Hermann (Arminius) has been the greatest traitor in the history of the ancient world. He didn’t fight against us for the freedom of his people, also because at that time the germans were not a people, but only because Segestae, friend of the Romans didn’t want to give him his daughter Tusnelda. So Arminius attacked the three legions in a ambush for revenge. It has been the german nationalism in the XIX century to glorify Hermann considering him a Hero.
and i doubt pausing a battle actually happened, although its every Generals Dream. But I just choose not to, makes it feel more real, having to act quick and worry later, but good show either way
Of course Rome lost battles, so has every Empire but Rome always bounced back from defeats. Romes demise was due to internal rot more than military defeats. In my opinion the Roman Empire had the most conflicts and enemys of any Empire in history and i am amazed it lasted as long as it did.
heheh when i played this the berzerkers massacred my archers and my general first...then toghether with the rest of the germans they slaughtered the rest of my troops....i only got one gruop of hastati out alive and under fire from archers....thinking i could lose them in the forest i ran in...only to end up in the middle of another ambush ...3 axemen gruops hacked em to bits....i had something like 12 men remaining at the end...
And how do you know that? It's very hard to retrace your family history back 100 or even 300 years back, let alone 2000. I may be a little cynical but I was just wondering
vjd55 you sound like a christian which is just funny in itself.........and also..........you might wanna check your sources on what time this battle happened........it wasn't all one day.......hence why this battle is hard to depict.......personally i think they did a rather decent job......
The battle with the brutii versus Parthia, i thought it was Carrhae that also is REALLY tough, I just cant defeat them there because those cataphracts charge into my legions killing everyone... :|
I prefer Germanians since theyre barbarians and and they guerrila tactics , just get 3 units of axemen and 5 of barbarian javelins and hide them in a forest, if Julii pass by you can massacre them from the forests :P. I love barbarians for theyre crudeness , lawlesness and disorder.
yeah i like barbarians to, but they lack sone walls, artillary, and pikemen. :( thats why i normally play as greece, macedon, or the selucids... Thrace is a good mixture but they have weaker troops than other greeks... (yes i can play as macedon & Thrace :P)
@Legolasas26 i thought that too but when i played as them i was slightly disappointed to see phalanx-like infantry, since for some reason i SUCk at using phalanx's lol
When I played this battle I Fatally underestimated the amount of Barbarians. I managed to beat the first german army and made a run for the fort only to get ambushed again and whipped out. In the end I managed to get 96 soldiers into the fort.
Hey RomanGladius...FUCK YOU Arminius was German but when he was young the Romans took him into their army. Everything he did, he did to save his kinsmen, that doesnt sound like a traitor.
when i did this historical battle i lost and i realised what a stupid general i was, i head on atked my calvary kepy my inf going on, and i made it but my gerneral was ded and so was my archers.
I understand Armlight9 hates Romans even if I don't understand why. But I have a question: why in Germany you germans still use roman laws? If I remember well, Mr. A. Hitler & company began to use the laws of ancient germans. The result was what we know very well. If you Germans hate Romans, you must be coherent please! Return to the 'civilization' of your ancestors and after we will see what you will be able to do. Your Hermann was a Roman officer, so he was a traitor even if you dislike this.
you have to understand 2000 years ago there was no united germany. Germans didnt even call themselve germans back then. They were divided tribes. Free.Minding only their own business. Had different believes. Yet some german tribes were allies with the Romans and embraced roman way of living while others remained mortal enemies. But back then their greatest enemy of a german was another german. It nearly took a millenia till difference could be put aside and a more united germany could be formed.
We are not using Roman laws...but Ancient Creek ones,French and Ancient germanic and Medievel laws from the codey Salicus...as well as laws of the German empires and post WW2 Laws...what so called "Roman" laws are you reffering to?Those Laws the Romans adopted from creece and Persia earlier?
@Romangladius Just that you know, Germans dont hate Roman (Italian) people at all. That was 2000 years ago, man! And then you should know that Hermann/Arminius was not a traitor at all. Yes, he was cooperating with the Roman Empire, but in the end he was the one who helped his people (the german tribes). He united the tribes and he was able to prepare the biggest ambush in Roman history because the Roman people trusted him. So, he was kind of a traitor. Like a doubleagent.
Rome Total War is a great game, but this is one of its crappier historical battles. This battle was actually fought in much denser forest, and the Germanic tribes waited until night fell to begin the attacks.
And re: the poster who knocks Arminius for killing women and children... uh, what did the Romans do at Avaricum some 45 years earlier? I have neither love nor hate for Rome, but let's be fair here. Varus and his legions suffered for the Empire's sins.
I have been beating the Germans right, left and centre with the Julii faction and I bloody love it, especially when the spearmen take to their heels. I've beaten them in thicker forests than the one shown here not least of all because they try to attack me all the time so I always get to choose the terrain and my defensive deployment. I also make certain that none of their bloody chosen archers ever leave the field alive.
why don't you work with groups? If you ctrl+select units, and press G you have a group. You'll only have to press keys like "1"2", "3" and so on to select the group in question. Saves you a lot of trouble with mousing and selecting and dragging. This is handy in the thick of the fight where every split second may count.
I'm German, and Arminius was a Cheruskan Chieftan named "Hermann" which means nothing but "Armyleader" in old Germanic. He had been taken hostage as a child and taken to Rome. The Romans wanted his father not to lean up against Rome. Arminius grew up in Rome and became a Roman commander never forgetting what has happened in the past. When he was sent to Germania as an Officer under varus he finally took revenge. A few yrs. later he was murdered by jealous German Chieftans.
yeah I barely beat it on easy. I mean if they actually gave you time it would be easy but that damn timer always makes you rush which causes you to be ambushed mercilessly
I think kids shouldn't discuss politics or history. They just spit insults at eachother. Rome was successful because they had diciplined and organized armies, and the Gaulish armies were hordes of 100,000's of men who fell right into the roman's hands every time.
but where the romans(scipio) ally with those who attacked them? because they(scipio) don't even attack the general when they had a chance(that was in the beginning)
How do you think the romans created their empire? The Romans destroyed the culture of the territories that they conquered, that included art and science. The roads were invented by the celts, the romans stole technology from other nations and made it look like their own. The only Roman advance was in the field of military science! Rome was an evil despicable empire!
Arminius if i don't recall wrong, was working with roman as officer and there he learned the way romans act in battle. After that he betrayed them and kill them all in a deadly trap hiding in the bush as a snake and not in an open field. he killed hundreds of woman and children not only the legions....i wouldn't call him a hero. ;)
agreed this one is still hard i just attacked the germans on one side and defeated them with my entire army and then attacked the other side at the beginning of the battle
ye it was slaughter the romans had around 20,000- 25,0000 ad the germans 18,000-20,000 and the romans lost around 20000, the germans took very little casualties.
actually thats false. the romans had less than 18,000 [15,000 legionnaires]. the germans had over 40,000. Also the romans inflicted horrendus casualties on the germans.
if varus wasnt defeated at teutoburger wald today's germany would've been much smaller, the raids of the anglo-saxons woudnt've been in britannia and england wouldnt even existed!!
I played it on 1.3 and never knew Berserkers had 3 hp in 1.3. (2 in 1.5)
I thought I sucked until I beat this with very hard on the first try as soon as I patched to 1.5. :(
Those who want real challenges should try it on 1.3. (not 1.0. no berserker mode in 1.0)

Quinctilius Varus is a stain in the pride of 1st century Romans.
3 legions: the 17th, 18th, and 19th around 15,000 men slaughtered because of his foolishness
