I swear, this beer tastes different every time I have one... The first 6 pack I ever bought tasted like a black IPA, the next like a sickly sweet porter, and the next like a roasty toasty dry nutty porter.
Apparently even the alcohol content of this beer has fluctuated over the years... it just can't make up it's mind about what it wants to be, you know? To the beer, I say "meh"
I think this beer was intended to fool the senses. Actually a perfect choice for a blindfold review. I was even fooled when I bought it. I thought it was a stout. Only realized it said 'porter' after I poured it.
You think the Gonzo Porter is really hoppy like an IPA? Wow, funny how your mind can play tricks on you. I think you got that in your head from the smell. I don't think that beer is particularly hoppy at all. It is definitely not like an IPA.
its says its hoppy on the bottle, so saying it is hoppy was ok, but i can't believe i missed the cofee notes. its so not a ipa at all...it was only like the second time i had a beer like that, so it doesn't surprise me i was that far off. i would love to revisit that beer.
Gonzo Imperial Porter is EXTREMELY hoppy when it's fresh, I have found that the flavor varies every time I buy it. Sometimes it's a roasty toasty porter with just a hint of hops in the background, other times it tastes like a REALLY serious IPA/Barleywine with some roasted flavors.
All depends how recently it was brewed, it's not a fast selling beer and hop oils fade with age.
Great idea Jay. I like some of the Flying Dog beer, but I share your feelings on this one. It isn't a bad beer, it's just not what you would expect in this style. Your site looks good. Cheers.
hey thanks, and thanks for checking out the site. yeah i was real surprised by this one. i had no characteristics of a porter. and again it wasn't bad, it just wasn't anything special either.
well it was real hoppy like a ipa. and it wasn't coffee or chocolatety to make me think porter, so thats what threw me off. i actually got no flavors or smell at all except hoppiness. your have to try it yourself to see for yourself. but it was a decent beer. the ingredients only list multiple hops, and roasted malts, which i didn't taste at all.
yeah i know it was lost coast.. .what did i say??? i knew i made a mistake after... they make a lot of good beers. i will be reviewing there beers soon enough. but thanks for watching. check out my website. i didn't get beer style right, but i was able to recognize the hops. so i wasn't completly wrong... but thats what made that review fun.
You won't be disappointed with any of their beers.
Blind folded with a beer I've never tries I probably would have made the same mistake. You should do more reviews like this and influence viewers to do the same.
thanks. i didn't do so well, but it was a beer style i never had. i was at least able to point out it was very hoppy, and this beer is loaded with different hops according to website. be sure to view my new website as well.
It's interesting to see what you do get from it. I wonder how important knowing the sytle is on what we expect to taste? Beers like this and Great Divide Yeti are difficult ones because of the hops.

Interesting experiment. That beer is #1 on my to try list.

well tell me what you think when you do...

I wouldn't consider something less than 9% ABV an "imperial" - I don't know why the brewery is using that word on a 7-something %.
You should title the video "the mystery beer" that way it's as much of a mystery to the audience as it was to you.
I'm not sure how a porter could be mistaken for an IPA. IPAs tend to be tart and citrusy, porters are roasty. Maybe I'll try it sometime.

An Imperial of anything is going to have a lot of hops in which the roasted malt was buried, good review.
BTW it's "Lost Coast" Brewing and they have a pretty good IPA called Indica, although my fav from them is their 8 Ball Stout.
