I have also had a transponder fail while on a flight, but my airplane was based in class C... If you call prior to entering and get a special clearance you can still fly in class C with no transponder
You said you flew back with the transponder off and ducked below the charlie airspace? Don't you have to have mode C within the outer ring of C airspace even if you are not inside it?
In class E airspace as I understand it, you need mode A, not sure about mode C though.
Since neither of us knew how to stop mode C, just figured to turn it off since it would have reported us "in C" even though we were below the floor of the outer ring.
Maybe it was just me, but the communication between the pilot and controller seemed more casual then normal. Sounds different then over here, but not that its a bad thing.
nice video. did you get any feedback from maintenance regarding what caused the discrepancy between the mode C broadcast and your indicated alt? Weird to get such a big gap...
Unfortunately have not spoke with the pilot due to the holidays. I will post a reply to your comment so you get notified if I get an answer. I'd be interested myself :-)
You may be right, but you won't beat the price we had to pay for our meal! Zip, zero zilch. Airport had some free coupons which we gracefully accepted for a buffet lunch at the casino in Philadelphia MS. Even the ride to and from the airport was "free".
Even with all that, best view from a restaurant is the runway view, so KBTR would definitely be the choice for me.
Of course Butler PA would cost us a lil more then $100 in LL from MS. :-))
Even with my 800+ hours you can still call me a noob. You would think something as simple to operate like a transponder should be a "no brainer".
I assume you put your transponder on standby? If so, did you get any digital indication of standby or is your transponder like mine where you turn knobs to tune in your squawk?
Your comment, I never knew that service existed for flight following. Good to know for future. More tools in my kit, the better :-))
This happened to me at night, but I decided not to cancel flight following and just made regular altitude reports with the controller. Mind you I was not in class charlie or bravo, I was talking to center but the important thing to me was my location, not necesarily my altitude. Its always nice to have an experienced pilot when stuff like this hits the fan. Inexperienced pilots sometimes get confused with situations that have never happened to them before... I know from experience XD.
Very good job there. Couple of months ago I had radio failure and had to select 7600 myself, class D airspace.

I've heard trapped air pressure causes the altimeter to freeze. That could why you were getting the reading you were getting.
There might have been some blockage there.

While not in the immediate market to replace my9 year old DCs-any PIREPS on potential replacement always appreciated :-)
BeechSundowner 2 years ago
@tehblizz Why's that? I've got some and they're a treat to fly with :)
Bateseh 1 year ago
@Bateseh It's more of a price/value issue and not a quality issue ;) Happy flying!

@tehblizz Haha, Yeah.. then I agree with you! Bit pricey, but well worth it imo. Happy flying!

Great friend you got lol. I do wish her luck for her instrument rating. That will be a big goal for her.

So a transponder problem but I saw you both did a great job. So who was that lady anyways?

Lady is a friend of ours. She is now working on getting her instrument rating.
