The biggest point of acheivements is to get the player to play the game in a way they might not otherwise do; to force them to try a situation that does not normally present itself as an option. You mentioned killing an opponent with a taunt. Imagine the bragging rights one could claim if you got good enough at that to do it reliably. All any acheivement requires is time and effort, and your swiftness to blowoff the ligitimate method does, as has been said, say a great deal about your character.

Actually, of the few things I did explain, that was one of them: bragging rights. It's the same as with a no scope or taking a heavy down with a scout, just an order of magnitude more difficult. They are all difficult, often impractical, and the end result of each can be acheived more efficiently. It is the difficulty that draws some people to put in long frustrating hours toward an apparently pointless goal.

As for helping your team, let's face it, bragging rights are exclusively individual.
