its really sad how much work and effort these groups have to continually go through to keep the last of these engines alive!!! Such an important part of American history and such beautiful machines! I'm glad the NS is going to reopen their Steam Program, so important to keep these engines running! I really hope to see some engines like the N&W 611 back in action someday. If you can support the different organizations that maintain and restore these engines please do and if you already do thanks
Steam engines are like babies we love them we care for them they let us know when the are happy or sad and in my opinion each and every steam engine diserves a chance to share its story and be happy one more because that is better for them and for us besides like us i dont think they are happy with being stored away or sitting idle in a museum. What would they give to be out on the iron one more time. Long live steam and the men abd women who keep them with us.
@PetersTrainz101 Well you will have to wait at least another 15 years. The National Railway Museum sold the #261 to Friends of the 261 and it is being rebuilt right now to run again. Hopefully it will be steaming down the rails again by Fall of 2011. Great news about a Lionel version. I need an N Scale version, with sound please
I guess this should be changed now to "WELCOME BACK #261 - The Next 15 Years". It was announced on May 8, 2010 that the Friends of the 261 bought the #261 from the National Railway Museum in Green Bay. The intent is to rebuild the #261 and run it again in excursion service. GREAT NEWS !!!
@trainlover657 true but in the case of this locomotive im angry, she is one of the "supermodels" of steam and now shes going away, i didnt mean to offend you. . .
@trainlover657 yes i no. I just look at it like this. If she's put in static display then that's one less steam locomotive running the rails, I know is will cost tons to overhaul but im still sadened.
sad of the lose. I am crying, something so great...gone. for a time... why don't they gain money buy it from the musuem, give it credit and put it on its own term?
It really is a shame to lose this engine. If more and more steam engines go out of service, there will be no more mainline excursions. I hope the Milwaukee Road 261 will steam again one day.
Thanks Keith for this wonderful tribute to the 261. Ya its sad to see her go but like you said and we have all been thinking when one door closes another opens. Thanks for the Memories 261 you will be missed by all who rode and saw you travel down the rails over the years.
Great shots of the 261 doing what she does best, pulling trains. Too bad she is now going to be standing idle in Green Bay. Thanks for the ride 261! Had a blast.

but still, overhauling an engine like 261 is the equivalint to rebuilding an apartment complex

@PRRK4Lover I am about tired of NRM Myself. #261, #611, #1218, and all the other steamers need to be free to run like they were built to do.

@TVRM610 they will. just wait, they wiill be preserved in museums as always and they will be back sooner or later.

To me, 261's whistle was the sound of steam's voice.
I'll miss her.
