@ajcf1995 University of Southern Mississippi uses them. Otherwise a great question, maybe they don't have the money for the conversion. Have had 2 high school bands ready to "pull the trigger" when the funds they were counting on were cut. So, I want to say the economy has something to do with it, as well as many people who don't like a true snare drum sound.....think they are to wet sounding.
@andreboy10 If that is what Jay wants to do, then fine. I love SU's band and like TnSU's. Jay will likely go into a program that is more orchestral based, that is if he wants to major in music/percussion. By the way, I know people that have played in the bands that you mentioned. Jay has been exposed to HBCU bands and show-style drumming.
@chsneary Not quite correct in the price, $150 will turn a drum into an HV, but if you want a new finish on the drum brings it up to $200 or if it will be a lacquered finish to $250 add $25 -$30 both ways for shipping now you are getting near the $300 mark. Just to clarify, no flaming intended.
alright it's now the summer before his freshman year... what's he gonna play?! also, what corps is he gonna do? you all live in tenn, correct? SCV is in cali... so where is he gonna play?
@minimeiskool We still plan to allow him to audition for SCV at some point when he is older, but still while in high school- probably for the 2013 season, and after a year with a minor corps.
wow. jay is really good. i wish i was as good as him. you think he can come down to hawaii, bring both his marching snares, and teach me personally? i need his help if i want to make it on the drumline in high school
lol u keep defending him so much oldchops just take some criticism once in awhile and sides its really getting to that point where we would like to hear from jay not his dad??? i dont c u in many videos
Over all a great player and very clean. Only one thing is you should keep your right elbow up more it keeps the stick from coming in like a whip and helps keep tap and diddles low and over all i think it make a better sound
He is also "probably" being forced to: 1. eat his veggies 2. go to church 3. go to school 4. do his homework 5. have good hygiene 6. get haircuts, well I guess not, LOL! 7. go to bed by 10 pm on school nights 8. get off the XBox if homework isn't done 9. be respectful, especially to adults 10. dress appropriately Well, I've got to go now. I have to unchain Jay and get him out of the dungeon so that he can practice percussion. LOL! JK! Thanks for watching!
Most of that is attributed to the weather. We always seem to shoot these vids when it is extremely hot. Jay is facing the sun much of the time as well. And though Jay normally gets a good run-through rather quickly, sometimes he may not be enthusiastic because he dropped a stick or did something in a earlier run-through that was going well. Thanks for the nice comment and for watching!
The marching snare originated in the military. The best snare player should remain perfectly calm and steady, not wild and rambunctious Nick Cannon from the movie Drumline. I'm assuming whoever is teaching this young lad to play is an old-fashioned kind of guy. With all of that being said, Jay is an excellent drummer on the right path. His parents have taught him superb discipline and his instructor certainly seems to be astounding. Good luck.
it would be good, for him to start like carrying a drum for a while (if he isn't aren't already) because, even though snares are usually one of the lighter drums, i had a little trouble and tired very easily. Just a thought :)
Oh Oh! LOL! That is where we were. Most of our vids are shot at the house (if outside in the driveway) or at Bert Ferguson Community Center. Did you see or hear us out there or did you just recognize it from this video? What do you practice there?
cbean2007, Jay still has a year to decide what what he will play in high school. Most likely it will be influenced by what the director needs. Most likely Jay will still be too small for tenors; but, I can see him playing snare during football season and saxophone and some percussion during concert season. But again, it will be up to Jay and the director.
whoa really thanks for pointing out something i can read idiot. i was slimply stating what it looks like. some custom drums use there own hardware so sorry for being sooo aragent. @ hvdrum haha okay i saw the pics on google looks nice
I would like to say, I improved a bit on the original design. I cannot take credit for what Marty and Harvey came up with in all their testing. But I did make improvements and came out with the "Next Generation" . ha ha Thanks R!! Stay cool!
unless there is a school of thought i never heard of but most everybody that ever taught me said that the arms should have a downward angle towards the drum. it was kinda angled up.
I don't want to advertise on Jay's video....just do a search on Facebook for HV Drums and join the open group. It has pictures of all the drums that I've done. Or Google HV Drums to get to my website. Now Jay...let's get back to the show...very enjoyable!!! Take Care !!!
Not a problem Val! The drum looks and sounds much better than promised. Your work is excellent and Jay loves the drum. Be sure to check out the solo that we plan on posting next week- Jay is really going to put some notes on that drum! LOL!
I going to get the popcorn and a drink and get ready for the main feature!! THANK YOU GUYS for being so receptive....you all have been a Blessing to work with!!! Glad that everything is up to your approval! Labor of love!!!
can someone refer to me or answer the purpose of the holes on the shell for the drum he's playing? I remember seeing something like that from old school phantom regiment drums in the 80's. do they change the sound or something or is it an aesthetic thing?
Dude, u need to take ur vids off youtube they're making me look bad lol!!! That was a good solo man do u want to get into the Drum Corp??Blue Devils???!!! Keep it up! (and I was kidding about taking off ur vids lol!)
hows come i never see other bands using the hv snare in their drumline??
