  • My dad was on the Duke of York, and i have his medals from the 2nd world war, and a postcard taken in Tokio bay 1939.

  • Hi Fred

Thank you fof making this video. My father Fred Reader was on the Duke of York and it's very interesting to hear your memories of the Battle of the North Cape and your memories of life on that ship. I've read many accounts of the Battle but none as interesting as your first hand account.

    Many thanks.

Hi, I agree with you, however that is all that we had available at the time.

We have recorded more videos since and used improved sound equipment.

Glad that you have enjoyed watching.

Fred is still fit and healthy at 92 yrs young.

    Best Wishes,

    Ron (Fred's son-in-law).

  • @vonskrappes A belated 92nd Happy Birthday to Fred. Keep the flag flying. Look forward to the next videos.

  • At school we had a physics teacher who'd been a RN radar technician on the Arctic convoys. Some would try to get him reminiscing about his experiences just to avoid studying because. once started, he could go on for hours, but I was genuinely interested in his stories for their own sake. He was at the Battle of North Cape. We are fast losing a generation who lived through times we are fortunate to have avoided. I have the utmost respect for what they did. We forget history at our peril.

  • von... this is oral history at it's finest level... what a man Fred is.. and what a generation that fought for us and gave us this modern world so full of ease and wealth. If Fred is still alive please give him my regards and thanks for the world I have been able to live in

  • just a postscript. The bell of the DOY was subsequently donated to the Duke of York School that I attended in the 1960s The school was an exclusive all boys boarding school located in the Ngong Hills area SW of Nairobi Kenya. located outside the chapel and called us to chapel every day. We were very proud of the bell..

  • Hi,

I find this really interesting thanks Fre4d. My father was on the ship from 1943 the sinking of the Scharmost and also went to Sydney. Does Fred remember Kenneth Graham John he was in the engine room?. Sadly he passed away in 1998. Keep up the good work. Best Wishes Louise

  • Loved the video.

I would loved to of heard more.

Both my Grandfathers, all my Uncles and my Father served in the Royal Navy during the war. Dad was on the Malta convoy.

    God bless them all.

  • Hi Fred,

I plan to record a few more videos of Fred Brindleys wartime memories in the next few weeks. Fred recently celebrated his 91st birthday and his memories of WW2 are still very clear.

    Best Wishes,

    Ron (his son-in-law)

  • @vonskrappes l very much look forward to hearing more, but please try to improve the sound quality if you can. At least get a proper external microphone that you can place on a solid surface because built in microphones pick up all the noise of the machine they're in, plus the sound of fingers tapping on it etc. Your father-in-law's memory is clear and deserves similar clarity in the recording.

  • @freddetteperson My Dad Bill Ross died on 1/4/10 84yrs

He was only 18yrs of age in 1943 and was a range finder on HMS DUKE OF YORK.

So many amazing experiences. Miss him.

  • My late father was an officer on HMS Duke of York all through WW2. He was obviously there at the battle of Northcape.

    Brave men all.

  • Very brave men , my pupa done from { scuse my spelling} the clyde , to reykavik , to murmansk, . I think along with others he saw hell , ship sunk keep going he said you could not stop . I always think of him and what he and others did.. brave men.

  • @ILUV74 My Dad told us this too. They couldn't stop to pick up any survivors. They watched as men drowned and could do nothing. It made him weep and me too, just thinking about what these brave men experienced.

  • My grandfather was on the russian convoys aboard the HMS whitehall

  • So was my Grandad, up until 1942.

  • Chap!
