This is from the very first version. The 1984 Arcade version that spawned all the other versions. The NES version you're thinking of is a port of this version.
In North America, a lot of games started in the arcades, but were later ported to and became better known in the FC/NES era, because of it being more convienting and easier to find and take home than the arcades.

This theme and the Space Quest theme sound similar to me and I enjoy them both. Maybe this one a little more though.

Woah, there was an stage in Mr. Driller Drill Land called "The hole of Druaga" I didn't know this was actually a game by its own!
