Bruce, thanks a bunch for posting these up. I started getting serious about canoeing two years ago and I've watched your videos for pointers and they've been quite helpful!
Not too clear with the explain. he's also ruddering a bit. i guess so we can see better the technique. the j could be explained more simply i think, but the guy can paddle a boat, thats clear.
@OgGz1 Know anything about power transfer? I seem to remember anything over the shoulder whilst kneeling can reduce J-stroke power. Proved on an Ergo Machine contraption I believe.

@Zelda123Zelda123 How do you kno? It looks like a Real canoe and it looks alot like its in the water. and why did u have to say it anyways? Nobody really cares about the boat in the water.
Are you racing that canoe? If not, why not use a more leisurely stroke (less zig-zag) and simply alternate sides of canoe on each (or every other) stroke? This should require only minimal course corrections on rarer occasions.
1 sec ago Im guess he's not racing this canoe. Its important not to switch sides while padlling because in white water you dont want to be letting go of the paddle what-so-ever. The last thing you need to to is drop the paddle in rushing water while trying to switch paddle sides. Its also less efficient. If you can master the J stroke you wont "zig-zag" at all
Have you ever paddled a true white-water canoe? They weren't designed for flat water. No keel, no prominent keel-line to help the canoe track and tracking. Flat water boats are designed for tracking. White-water boats are designed with a rounded bottom for maneuvering. You don't want tracking while dancing your way through a rock-garden.
Ergo,no matter how good you are there will always be a little zig-zagging when paddling a strictly white-water canoe on flat water.
I just watched the video again because I didn't see the end before. With all due respect, your J-stroke is very flawed. In fact, you are demonstrating how it should NOT be done. I mean no offense by that. Again, you should not zig-zag at all when you do a proper J-stroke regardless of whether you are using long or short strokes. In fact, I would find it difficult to get the zig-zagging you are getting. I think your problem is in your transition phase of the stroke. Best.
Actually, the J-stroke, when done properly, should never make you zig-zag even if you are doing long powerful strokes. In fact, none of the basic strokes should cause zig-zagging ever. If they are, something is wrong with your technique. A properly done J-stroke does not put you back on course. It never takes you off course! You should not have to use short strokes to go perfectly straight although short strokes can be more efficient depending on the circumstances.
It's awesome to watch a boat like that go straight. I'm always blaming my lack of control on the hull design, while you're proving I just need to be a better paddler.
For a different perspective (literally) on using the J, do a YouTube search on "ctcboater" and look for Solo Canoe Technique: Paddling in a straight line.
I don't know the model but I think it's made by Mohawk.
Unless you plan on doing tandem whitewater I'd get another boat, one meant for calmer waters. Otherwise you two will wind up with a lot of sore muscles just try to keep it tracking a stright line.

HOW to do a Jstroke without spilling your beer, dropping your fishing pole in the water whilst throwing beads at that hottie on the river!

do you use the gunwale as a fulcrum for the pry at the end of the stroke
LulJam 2 years ago
No, but, the warp coils overload above 102% reactor capacity, therefore you should disable external inertial dampners before engagement.

That would be an Esquif Nitro, but it's a solo boat... the Esquif Blast is more or less this boat but extended for tandem use.
