In one of his first songs, "Drop Me Off in Harlem, " Duke compares Harlem to heaven. And he was consistent with that idea. Heaven = harlem, an ideal cross section of free and loving human beings, cherishing each moment, each sweet, pretty and sensuous thing, the laughs, the sheer beauty. Duke was no Dante. He was Chaucer.
Perfect diction, a perfectly radiant voice. expressing the very soul of Ellington himself, and people nitpick and criticize? The melodies, the harmonies, the words, the ensemble sound are the essence of Ellington. If this isn't seen as the masterpiece it is, best it not be on youtube. Alice "gets" it, she gets Duke, who was no Promethean visionary like Coltrane but a being who celebrated life, every flower, every pretty thing, every moment of God's incarnate, sensuous, gracious feast.
Manchmal fällt mir gar kein vernünftiger Text mehr ein. Ich will mich ja nicht immer wiederholen. Dennoch: auch das wieder eine wunderbare Aufnahme von der von mir außerordentlich geschätzten Alice Babs!
Wow, what an amazing, amazing voice!!! And Johnny Hodges, what a sound!!!

I think her voice is fine but I'm not a fan of how she's pronouncing things...

@DrBoomy
I agree. She is Swedish and from Stockholm and the "Stockholmish" accent is often very strong and clear.
