and I loved it! The people were so gracious and fun. I was very proud the first time I crossed the street without a Vn-ese escort! The trick is to walk slowly so they can see you and avoid you. No one wants to hit you and break their motorbike! hihi.

The traffic was like that in Saigon....there were traffic lights but I don't think anyone paid any notice. I've been warned not to take the "green light" at pedestrian crossings for granted. Well I survived. And I'm going back in March next year for more !

It was Hanoi in 2004. Nowadays, Hanoi's traffic may be not that bad ^^. Many traffic lights have been added. Some new streets also have been built or rebuilt, etc... Of course it's can't be good. Recently, An american professor who came here to take part in some projects to improve traffic conditions in Hanoi was dead because of being crashed by a mopeds when crossing a street. =.= . However, I think it will become better and better. :).
First thing to do when you are enough self confident is to cross the street without looking the drivers. Just look on the other side and then all the motobikes drivers take the responsability to slow down and let you go.

When I was in VN that was the craziest driving I had ever seen. 10 years ago it was mostly Bicycles. That was the most amazing country I have ever traveled to. More friendly than I expected. I went there worried being an American, but the people were more friendly than I had ever experienced. Wish I can go back!

I went to visit Ha Noi and I loved it! The people were so gracious and fun. I was very proud the first time I crossed the street without a Vn-ese escort! The trick is to walk slowly so they can see you and avoid you. No one wants to hit you and break their motorbike! hihi.

The traffic was like that in Saigon....there were traffic lights but I don't think anyone paid any notice. I've been warned not to take the "green light" at pedestrian crossings for granted. Well I survived. And I'm going back in March next year for more !

It was Hanoi in 2004. Nowadays, Hanoi's traffic may be not that bad ^^. Many traffic lights have been added. Some new streets also have been built or rebuilt, etc... Of course it's can't be good. Recently, An american professor who came here to take part in some projects to improve traffic conditions in Hanoi was dead because of being crashed by a mopeds when crossing a street. =.= . However, I think it will become better and better. :).
