Actually redstone dust has a very practical use in the case of doors. You see how when you enter a room you always have to turn around and close the door? well with a pressure plate about 2 blocks away from the door after entering, it will close the door for you and will free up time, thus making it practical.

I have this OCD thing of having wooden pressure plates on my doors. I just think it's handy. The only downside of this I discovered the other day when I died, respawned in my house and before I got a chance to move a creeper activated my plate and entered my house. You do the math.

Practical use for redstone: power a pressure plate that opens your door when you step on it but closes immediately once you're off it. This would be good for exiting your home. If you set the entrance so it is monster-proof, you could put one on both sides and not have to mess with right-clicking.

It turns out that TNT and dynamite are frequently confused. TNT is a largely carbon and nitrogen explosive, and dynamite is made using nitroglycerine and something like sand or sawduxt. But gunpowder is not used in iether explosive. It's wierd.
