My favourite part of this song is the solo at the end and this version is such a disappointment. That being said, it is great to see the Hip playing such a legendary venue.
Here's some cool info for Hip fans, Gords god father is the former president of the Boston Bruins Harry Sindin! I thought that was pretty cool when I found that out!!
All I can say is that I saw the Hip (first of dozens) in 1985 at the Horseshoe in TO and man, Gord was never going to leave my life after that experience I can assure you.
haha at 0:55 gordie screws up the line he says tragically hip when it's supposed to be fabulously rich. look at his expression after he just shakes his head and finishes the song flawlessly, i can't get enough of the hip
No he didnt screw it up - He sings it with Tragically Hip in the place of fablously rich in all their live concerts...

How tight is that- and kicking ass on SNL no less? I have seen lots and lots of concerts in my life and the TH shows I saw were the best very concerts I've ever seen. The band is so tight, Gord is electrifying, and I just found myself blown away. If you have a chance, please check them out.
I've heard the hip on the radio for so many years. I've never really seen them play live though. One of the most unique, and awesome, bands out there, especially in this video. :)
but their golden heydays were from 89' to 97'.....after that, the classic hip style disappeared and evolved into something else. Still very cool and awsome to experience....but you'll never see the "road apples" or " fully completely" hip ever again.....:(
Stil have yet to see this band live but every live preformance i see makes me wonder what would be more entertaining watching the entire band live or just gordie when hes on stage he looke possessed lol
THIS is why I don't bother with SNL musical guests anymore. Look how simple the stage design is. It looks like it's just some dudes jammin' in the attic. The focus is on the incredible performance. As opposed to now, where every guest perfoms on a set that I guess is supposed to replicate an actual arena-sized concert experience. But, visually, it's always so incredibly overblown that it's really nothing more than a distraction. Even the 'Stones didn't need any visual fluff for their SNL gig.
Its almost like he's a little more subdued for SNL and the national audience. Usually he rambles, curses a bit, and goes all out on stage. He is an entertainer.
He's cute, funny and a good singer too! Hahaha... just watching him is making me laugh hard... what a character lol LMAO Music great and Gordie's performance is a fully great entertainment
rep300 well done. I have often compared the two phases but you're correct...it occured during Night and Day. All said...they can always claim four of the best albums in Canadian music and in mind opinion rock and roll.
Ok, this is so wrong, but Gordie totally reminds me of Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory in this video. WOW. That said, Holy crap! LISTEN to the BAND. This is why the Hip are still the best in my opinion. Four guys who are so tight lead by a complete mad man simmering under the surface.
Awesome, huh? And what's with these comments "sounds flat" ??? Get real you dummies and go back to watching america's got talent. THIS IS THE BEST ROCK BAND IN THE FREAKIN WORLD.
first time he said the lyrics " she said im tragically hip!" live , said it ever since , you can see , hes like .. fuckk lol UNREAL gordie for prime minister
You know what I find awesome about this video. Not only the performance, but the fact that there's 24,981 views on it. And then their second performance "Nautical Disaster" has 24,500 views... Which means that most Hip fans view this video, then go right to the next. You don't see that with many other bands. Way to go!
tite but didnt do justice to what the live venues were like at the time....there is a reason theyre as popular today as then ..the live shows were something else entirely"greatest show youd never remember was the hip back then
@RiRa211 ...except for the fact that he screwed up the first line, while trying to remember a promise to flash his two index fingers together as a signal to his nephew on his eleventh birthday...and the mental "Oh Shit" reaction....
Thanks for posting - great performance! I remember hearing Gord say that he was so focused on remembering to flash the "11" sign for this nephew's 11th birthday (which was that day) that he blew the first line of the song!
That said, except for that 1/2 second "OMG" facial expression you'd never really knew it phased him. What a pro!
@crazkurtz he said it was his nephews 11th birthday and thats why he hold up his two fingers to represent a 11 for him, he was so intent on not forgetting to do that he screwed up the line.
I used to equate Downies onstage antics to those of Mick Jagger. Then I remembered that Jagger was just annoying to watch whereas Downie is both comical and entrancing.
Gord being a spazz is a big part of what we love about The Tragically Hip. Right? It's absolutely engaging to the one listening and watching, and it helps to relay the message he's wanting to get across to us all. Brilliant recording artists all 5 of them are!
Saw them at Art Park this past June. It would have been so awesome if they had played this, one of my all time favorites. I had someone special with me and she would have just loved this song. Lar
One of the best performances I've seen on SNL, silly americans don't know what they're missing!!!
So much better than some of the garbage they've had on SNL in the last few years, a venue like this shows whether a performer/s have any REAL talent, and as always The Hip has it in spades!
This is so fantastic.
