I lived in Jersey City, which is right next to Newark. Three of our cars were stolen in Jersey City and all were found in Newark. And by the way, all contained boxes of Kentucky and Popeyes fried chicken on the back seat when cops found the cars.

I live in Caldwell NJ and I've been to Newark dozens of times. Newark has an ugly side, but it also has an appealing side. I am a big fan of Conan, but he doesn't know who he's messing with talking to Mayor Booker like that. This is a mayor who chased down a gang member, sat him down in a room to talk with him about his crimes. He's trying to turn this great city around and there's no way he's putting up with people talking bad about his city while he's putting forth all this effort to save it.

I went to school in Newark for four years. It was well known that you do NOT go off-campus after dark for any reason! Nothing to do. No theaters, shopping, nightlife. In New York City you have the Upper West Side but you also have Harlem. Newark is just a big Harlem. Stay away if you want to live.

Honestly...everyone in newark nj are people who cant afford to live in nyc anymore....some might consider that the better part. The gritty part...or ghetto depending on how you look at things. Newark is already light years different from when I was a kid...the skyline is enormous. NYCs ghetto is an endangered species. I wouldnt want to live that way either but I also think its kinda sad.

I love that a good number of people from Newark that are coming to its defense are displaying exactly why it is a hell hole. They have butchered the English language. They have made threatening remarks and they've made racist remarks. but I am from New Jersey, and I can appreciate the beauty of some parts of Newark.
Never once did I say the city is all good, but it has its parts that are lovely.

Studies have found that the african american people are more likely to go to jail for a crime than ANY other race due to the high level of gangs in a area. It isn't being racist, when the facts are there saying it. Its the same thing when it comes to rural areas and people that live are more likely to become problem drinkers and get DUIs. It is your surroundings that influence you on the way you are. I am not saying just blacks are committing crimes, I am just saying what studies have shown.

As a former Newark resident who moved the fuck out for precisely these reasons, I find this hilarious. However, Penn Station, Rutgers, and various other commodities are in Newark, so we cannot dismiss it entirely. The downtown business district is really looking nicer everyday.

I live in Caldwell NJ and I've been to Newark dozens of times. Newark has an ugly side, but it also has an appealing side. I am a big fan of Conan, but he doesn't know who he's messing with talking to Mayor Booker like that. This is a mayor who chased down a gang member, sat him down in a room to talk with him about his crimes. He's trying to turn this great city around and there's no way he's putting up with people talking bad about his city while he's putting forth all this effort to save it.

Except for (a part of) Newark Airport and the (just built) Prudential Center, the entire city of Newark is a gang infested, murderous, criminal, ugly, run-down city. I would rather be on the Gaza strip on a bright sunny war day.

I went to school in Newark for four years. It was well known that you do NOT go off-campus after dark for any reason! Nothing to do. No theaters, shopping, nightlife. Everywhere you walk downtown, boarded up buildings, bums everywhere, graffiti. Take the commuter train through the downtown and it's urban blight everywhere. In New York City you have the Upper West Side but you also have Harlem. Newark is just a big Harlem. Stay away if you want to live.

You don't have to live there to find out where certain crimes are committed, I can do that by finding a police scanner on the internet for your area....trust me, you can find anything on the internet too. Kingslice: when did you go to school in Newark? Now there are concerts at NJPAC and PRU center. Devils Hockey & college basketball at PRU ctr. At least 25 bars and restaurants & every month a new one opens. Baseball at Bears stadium. A world class museum. NJ historical society. Events at Symphony Hall. Several nightclubs including QXT. If you stay on campus you miss a lot.
